Community Report 2015
2
welcome
1
Throughout the decades Groves Memorial Community Hospital (GMCH) has been a pioneer in delivering standard-‐setting, high quality, rural, medical care.
Our 44-‐bed acute care facility, located in the heart of Centre Wellington offers a wide range of services. We serve a local and regional population of over 34,500, and provide over 67,000 patient services annually.
Our hospital currently operates with over 298 staff, 112 Medical Staff and 260 dedicated volunteers.
Our mission, as a rural hospital, is to enable people to achieve optimal health through a range of integrated health services provided by a committed team working with a network of partners.
2
We value caring, accountability, respect, excellence -‐ all with integrity.
The next few years will be an exciting time for Groves Hospital as we work towards building a new Hospital – a facility that will improve the health and wellness of our community for years to come.
We are fortunate to have the support of our physicians, staff, volunteers, community, foundation and a governing board with a clear vision and commitment to providing quality health care services. It is the combination of all of these contributors that enables Groves Hospital to be a leader in the provision of excellent, compassionate, rural health care.
Welcome to our 2015-‐16 annual report to the community!

Encouraging patients to move while staying in the hospital
Patients often think that when they are in hospital they should stay in bed to recover. This may be true is some cases, but we also know that senior patients can lose up to 5% of their muscle strength per day while in hospital. That is why this year Groves Hospital implemented a new strategy called MoveON to encourage senior patients to stay active while they are admitted to the hospital. Hospital staff and volunteers mobilize patients at least three times per day and assess mobility within 24 hours of admission to the hospital.
Improving our Rural Mental Health Services
20% of Canadians will personally experience a mental health crisis in their life. When they do, they often end up at the local hospitals Emergency Department. Groves Hospital, NWHC, Guelph General Hospital and Homewood Health Centre are working together to improve mental health services. They include implementing processes to improve patient access to Homewood, improved follow-‐up care for patients, daily updates shared with the health partners on the availability of mental health beds, and adding a registry to CritiCall (a provincial, 24-‐hour emergency referral service for health care professionals to access.)
A culture of safety
This past year, physicians and staff from Groves Hospital and North Wellington Health Care (NWHC) participated in an obstetrical training program aimed at enhancing a culture of safety in every aspect of their work environment. The training program, referred to as MOREOB, focuses on patient safety as the priority, effective communication, teamwork, decreased hierarchy in emergences, practice for emergencies and reflective learning. The importance of detecting heart rhythms
A cardiac monitor is an important tool that is used to monitor a patient’s heart and vital system. This past year Groves Hospital added nine new monitors to its surgical recovery room, endoscopy room and emergency department. The monitor allows hospital staff to quickly identify changes in a patient’s heart rate and start treatment if required. Photo: Omar Mojadidi, Operating Room RN with new cardiac monitor.
Providing High Quality Patient Care

Making a positive impact…
Going Digital
Digital technology is changing the way we communicate and access information. This past year GMCH’s Health Information Services (HIS) department implemented a scanning solution for Emergency records. Emergency records, diagnostic results and medical transcription for patients who have visited any of our Wellington County hospitals is now available through a shared health information system to authorized health care providers on a need to know basis.
GMCH also adopted a provincial electronic delivery solution – Hospital Report Manager enabling clinicians to securely access medical transcription and radiology reports from their office. This provides more timely and improves access to patient information.
Leaders in Rural Health Care
This past year GMCH’s and NWHC’s, Diane Wilkinson, VP Patient Services/Chief Nursing Executive and Jerome Quenneville, President and CEO retired.
During Diane’s seven years with the organization she was known for her excellent work on quality and patient safety; leadership on Regional Committees; innovation of system improvements and transformations – to name just a few. The patient was always first and foremost in all of Diane’s work.
Over his eight years with the organization, Jerome was instrumental in moving forward three major Capital projects, the New Groves Hospital being one. He was a champion of rural health care and recognized the importance of building partnerships as the key to having successful, viable rural hospitals.
… through innovation and change
New Joint Executive Committee
In the spring of 2016, a new Joint Executive Committee (JEC) formed with Groves Hospital and North Wellington Health Care (NWHC). The JEC consists of five independently elected directors from NWHC and GMCH boards, including the Chairs of each Board.
The JEC oversees quality of patient care and resource utilization, while the boards of each hospital corporation continue to oversee medical staff, material clinical changes and relationships with the hospitals foundations and volunteer auxiliaries/association.
Working together the Boards of NWHC and GMCH create a stronger voice to advance health care issues in Wellington County and strengthen the organization’s ability to attract and retain staff and physicians.

