They come in all ages and sizes, from all walks of life. They are
individuals and organizations. They are united for one cause: to keep
the vital services of the Red Cross alive and well in Chesapeake,
Norfolk, Portsmouth and Virginia Beach. Beginning
with the campaign kick-off March 1st and ending
March 31st, each Hero has pledged to raise at
least $1,000 which will be used by the Red Cross of Southeastern
Virginia for local programs and services including disaster relief, as-
sistance for fire victims, emergency military communications as well
as first aid, CPR, and disaster preparedness train-
ing. Watch for our Heroes and please be generous
when they ask you to support them. Please turn the page to meet them.

The Mission of the American Red Cross
The American Red Cross, a humanitarian organization led
by volunteers, guided by its Congressional Charter and the Fundamental Principles of the
International Red Cross Movement, will provide relief to victims of
disasters and help people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies.
Chapter Accomplishments July 1, 2007 - June 30, 2008
855people took their first steps in
recovering from a tragedy with Red Cross assistance when they lost their homes
to fires and storms.
1,612dental appointments were provided at
our Dental Clinic at Park Placeto people who had no other way to get dental care.
5,585people learned how to prepare for disasters affecting their families and their businesses through our
disaster education program.
3,969emergency services provided for service
members of local military families.
19,172individuals learned how to save a life
and became Red Crosscertified to perform CPR and First Aid.
31,509adults and children learned how to
swim and be safe in and around the water through our Red Cross Aquatics
and Water Safety Courses.
31,098units of Blood were collected at 1,161
area blood drives for patients in local hospitals.
And we were able to do all this because….
1,074dedicated volunteers gave their time to serve our community
in support of American Red Cross preparedness, response and community service programs
