This week has been Anti-bullying week. The theme this year has been
‘All different, All equal, All welcome’. It started off with a wonderful
assembly organised by Mrs Clarke, supported by Miss Beadle and Miss
O’Sullivan. Throughout the week the children have completed many
activities in PSHEE lessons and throughout the curriculum. Year 3 have
made fantastic quote posters using #choosekind and Year 2 made mixed
up characters to show we are all unique.
Year 1 listened to the story of the day, ‘The
Crayons Quilt’ and Reception produced
wonderful videos after watching a clip of
children talking about their differences.
Please click here to view.
Today is Children in Need and the children
have all dressed in spots and home clothes. They have all completed a
sponsored walk raising money for this wonderful charity. A total will be
published in next week’s newsletter – thanks for your support.
On Saturday 18th (tomorrow), Friends of St Olave’s will be holding a
Christmas Shopping Fair. This will take place between 11am – 1pm in
the Shepherds Hall. Entrance to the fair is free and there will be a wide
range of Christmas gifts and treats on sale along with home baked cakes,
tea and coffee and an exciting raffle. St Olave’s School charity this year
is www.snappyyork.co.uk and proceeds of the Christmas Shopping Fair
will go towards this charity.
My thanks to the parents who attended our presentation ‘learning for
the future – Thematic Curriculum at Clifton’. It was wonderful to see
so many parents at the event and I have really appreciated the positive
feedback you have provided. The aim of the presentation was to
provide an insight into how and why we have created our curriculum
and the research supporting the curriculum design and approaches
demonstrating the importance we place on the school values and our
learning superhero’s (habits). My sincere thanks to Mrs Clarke for
preparing the presentation and to Chef Sarah for providing the
refreshments. We hope to look at other opportunities to provide an
insight to our teaching methods in the future. Please let Mrs Clarke or
myself know of any ideas for future information evenings.
I hope you all have a wonderful weekend.
Best wishes
This week in 1T we have been continuing our work on light and dark. The children have enjoyed putting on their own bird of prey shows after our visit from the Bird of Prey centre last week. They have also begun to learn about some other nocturnal animals and writing about them. We have been making our owls choosing our own design
and writing which materials we need to complete our task. In maths we have been continuing to learn about subtraction learning how to extract the information we need from a word problem, make subtraction triangles and tackling tricky missing numbers. Our sewing table has been a big hit this week and the children have been
demonstrating what good fine motor skills they have. In between we have managed to fit in a 2 mile sponsored run/walk for Children in Need. Well done 1T have a well- deserved rest this weekend!
LOST PROPERTY Beth
Searby’s swim hat and
Elliott Lewis’ PE bag—
please look for them!
It was another busy week at Playgroup, we made owls which looked outstanding and cute, I really love all the ones the mummies did! Also we had another yummy cake as it was Oliver's Birthday. For the next two weeks as Mrs Hayden is busy with the Christmas Performance rehearsals, we will play with the parachute instead, which I am sure will be lots of fun. Next week there is an assembly on in the Rayson Room till 9am so after the assembly we can set up Playgroup together. See you all next week! Mrs Deri-Clarke
An Elf Recipe!
On Monday morning ‘Pickle’ the Elf had left an Elf Breakfast ready and waiting for us! We had never seen an Elf Breakfast before so were very curious to learn what it might be!
Pickle left 5 recipe cards each describing a recipe for compassion, patience, friendship, happiness and kindness. We followed the recipe cards making delicious, edible breakfasts to start our day. Over breakfast we chatted about why each recipe was a good breakfast and reasons why understanding feelings and emotions
are important. The children were filled with goodness and ready to start each school day with a great attitude! Thanks to Pickle we were able to learn that everyone is different, all equal and all welcome, no matter what.

The children at Clifton are busy showing off their creative side in their dance lessons. From colours, alphabet actions, animal movements, fireworks and even some potions and wizardry, they have let their imaginations flow!
This week in 2H we have been
learning about Viking poetry! We
discovered that the Vikings invented
a way of writing poetry called
Kennings, or Drapas, which is a little
bit like writing a riddle. We read lots
of examples, trying to guess what
was being described. We decided to
write our own Kennings about
Nosepicker, Sigurd’s very special sword. We set about some very challenging team work, using
the technique of noun then verb and writing one line each in our groups. We then decided on
the order that the lines should be in, without making sure that ours was at the top! Our
finished poems show that we write rather violent and very descriptive poems…! We are working
on writing up our finished poems and illustrating them carefully-
come and see our finished work in Year 2!
1J have been Rita Resilient
learners this week – they have shown curiosity and enthusiasm when learning all about the different planets as part of our topic and assembly preparation. Challenge the children to tell you an interesting fact about one of the planets. We have been making nocturnal animal masks using different materials and followed this
up with research about our chosen nocturnal animal using a range of texts and websites.
In Maths we have been using number lines and hundred squares to solve subtraction problems and we are continuing to manipulate the numbers within the problems to see what other number sentences we can create.
