What is ICon Arts?

ICon Arts si both a summer school and a festival of contemporary arts.

Performance, composition, theatre, jazz, photography, vocals – this learning experience bring together students and well renowned artists from all over the world.

When?

The 16th edition will take place from 22th July - 12th August (3 weeks) in southern Transylvania, Romania.

Each week will be dedicated to 2 -3 different classes.

The Composer in Residence Program is scheduled from 25th

July until 1st August.

Who?

• John L. Loeb Associate Professor for the Humanities at the Harvard University (2000 – 2007);

• Music Composition Professor at the Boston University (2007 – present);• Founding director of the Boston University Center for New Music (2012)

Who?ICon Arts TRIO

DUO CELLO JAYA• Founded in 2012 by internationally

awarded cellists Ella Bokor and MirceaMarian;

• Aims at promoting new repertoire ormusic rarely performed in concerthalls

FERNANDO MIHALACHE

• Composer, accordion, piano and pan flute performer;

• Founder of the first Accordion Class at the National University of Music in Bucharest (2014);

• Most highly- rated Romanian accordion performer of new music

Main stage: Sibiu

A few facts about the city of Sibiu:• It was build by Saxon

(German) settlers in 1191• It was declared European

Cultural Capital in 2007 together with Luxemburg

• It’s city center still preserves it’s medieval look, with cobble stone streets, towers and squares that were used as markets

Surroundings: Biertan

The village of Biertan is one of the first settlements of the Saxons, dating back to 1281.

Since 1993, it’s on the UNESCO heritage list with its magnificent fortified church.

Biertan will be one of the ICon Arts headquarters and residencies. Also one of the places to host a concert/event.

Surroundings: Richiș

The village of Richiș was well known in the past for its vineyards and wine, which was desired even at the court of the Habsburg Empire, in Vienna.

Nowadays, Richiș is the village with the highest number of nationalities living together from Romania.

Richiș will be one of the ICon Arts headquarters and residencies. Also one of the places to host a concert/event.

Surroundings: Alma Vii

Mentioned for the first time in 1289, Alma Vii is one of those fairytale like villages at the end of the civilization.

Surroundings: Mălâncrav

Today, Mălâncrav is the village with the biggest Saxon population.

The fortfied luteran church, with its Gothic nave and mural paintings is one of the main attraction points in the region. The other one is the Apafi Manor, which belonged to one of the richest noble families in Transilvania.

Mălâncrav will be one of the IConArts headquarters and residencies. Also one of the places to host a concert/event.

Proposed schedule & daily activities

8.00 – 9.00 – breakfast

9.30 – 13.00 – morning classes

13.00 – 14.00 – lunch break

14.00 – 15.00 – free time

15.00 – 17.00 – afternoon classes

17.00 – 18.30 – village tour/ getting to know the local crafts/free time

19.00 – 21.00 - concert & dinner ( it can be in the local village or in a nearby village/city)

Masterclass/rehersal spaces

Accomodation

The accommodation of both students and professors will be in villages, in local guesthouses, in rooms of 2 – 3 or more beds, such as below.

Meals

All the meals –breakfast, lunch, dinner - will be taken at the local guesthouse or at the local brunch (part of the Festival’s events).

The food will be locally grown – sometimes from the backyard orchards/garden – and the dishes will be traditional, Romanian or Saxon.

Participation packages

The ICon Arts packages for chamber music, jazz, contemporary dance, performance, drama, vocal masterclasses and composition residency have a fee of 600 Euro/student (or 300 Euro/student for two selected Irish composers), which includes:

Accommodation for 7 days

3 meals a day

Airport transfer (from Sibiu International Airport)

Local transportation (to the concerts from the ICon Arts Festival)

Tuition fees

Performance-related costs (for composer in residence program)

Documentary video recording of the performance (for composer in residence program)

The deadline for registrations is May 15th 2018 (composer in residence)/ June 15th

2018 (remainig sections), or until all available spots are taken.

If registration is made till 1st April 2018, there is a 10% discount.
