Open BAR A BAR competition was first held in the very early years after the war but the early history is unclear. Jim Turner won the “club BAR” in 1954 but under different rules. The current competition, from 1973, is contested on the same lines as the national competition, ie the fastest average speed over a series of set distances. For the Open BAR the distances are 10, 25 50 and 100 miles. The trophy, a large (420 x 310 mm) hardwood shield with a brass centre, inscribed ‘DMRC BEST ALL ROUNDER’, is shown in the photo.

Central District BAR Decided on fastest average speed over the same distances as the Open BAR but limited to courses within the Central District of the RTTC (CTT) so as not to disadvantage those riders unable to travel around the country in search of fast courses. The competition was instigated in 1984 and a trophy was donated by club member Ted Kerry (inscribed E. D. Kerry Financial Services). The cup is 350 mm high, including the base. The competition was stopped in 2004 and the trophy re-assigned to the ‘Club BAR’ competition which was introduced that year.

Club BAR Competition introduced in 2004. The result is decided over four events, including at least one from each of the following: 10 miles or less, over 10 and up to 25 miles, over 25 miles. The score for each event is determined as (event winner’s time)/(DMRC rider’s time)x100 %. The four results are averaged to get the final % figure. Cup - See CD BAR above.

Ladies BAR Rules as for the Junior BAR but restricted to lady riders. The history of the competition prior to 1988 is not clear. It is not known when the competition was first contested. The trophy presented to the winner is the Bucko Bowl. This trophy was originally presented to the club in 1979 in memory of Joe (‘Bucko’) Buxton for the first lady finisher in the Dovedale Dash. After the Mercury stopped organising the Dovedale Dash in 1987 the trophies were re-assigned and the Bucko Bowl became the trophy for the Ladies BAR. The bowl is 320 mm across and 305 mm high on its base.

Ray Booty Challenge Trophy Magnificent silver trophy awarded to Ray Booty by the Bath Road Club in 1956 on his third consecutive victory in the club’s 100 mile time trial (one of the most famous TT events of the time). It was also on this occasion that Ray recorded the first ever sub 4 hour ride for a 100 mile ‘out and back’ time trial and is therefore a part of cycle time trialling history. On his death, Ray wanted the trophy to go to the Derby Mercury and to be awarded each year (details were left up to the DMRC). It was decided to hold a special one-off event each year for the trophy. It was first awarded in 2015.

  • Evening Time Trial Series The evening time trial series has been a part of the club programme of events almost from the very beginning although the number and mix of events has varied over the years. Since 1994, the winner of the senior scratch competition has received the “John Wright Memorial Cup”, donated by Noreen Wright for the Juvenile Criterium Competition in 1990 in memory of her husband John (Jack) who was a member since the 1940s. When that competition ceased in 1994 the trophy was re-assigned to the TT Series. There was no trophy for this competition before that. The cup is 220 mm high, 285 mm on base.

The trophy for the Handicap competition is “The Joe Buxton Memorial Trophy”, donated by the family to the club on his death in 1979. The trophy is hallmarked and is 250 mm high, 320 mm with base. The shield shown is inscribed ‘Schoolboy Evening Time Trial Trophy’ and carries the names of winners from 1981 to 1989, 1997, 1999, 2003, 2004, 2011 and 2012. Winners from 1990, 1991, 2009 and 2010 are not on the shield. There are no trophies for the Lady, Junior or U14 categories.

  • Inter-Club 25 Mile Time Trial Competition The competition is over 25 miles and is contested by four local clubs. The clubs taking part have changed over the years but the Derby Mercury RC and the South Pennine RC have always been involved. The competition is between five man teams and is decided by the total actual time for the fastest five riders from each club. Bill Gray donated two trophies in 1956, one for the team (left photo) and one for the individual winner (centre photo). The team trophy (left) is hallmarked and is 205 mm high, 305 mm on its base. This trophy went missing following the Feb.2016 presentation. The individual winner trophy fell into disrepair and was replaced in 2000 with the cup shown on the right. This has winners engraved on it from 2000 and is inscribed ‘Bill Gray 25 Mile Team Trophy Individual Fastest 1956’. Overall height 285 mm. Silver plate. The old individual fastest trophy (centre) was later repaired and mounted on a new base and is awarded to the Vets Road Race champion (from 2011).