Building for the future
Plans for the new Groves Hospital are moving ahead. The image above represents what the new hospital could potentially look like. While the design will likely change, the image represent a design which follows certain specifications established for the new hospital.
The above image, along with a very detailed project plan, was submitted to the Ministry of Health and Long-‐Term Care (MOHLTC) for approval in March 2016. The submission consisted of over 6,000 pages of specifications or “rules” design/build/finance bidders must comply with and be evaluated against.
Over the past year, GMCH staff, physicians and volunteers worked tirelessly with our consultants to develop the rules. User groups evaluated design options based on best practices, accessibility, infection prevention/control and departmental flow.
Once the MOHLTC approves the submission we will move on to hiring the team who will design, build and finance the new hospital. The bidding, evaluation, negotiation and award process is estimated to take up to 12 months and it is anticipated that construction will begin on the new hospital in mid-‐2017.
Expected to be completed in 2019, the new Groves Hospital will include:
þ A replacement hospital built on a greenfield site, with more space for emergency, ambulatory, diagnostic and inpatient services to accommodate the growing community
þ Private inpatient rooms (up to 80%) with a dedicated shower and large windows including some with views of the surrounding rural landscape and walking trails
þ Modernized infection control measures, including additional isolation facilities, to enhance the hospital’s ability to respond to a pandemic or disease outbreak
þ Up-‐to-‐date technology and clinical resources for physicians and staff
þ Energy efficient, sustainable and environmentally friendly building features
þ On-‐site helipad to allow for faster access to patient transfers by air ambulance

Groves Hospital Volunteer Association - turning compassion into action -
1
There are over 260 dedicated Volunteers at the Groves Hospital Volunteer Association (GHVA) who perform many duties helping to make Groves Hospital a compassionate health care facility. There are many areas where this help is provided.
In the hospital this includes – Christmas decorating; Information Desk/ER Desk; Clerical work; Supporting clinics and patient care in the Emergency Room (ER), Medical Floor, Chronic Continuing Care Unit; Grocery tapes; Hospital Elder Life Program (HELP); Newsletter; Sewing; Special events; Tray favours; Well Wishers; and Wheelchair maintenance.
Each of these roles assists the staff in providing the highest level of patient care.
A common trait offered by each of these volunteers is compassion. All those with whom the volunteers are in contact are greeted with a warm smile from a willing listener.
Located in the Hospital is the Gift Shop -‐ Fergus’ Hidden Treasure. Once again it is staffed by a group of volunteers who warmly greet patients, families and staff. The purchase of a good book for a patient, or a warm cup of coffee and cookie for a family member helps to take the edge off of a stressful situation.
2
The Gift Shop provides many unique gift ideas for all occasions.
When Christmas rolls around, patients and staff often find the Decorations set up by the volunteers goes a long way to lifting their spirits. Christmas decorations are placed throughout the Hospital in areas such as the Radiology Corridor, the Lobby, the Nurses’ Station in the first floor ward, the Maternity Ward, the Cafeteria, Emergency Waiting Room, Oncology Department, Physiotherapy, Doctors’ Offices and the Medical Floor.
The GHVA is proud of the role it has played in our community. Indeed, it is the support of that community and the hard work of its many volunteers that has made this possible.

GHVA’s New to You Store
- supporting Groves Hospital -
In addition to the activities in the Hospital the GHVA runs the New to You shop in a store located on Highway 6 at the north end of Fergus. The shop sells gently used articles donated by the surrounding communities. Volunteers perform tasks such as receiving donations at the shop, sorting, preparing for sale such items as linens, clothing, kitchen items, books, children’s clothes and many more. All of this effort makes the New to You Shop one of the largest retailers in Fergus and area.
All of the net proceeds from the Gift Shop and New to You Shop go to GMCH. Since 1933, GHVA has donated over $3 million dollars to the Hospital. This has all been made possible by the efforts of many volunteers over the past 80+ years.
All of the efforts of the Gift Shop and the New to You Shop continue to make a substantial contribution to GMCH. In keeping with this, the Groves Hospital Volunteers Association was pleased to announce on May 16, 2016 that it is pledging a further $1 million to the new Groves Hospital Campaign. This amount will be paid over the next ten years.

+ Groves Hospital Foundation Exciting things are happening here
1
Over the past year, there has been a tremendous amount of work completed at the Foundation and the hospital to further the progress of the New Groves Hospital Project.
The Groves Hospital Foundation’s very first Holiday Benefit Concert, featuring the Next Generation Leahy, was a huge success, bringing valuable awareness of the New Groves Hospital Project to a packed audience of over 300 people!
It is incredibly exciting to announce that the New Groves Hospital Campaign currently sits at over $9,260,000, which is 46% of our $20 Million goal. Your support of Groves has been breathtaking and the transformation in health care that is underway in Centre Wellington would not be possible without you!
One very notable recent donation was the $1 million commitment by the Groves Hospital Volunteer Association (GHVA). This transformational gift is the single largest donation
2
to the New Groves Hospital Project outside of the $5 million pledge from the County of Wellington. The GHVA’s generous gift, in addition to their $1 million gift to the Redevelopment Campaign, will name the road leading to the New Groves Hospital. The naming of the road is an appropriate tribute to the GHVA for all of their hard work and continued support of our hospital and will serve as an inspiration to all volunteers for years to come. Groves Hospital Foundation would like to extend our warmest appreciation and gratitude to all of the many volunteers who have been so benevolent; working together to make this pledge possible. Since their inception in 1933, the GHVA have previously contributed $3 million to Groves Hospital. Thank you to the GHVA for their amazing ongoing support of Groves!
