LEACHATE TREATMENT TECHNOLOGY

As a company specialized in filtration, separation and purification of fluids, Klarwin offers a large range of technologies: microfiltration (MF) or ultrafiltration (UF) systems with hollow fiber modules; reverse osmosis with Spiral-Wound (SW) membranes; reverse osmosis systems with Disc Tube modules.

What are the main challenges in the leachate treatment process?

Conventional urban wastewater treatment plants don’t remove sufficiently COD, ammonia, nitrogen, salts and heavy metals.

Why Pall’s Disc TubeTM Reverse Osmosis (DTRO) module has become the preferred leachate treatment?

The DTRO module system is designed to ensure molecular and ionic separation of the whole spectrum of pollutants in all aqueous environments: from suspended matter to the smallest ions, including colloids, bacteria, viruses and organic matter.

For high polluted waste water, DTRO modules are the perfect fit, because they are robust, handling differential pressures up to 16 bar, and less sensitive to soiling and rupture than SW membranes.

Why Klarwin®?

Klarwin®’s technology, in exclusive regional collaboration with Grimm & Wulff Anlagen und Systembau GmbH, produces the best quality of treated water (permeate), which can be discharged back into the environment, used for irrigation or as process water:

more than 2,000 filtration systems delivered worldwide (directly or through partners).

over 30 years of experience in water treatment/purification and waste management projects, including in ISPA, EU, EBRD and World Bank funded projects.

the factory in Hamburg, Germany, has a portfolio of over 2000 filtration and reverse osmosis systems for various applica-tions such as: water desalination, industrial and military applica-tions and, mostly, landfills leachate treatment.

the specialists in Hamburg were the first worldwide to develop and manufacture reverse osmosis technology in leachate treatment, and therefore, have the longest experience in the field.

the authors of these technologies have important publications in this field and, also, other patents for related technologies.

Pall DTRO is the most advanced and efficient method for treating landfill leachate

DESIGN

Unique open channel configuration; Hydraulic discs with pins on both sides, that create a spacing between them and the cushion; Short permeate route to the tie rod anchor; Evenly distributed and self-cleaning hydraulic circuit; High differential pressure across the modules, that generates turbulent flow.

FEATURES

Easy and fast start-ups and shut-downs; No chemical pre-treatment needed; Less sensitive against permeate side pressure pushes; High load capacity; Reduced risks of clogging, crystallization or concentration polarization; Low operating costs: about 2-5 € / m3.

DURABILITY

Easy Maintenance - modules can be opened and tested, a single cushion can be replaced; Less susceptible to scaling and fouling due to high flow veloc-ities; Life of the equipment is at least 20 years. Life of the membranes is approx. 10 years.

SAFETY FIRST

Modules are certified and approved by TUV Technischer Ueberwachuns-Verein Nord e.V.

LEACHATE TREATMENT DESIGN

LANDFILL LEACHATE TREATMENT PLANT (LLTP)

The leachate treatment system is designed in one or more filtration steps, that can be added to obtain the desired result depending on the quality and the variable quantity of the leachate available. Leachate and permeate quality is constantly controlled by measuring conductivity, pH, pressure and temperature. Implementing these values into the control system leads to great reliability in operation of the leachate treatment plant.

Characteristics: Small footprint; “Plug & Play” installation with a short start-up period; Modular expandable design with one or multiple stages; Mobile containerized units or in situ installation options; Short or long-term rental opportunities.

Leachate stage (RO1) treats leachate from the landfill and is protected by a pre-filtration step using coarse filters, sand filters, cartridges or bag filters. The system is fully automated, and is designed integrally, with high-pressure pumps, modules, control valves, instrumentation and tank system.

Operating pressure: up to 160 bar; Recovery rate: 70-92%; Flow capacity: 0.4 - 25 m3 / h per line.

The tank system contains:

Sulfuric acid to adjust the pH of the leachate and avoid crystallization of the membranes due to inorganic deposits; Cleaner A (alkaline) to avoid organic sedimentation and fouling; Cleaner C (acid) for anti-oxidation, and to avoid calcium and iron fouling; Antiscalant (Polymers that precipitate Barium, Silica and Iron) to protect membranes; Sodium hydroxide for pH control of the permeate (alternative for the stripper).

The special cleaning agents, produced by Grimm & Wulff, are the most effective because they are specially created to clean the membranes well enough and, at the same time, not affect their performance and lifetime.

Combined with up-to-date technology, it guarantees maximum process stability and reduces membrane degradation to ensure system longevity.

Klarwin® collaborates with reliable laboratories to conduct chemical analysis of the permeate to check the parameters in the discharge specifications and of the leachate to assess the performance of the system as a function of seasonal variation.

LABORATORY ANALYSIS

Permeate stage (RO2) is fed with the permeate from the first stage. This optional step helps to meet the discharge requirements, reducing dissolved components with approx. 80 -90%, in the case that the water quality treated in the first stage of RO requires additional treatment. The permeate is then loaded into a storage tank.

LEACHATE TREATMENT DESIGN

Concentrated stage (RO6) is fed with the concentrate resulting from the previous steps, reducing waste volume.

The stripper is a specially designed system used to adjust the natural pH of the permeate by removing dissolved gases.

The ion exchanger uses ion exchange resins selected according to the permeate chemistry, that improves permeate quality up to discharge requirements. Because of the RO stage downstream, the operating costs and frequency of resin regeneration are dramatically reduced.

Evaporators reduce the water content of the concentrate to reduce waste management costs.

LANDFILL GAS AND BIOGAS MANAGEMENT

Klarwin®, in collaboration with HOFSTETTER GASTECHNIK AG, offers the most efficient solution for handling of combustible gases, wherever they need to be collected, transported or removed to reduce the greenhouse effect. We are your partner for the controlled combustion of landfill gases, biogas, mining gas or industrial gases at high temperatures.

CH4 Generated continuously in the waste Naturally emitted into the atmosphere creating Greenhouse effect Is 21 times more harmful to the environment than CO2 It is a fire hazard Has bad odours

The complete solution package for extraction, treatment and monitoring of gases with concentrations of 15-60% methane, includes the entire range of services from design, construction and service.

The gas is collected through a network of pipes and flared or used to produce power.

The additional gas analysis system continuously monitors the composition of the gas and stops the plant before an explosive mixture is formed in the system.

The result is maximizing equipment efficiency and a lifetime above average for gas treatment systems.

The experience of our technological partner and the on-going regional projects recommend us:

HOFSTETTER GASTECHNIK AG, introduced the world's first gas extraction and combustion in flare burners in the 1970s.

The equipment is produced in Switzerland.

More than 2,000 gas systems delivered worldwide (directly or through partners).

Combustion and treatment systems are adapted to any type of gas (landfill gas, biogas, industrial gas).

The technology respects the laws and norms of gas extraction and burning; HOFSTETTER GASTECHNIK AG, is the only producer of flares in the world that ensures near-complete burnout of landfill gas with low caloric value, meaning methane concentration of approx. 15-30%, according to the environmental legislation.

LANDFILL GAS AND BIOGAS MANAGEMENT

The design of high temperature flares is based on the specific requirements of the project and the composition of the gas, containing:

Gas collection piping system;

Pump station for gas processing;

EEx blower for the extraction of the gas from the landfill;

Flare for low emission combustion of landfill gas;

Burner control systems approved by DVGW to provide a defined combustion process;

Components that come in contact with gases free of rust and resistant to pressures up to 6 bars;
