New editor realizes her vision ofCondé Nast Traveler

This week sees the arrival of the March issue of CondéNast Traveler magazine — which marks the full-scalevision of new Editor-in-Chief Pilar Guzmán, whoarrived at the publication six months ago.

Guzmán — who formerly headed up Martha StewartLiving and the now-shuttered Cookie magazines — hasgiven Traveler a bolder, more modern, far morefashionable new look; with linear text blocks andtighter feature stories sure to resonate with a youngerreadership more comfortable with blogs and Tumblrthan long-form journalism.

Graced by the ever-graceful Christy Turlington on thecover and featuring a thoroughly global mix of topicsand destinations, the new Traveler promises bothelegance and exploration. We spoke to Guzmán todiscover five key destinations where the new issue will

take us.

India

sightseeing. It was important for her to hit key sites, but also to narrow the focus in acountry so vast. I also love how she chose to have an immunization party for herco-travelers before departure.

Rio de Janeiro

Rio is obviously on our minds because ofthis summer’s World Cup and the 2016Olympics. We love how Rio may be a placewhere skyscrapers are going up and newmoney is pouring in, but you can still feelthe past when walking through traditionaldistricts like Lapa. There is great historicaland political context everywhere you go.

Rome

We were among the first people to stay inthe new JK Place Roma (jkroma.com), whichis one of the newest and most interestingproperties in town. Rome has always hadthese grand, iconic properties (like theHassler), but new spots like JK offer a greatplace for a cocktail or to just relax. We alsochart these interesting Romanneighborhoods with a sort of Brooklyn kindof vibe — areas like Monti, Testaccio and Ostiense; these places are a bit gritty and notas picture-perfect as Rome’s beautiful historic center.

West Texas

We all know about Marfa — which iswonderful — but our writer went waybeyond and discovered all sorts ofinteresting, charming towns few of has ever heard of. They’re places like Alpine, FortDavis and Marathon — which make for a great loop in the area along the Rio Grande. Ilove how this story has a little art, a little nature and a little fancy — all set against thisincredibly dramatic landscape.

Dearborn, Mich.

This one of those great Americandestinations that is right under our nose,but we never seem to get around to visiting.A key place we feature is the The Henry FordMuseum (thehenryford.org), which not onlyhouses the 1961 Lincoln Continentalconvertible in which JFK was shot, but alsothe actual segregated bus made famous byRosa Parks in 1955. This city and museumare really these incredible little jewels — and we hope to find even more in futureissues.
