Thank you The week after our landscaping day, Guy Borel-Saladin (Madelaine’s dad, Gr 0) arrived at the

school with a team of workers who performed a major ‘make-over’ in the area around the Grade 0 and R classes. Thank you Guy, this hard work made an enormous difference to the area.

Mr Helmut Geiger (grandfather to the Goetze children) very kindly donated a water pump for our new irrigation system. Thank you Mr Geiger and your company, Elsumo Irrigation, for this most generous donation.

Possible debenture scheme

Following the promises made at our general PTA, we have now undertaken two of the three projects we have set out to do this year. You will have noticed that the playground overhaul with artificial grass and a new jungle gym is now complete. Thanks to the hard work of the landscaping committee and the parents and children at our work party, we have almost finished the first phase of our landscaping project which includes an irrigation system. The third and final project for the year will be construction of a swimming pool which will start in August. Whilst we have been able to secure an overdraft facility with our bank which will allow us to build the swimming pool, it would be preferable to rather look at alternate ways to finance the pool at a

better rate of interest. It is for this reason that we are considering launching a debenture scheme, starting in October or November of this year. How will it work? We are asking parents to loan money to the school in denominations of R10 000. The school will use this money on capital improvement projects (starting with the swimming pool) The school will repay the loan to you over as many years as you have a child at the school, but no longer than five years. The school will further pay interest of 2% below prime on an annual basis. Prime in South Africa is currently 8.5% per annum so we would pay a 6.5% per annum. If the prime rate goes up or down, we will adjust interest rates accordingly. The school will benefit by getting a more favourable interest rate than that offered by the banks and, at the same time, parents get a better rate of return than they would with a savings or deposit account with the bank. The school will make available copies of our recent audited financial statements to show that we are able to repay the debenture loan as stipulated in the agreement we will sign. At this stage we are just looking to see how many parents would consider supporting this venture. If you think that you may be interested, please email the office or contact Heather on 021 8643369.

Swimming pool construction By the end of next week, construction will start on our swimming pool. We will put up ‘danger tape’ once the ‘excavation phase’ is finished. During the excavation phase, this is not possible due to the heavy machinery moving in and out. We will ensure that children are kept away from the area during school time, if parents could please do the same before and after school.

The grass is most definitely greener on this side!

Thank you for all the knitted squares for blankets. We already have 14 bright, warm blankets ready to be distributed. Any more squares can be taken to Samantha in the Junior Playgroup.

Please note the following regarding the dates for this term:

1. There will be no communication sheets going out today due to the PTA last week. 2. Soccer matches – you will see that a number of soccer matches have been organised for the junior

team (grade 1 – 3). In order for all of our children to get a chance to play, we like to try and rotate players for matches. Having consulted the schools we are due to play, with the exception of Beaumont Primary, they all only have an ‘A’ team and play their strongest team (of Grade 3 learners) for each match. In order to maintain a fair, ‘strength v/s strength’ competition, we will follow suit. For this reason, some of the younger players may only get to play two matches this term (Beaumont and inter-house). We are on the look-out for teams of Grade 1 and 2 learners to play against but it seems that most schools prefer only playing matches with the older children because the Grade 1’s in particular are still ‘learning the game’.

Early mornings: Wednesdays On Wednesdays, the hall is not available for the ‘early morning’ class of children who arrive from 07h20 as it used for music lessons. Up until now, children have just played outside, but the weather is not conducive to this at present. Therefore, until our music centre is completed, the early morning class on Wednesdays will be accommodated in the aftercare classroom.

Last week, the theme for the week in Grade 2 was ‘Soil and items made from soil’. Using her own initiative during aftercare, Kayleigh Stubbs made ducks out of clay which she found on the school grounds.

We wish all of our Muslim families well over the fasting period during the month of Ramadan. Thank you for your continued support. Mike Aubin and the WPS team