We completed our sponsored walk for Children in Need which was a 2 mile walk/ run by the river. The children worked really hard and even out ran some of
the grown-ups! Well done 1J, a great effort.
Theo brought his Viking ship that he has
made with all of the Battersby family into
school this week! He enjoyed telling us all
about how it was made and had to have
help holding it up as it is so large!
This week Year 3
have been
completing their
script writing,
ready to start
filming! At Forest
School we
rehearsed our
scenes and gave
feedback on each
other’s performances to
help improve our final
pieces. As part of anti-bulling week some of
the children have been using their videoing
skills to record themselves discussing why we
are all unique! The children came with some
beautiful ideas about how we are all different and all
equal. In Maths we are continuing on our magical
measuring journey. We have been hunting around
school for different measurements and looking at how we can measure accurately.
We have been measuring brooms, wands and potion
bottles! Finally a big well done
to all of 3M for their fantastic
performance on Wednesday!
Your costumes were amazing
and you filled the whole room
with laughter while
demonstrating your great acting.
Well done, you made us very
proud!
In Art Club this week, we have been making scraper boards of Viking
treasures. However, we always start with some art history and this week
Mrs Hall showed us a painting called The Ambassadors, by Hans Holbein,
painted in 1533, when Elizabeth 1 was Queen of England. We learnt about
how well the picture was painted, looking at the fur and the silk, as well
as the detail on the cloth and the curtain. We looked at the painting from
the side, so that we could see the skull, painted cleverly so that we are
reminded that no one lives forever. Then we discussed whether or not it
was right that the people who cleaned the painting a few years ago should
have corrected the mistake in the cloth that Holbein had made. We de-
cided that they shouldn’t have done that. Seb Gemmell spoke really well
about why we should leave things as the artist did them, even though
those artists are not alive any more, apart from cleaning them. Mrs Clarke
and Mrs Hall were really impressed with art club’s thinking!
‘All Different, All Equal, All Welcome’
Anti-Bullying Week
We began with a whole school assembly to introduce the theme of
the week.
Year 3 demonstrated how they are all different and what a special
and wonderful thing it is to be unique. We sang ‘I’m Ok’ and
then RS sang their favourite song ‘True Colours’ to remind
us to always be ourselves and let our ‘true colours shine
through’. We finished our assembly by thinking about being a
school that welcomes everyone, so Miss Beadle and sign
language club taught us to say good morning, good afternoon,
good evening and good night using sign language. This reminded us that we can be
friendly and welcoming to everyone.
Throughout the week in PSHEE we used clips and extracts from the book (and soon
to be released film) of Wonder to explore difference and diversity and why we should
treat everyone equally and with kindness. We all liked this quote from the story:
“You can’t blend in when you were born to stand out”
Year 3 made some fantastic quote posters using the #choosekind and Year 2 made mixed up characters
to show that we are all unique. Year 1 listened to the story of the ‘Day the Crayons Quit’ which helped
them to think about all being different, but all being important. They all made their crayon to represent
themselves which they added to the box which says:
“We are all a box of crayons, each one of us unique, but when we get together the picture is complete”.
After watching a clip of children talking about their differences each class made their own film to share
with the school. They are fantastic!
The children have all had a great time and really thought hard about diversity, equality and kindness. Well
done everyone!
Mrs Clarke
After our skating expeditions, this week RB have been investigating ice! We filled ice cube trays with water
using squeezy pipettes and were very excited the following day to discover cold, hard, slippery ice! The children
chose where to leave an ice cube – in a bowl on the radiator, desk, in the fridge or wrapped up in bubble wrap
and half an hour later we discovered which ice cubes had melted completely, a little, a lot or not at all! We were
shocked to find the ice cubes wrapped up in a bubble wrap blanket stayed cold and didn’t warm up and melt!
Where in the world could we find even more ice?!
This week in school we have been celebrating Anti-bullying Week, with a particular focus on celebrating being different, being equal and being welcoming to
all!
We have celebrated each others achievement’s and talked about what sets us apart from each other. Gender, looks and things we are good at were just a few of the things we came up with. However, we all appreciated the fact that without us having different talents, different ideas and different looks, not only would it be
difficult for Miss Murray to tell us apart, but life would also be
dull and rather boring! We discussed the importance of making mistakes and learning from our own experiences!
The week has been filled with activities involving us working collaboratively on challenges and practicing being the best version of ourselves– and a jolly good job we did of it too!
News from the Friends
The Friends of Clifton enhances the experience for all of our children through events and
resources for school, as well as serving to involve parents in the school community. Additionally, it
helps to raise money for the school charity. We invite everyone to get involved and help the
Friends to support our school.

A huge thank you for your incredibly generous donations for Children in Need. So far you have helped us to raise
a fantastic total of over £1,600.00. The children had a fabulous day and all enjoyed taking part in the sponsored
walk/run for Children in Need. In assembly Mrs Clarke showed us a short clip of two little girls in Leeds who,
through Children in Need, had been able to take part in the transplant games. A wonderful example of our school
value of compassion in action. Any outstanding donations can be bought to the school office.
