Compare & Contrast: The Story of an Hour & The Yellow Wallpaper “The Story of an Hour” Similarities “The Yellow Wallpaper” Main character has heart problems Everyone knew that she had these heart problems and treated her gently Someone died There was irony within the story because the woman was excited about her new freedom and she died from the excitement. She was ill and was told her husband died. She was okay that he was dead. When she found out he was alive and died of too many emotions. Both of the women are “trapped.” Both women were in a society that oppressed them. They were both in their feelings. Women have marriage issues. Ironic Both husbands had their own roles with their wives. Both lived in an oppressed society so they both most likely wanted their husband to die. The Women was locked up and they wouldn't let her out. Main character Has anxiety and depression. No one thought that any of these problems were valid/actually existed The woman became crazy/depressed by the husband thinking he was helping by isolating her in a house with bars. The woman was ill. Husband takes her to a secluded place and keeps a very close eye on her. Her insanity takes over and her husband faints from shock.
