When medical special ists search for
s igns of disease…
Nikon supplies the solution.
Nikon is developing equipment for diagnosing diseases earlier while reducing patient burdens, contributing to quality of life in an era of increasing human longevity.
We are living in an era of increasing human longevity, and health expectancy is emerging as the key to enjoying a good quality of life.
One of Nikon’s answers is to provide “Ophthalmology Solutions” that diagnose diseases earlier, allowing for prompt treatment.
An ultra-wide field retinal imaging device developed by Nikon Group’s Optos Plc captures a digital image of the retinal area with the wide field of view of 200˚ simultaneously. Non-mydriatic diagnosis greatly reduces the burden on patients, and this supports diagnosis of retinal detachment, retinal break, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration. Nikon is also developing a diagnosis support system using artificial intelligence (AI) in the analysis of retina images, as a way to minimize the risk of vision loss from diabetic eye disease.
In addition, Nikon is constantly developing and supplying innovative microscopes via “Microscope Solutions”, while “Cell Solutions (Regenerative medicine/Drug discovery support)” employ technology for cell observation and analysis to contribute to the fields of regenerative medicine and drug discovery.
By utilizing optical technology, Nikon is contributing to the fields of medical and biological science fields, and helping to raise people’s quality of life.

Nikon is supporting reliable manufacturing by providing highly precise measurement and inspection.
A medium- or large-sized aircraft is constructed using about three million parts, each of which needs to be completely reliable. Careful quality inspection is an indispensable part of the aircraft manufacturing process.
Among all, the jet engine turbine blades play one of the most crucial roles. It is necessary to conduct strict 100% inspections of the blade shape and wall thickness, as well as detect structural defects.
However, turbine blades are made of high-density materials, such as single-crystal alloy, and are difficult to inspect precisely using conventional inspection systems.
That is where Nikon’s X-ray/CT Inspection System XT H 450, equipped with the world’s only high-power X-ray source of 450kV, comes into play.
The XT H 450 enables non-destructive inspection to check the quality of casted parts and welds. This means it can be used not just for inspecting aircraft turbine blades, but also for vehicle engine castings and turbochargers.
Nikon also offers a diverse lineup of measuring and inspection systems to meet various industrial needs, such as systems for non-contact large-volume inspection and CNC video measuring.

Nikon is contributing to scientific progress with custom-made products such as optical systems for satellites.
Astronomy has been called the world’s oldest science. Civilization developed through our ancestors looking up from darkness at the glittering night sky, weaving magnificent stories, determining the seasons, creating calendars and divining directions from the stars. Even today, our curiosity and spirit of inquiry about the universe are endless, and humanity continues to make exciting new discoveries.
Nikon designs and manufactures optical parts that require ultra-high precision for a diverse array of fields, including space and astronomy. Among them are the observation systems for the Subaru large-scale optical-infrared telescope (National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, Hawaii Observatory) and the optical system for the Venus Climate Orbiter AKATSUKI.

Technology Strategy Committee
The Technology Strategy Committee aims to actively
respond to a wider range of social issues and needs.
In order to formulate the Medium-Term Management
Plan, this committee has established three areas of long-
term growth in “Digital Manufacturing”, “Vision Systems/
Robotics” and “Healthcare” based on Nikon’s core
competence, and social and market trends.
In the future, Nikon will work on each business unit/
division from the technical aspect to ensure the effective
implementation of the Medium-Term Management Plan
across the Group. Flexibly adjusting to external changes,
Nikon will aim to achieve long-term growth.
Basic Technologies that Support Nikon
To strengthen Nikon’s existing businesses and create
new businesses, it is vital to continue basic R&D activities
based on a long-term perspective. With opto-electronics
and precision technologies as a foundation, Nikon is
conducting R&D in a wide range of technologies, such as
optics, precision measurement and manufacturing, image
processing, materials, and software and systems.
Initiatives to improve QCD (quality, cost, delivery)
Nikon’s manufacturing has developed internationally
and must deliver products that achieve “Nikon quality”
regardless of their production location worldwide.
Introducing and strengthening a common quality
management system and production technology, Nikon
realizes exactly the same quality worldwide which means
that the extremely high quality is maintained whichever
Nikon facility in the world produces them. Also, in order
to meet customers’ requirements accurately not only for
quality, but also regarding cost and delivery, Nikon is
advancing improvement activities from diverse perspectives
such as development, design, procurement, manufacturing
and quality.
• Reinforcing the quality management system
Nikon has established a Basic Quality Policy for the quality
management system, drawn up a Quality Control Directive
to effectively execute the policy, and implemented it across
the Nikon Group.
Also, in order to realize optimized manufacturing,
Nikon makes continual efforts to strengthen the quality
management system and prevent quality problems from
occurring, to absolutely ensure a totally consistent “Made
by Nikon” product quality worldwide.
• Promoting front-loading
Nikon mass produces digital cameras and interchangeable
lenses not only at factories in Japan, but also at our facilities
around the world. When manufacturing products at any
factory, teams are formed involving the production site
from the development stage, and opinions are exchanged
and discussed several times. By also employing computer
simulations, the development time can be shortened, any
issues are discovered at an early stage and appropriate
measures can be considered in order to successfully realize
product optimization.
Built a Platform Utilizing AI
Focusing on information processing technology including
AI, which has been developing rapidly in recent years, Nikon
Group established a platform structure and environment
that utilize AI efficiently and effectively. Now, based on
this platform, we are advancing R&D that combines AI with
Opto-electronics Technologies and Precision Technologies,
and accelerating development in order to deploy this for
business utilization.

As one of the research and development themes,
Nikon is advancing development of super-resolution
nonlinear fluorescence microscopy. Overlaying two-
color laser beams allowed the spatial resolution*1 to
be improved and thus realized super resolution that
breaks the diffraction limit*2. Recently, demands
for observing deep areas of thick samples such
as cultured cells have been increasing. Nonlinear
fluorescence microscopy is expected to be
available at a lower cost and more convenient than
conventional super-resolution microscopy, making
it an effective tool to meet these deep observation
needs. We are advancing the development with
perspectives of modularizing in the future, and
enhancing additional values of the existing confocal
laser microscope system.*1 The ability to distinguish two close points as separate points.*2 The theoretical limit of resolution defined by light diffraction phenomenon (the phenomenon whereby light waves move around and behind obstacles).
The Nikon way of manufacturing utilizes system
optimization from a Group-wide perspective as
well as consideration of each part of the process
from the product development and design stage.
Nikon concretely promotes activities to enhance
all aspects of productivity including procurement,
manufacturing and quality assurance.
As well as this, in order to accurately meet
customers’ needs which are increasingly diversifying,
and to contribute to prosperity, convenience and
assurance in everyday life for customers through our
products, Nikon is constantly evolving.

Manufacturing structure
Improving manufacturing technology for optical
components on a Group-wide basis as well as establishing
a manufacturing system with enhanced efficiency, Nikon
continuously strives to strengthen its overall manufacturing
system.
Nikon’s products consist of optical and stage units as well as
a diverse range of functional units. For optical units, which
are the core of Nikon products’ superiority, production
facilities, human resources and accumulated technologies
are now concentrated at Tochigi Nikon, while the
development and design departments that were previously
dedicated to each product have been consolidated within
the Optical Engineering Division. By promoting more
efficient manufacturing, Nikon is enhancing Group-wide
productivity. In addition, as an important Group-wide issue,
we are working to strengthen the manufacturing base
through digital manufacturing utilizing AI and IoT.28 29
