Comparing the KarolinskaExhaustion Disorder Scale (KEDS), summated scores and their relation
to sick leave.

Background• Exhaustion disorder, ED might cause long term disability.
• The KEDS is a 9 item self‐rating scale to measure ED, and has recently been validated (2012, Poster at this conference)
• The KEDS is useful in the assessment of symptoms of exhaustion disorder in clinical settings.
• In order to further validate the KEDS, we have examined whether there is a correlation between sick leave and the summated score of KEDS.

Methods
• The KEDS was filled in by ED patients (n=181) just terminating treatment at the DanderydHospital’s Stress Rehabilitation Clinic.
• The summated scores were correlated with degree of sick leave at that moment.
Statistical analyses
• The questionnaires are entered and saved in Epidata (www.epidata.dk)
• Analysis were made using the statistical software R (www.r‐project.org)

Results
• For patients that were treated at the clinic during the period of 2006 to febr 2010 there was a moderate, but statistically highly significant poscorrelation between KEDS score and extent of sick leave.
• Summated scores on the KEDS fell below the empirically observed cut off of 19 points, between ED patients and healthy controls, when sick leave was 0% or 25%, and above the cut off with sick leave 50‐100%.
Results
• When splitting the data into two groups– Patients during the period 2006 to July 2008*
• there was a weak, and not statistically significant correlation between KEDS score and extent of sick leave.
– Patients during the period July 2008 to Febr 2010• there was a strong, and statistically highly significant correlation between KEDS score and extent of sick leave.

Conclusions
• The KEDS may be useful in the assessment of symptoms of exhaustion disorder in clinical settings and can also indicate a need for sick leave, accompanied by other assessment methods.
• After July 2008 the correlation between summated scores in KEDS and extent of sick‐leave was even stronger, than before that period.
