A world of work which is safe, healthy and sustainable
Developing a competency framework
Why create one?
> The profession needs to continue to develop to
maintain its relevance.
> IOSH has a responsibility to underpin professional
recognition for its members.
> Using a common framework that business
understands, OSH professionals can more easily
deliver ‘beyond compliance’.
> Regulation changing: less detail on what ‘good looks
like’
A Competency Framework – for the profession
What is it?
> A tool providing self assessment for individuals.
> A professional pathway for those seeking a career in OSH
> A support for continuous professional development.
> A way for OSH professionals to communicate the value of
OSH to organisations
The ‘Business’ Perspective
Why create a framework?
> It will enable the health and safety professional to look at
the development areas within their organisation.
> Global businesses to SMEs are asking for a different
approach.
> The ability to manage OSH resilience in the supply
chain.
> A blueprint for delivering OSH resilience in the
workforce.
> Transferability.

Making it work:
What’s next?
> Framework will help you to develop sector-specific
skills and competencies
> Resources and Knowledge Library (guidance,
training, articles, events…)
> Available at the end of 2016 to members
> 2017 extensive business engagement
A successful framework
> Larger employers accept and commit to the IOSH framework
and their OSH professionals
> SMEs can use the framework to better understand their OSH
needs and the professional support they require.
> People choosing the profession can use the tool to identify their
needs and plan their safety and health development.
> Members can use the tool to help them with CPD.
> The profession is better recognised, better understood and more
valued
A successful framework
“The new global competency framework will enable each
member to now actively understand their own personal
development areas, which are much wider than simply
being a technical health and safety professional.
It will also enable OSH professionals to look at the
development areas within their organisation, which is very
exciting.”
Karl Simons, Head of Safety, Health & Wellbeing at Thames Water Utilities Ltd
