Information Technology

Definition of Information Technology (IT)

In early days, the term of Information Technology (IT) used to describes

any technology that helps to produce, manipulate, store, communicate,

and/or disseminate information.

In the 1960s and 1970s, the term information technology (IT) was used by

those who worked in places like banks and hospitals to describe the

processes they used to store information.

Today, Information Technology (IT) defined as the use of computers,

networking, software programming, and other equipment and

processes to store, process, retrieve, transmit, and protect information.

Information Society

Definition of Information Society

The concept of the Information society refers to the fact that it is

now very easy to link computers together and access information

stored on other computers.

The Internet is a good example. By connecting to the Internet you

gain access to millions of other computers that are connected around

the world.

Buying or selling goods(e-commerce). The phrase e-commerce is word that relates to buying or selling via the Internet. you can purchase directly via a Website by selecting the that you require and entering your credit card details. e.g. amazon website

e-Government is defined as the employment of the Internet for delivering government information and services to the citizens. e.g. opening a file at hospitals.

Common uses for the computer at work

1. Computer Based Training (CBT)

Computer Based Training (CBT) offers a low cost solution to training needs where you need to train a large amount of people on a single subject. These programs are normally supplied on CD-ROM and combine text, graphics and sound.

2. Automated Production Systems Many car factories are almost completely automated and the cars are

assembled by computer-controlled robots.

This automation is becoming increasingly common throughout industry.

3. Design Systems Many products are designed using CAD (Computer Aided Design) programs to produce exact specifications and detailed drawings on the computer before producing models of new products.

4. Accounts / Payroll In most large organizations the accounts are maintained by a computerized system. Due to the repetitive nature of accounts a computer system is ideally suited to this task and accuracy is guaranteed.

5. Stock Control Stock control is ideal for automation and in many companies it is now completely computerized. The stock control system keeps track of the number of items in stock and can automatically order replacement items when required.

The concept of education is largely affected with the enormous

advancement in the technology of information and communication.

The lessons have become electronically available.

They explain the subject in attractive way that can be repeated by the student.

Electronic learning (e-learning) has become a mean of education.

Electronic learning is a term describing the education by the computer,

to give the learner a opportunity to learn at all times and nearly everywhere.

The modern mechanisms of communication such as networks, multimedia ,

electronic libraries as well as the Internet are all used during the academic

term.

Aims of E-learning: • Covering the lack of qualified in the staff of teaching. • Giving the training more flexibility.• Achieving fairness in the training opportunity. • making education last.• Making the training cost effective.

Understand what elements and practices can help create

a good working environment.

• Frequent breaks away from the computer• Provision of adequate lighting and ventilation.• Appropriate positioning of screens, chairs and

keyboards (ergonomic).
