COUNSELORS CORNER Classroom Lessons Update In February, Mrs. Hicks reviewed the difference between tattling and reporting with first grade. Students learned about Kelso's Wheel of Strategies for Conflict Resolution and role-played different ways to solve problems. In March, Kindergarten will practice skills for developing friendships and strategies to navigate conflicts by identifying what makes our friends unique. Second graders will identify responsible and irresponsible behaviors at school and how their school counselor can help them to be successful as they begin to prepare for third grade. Ms. Calabrese will be teaching 3rd and 4th grade career lessons. 3rd grade learned what job skills are necessary for the most popular occupations they discussed in their minute meetings, created a resume, and had the opportunity to interview with an interview team! 4th grade reviewed and highlighted important aspects of their personality inventory and discussed some the realities of today’s workforce. Career Day 2018 Career Day 2018 is quickly approaching! This year, Career Day will be held on Friday, May 18th from 9:00-11:00. If you are interested in presenting, please contact the school counselors, Amanda Hicks and Kelly Calabrese, or the elementary guidance secretary Brenda Schmidt at [email protected] NSCW/Pennies for Patients Wrap-up During National School Counselor Week, students celebrated Meaningful Monday, Time Travel Tuesday, Welcoming Wednesday, Thankful Thursday, and School Spirit Friday. Since counselors love helping people, we wanted to make this a school-wide event to help people outside of our school by participating in Pennies for Patients, which benefits the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is an organization that raises money to help fight cancer. This year we were able to raise $2,859.58 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society during our National School Counselor Week! Mrs. Ruyak’s 4th grade class raised the highest amount ($446.40) and earned the Pasta For Pennies lunch sponsored by Olive Garden. The second place class is Mrs. Souilliard's 1st grade - they raised $196.56 and earned a pizza party. Thank you so much for participating! ACTIVITIES Girls On The Run: Our fifth season of Girls On The Run kicked off on March 13th! We welcome returning staff: Coach Hicks, Coach Calabrese, and Coach Boushell. We look forward to inspiring 3rd and 4th grade girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. WHILE WE WERE OUT… Here are highlights from conferences we attended this month: Last Session of K-12 Counseling Plan: We also discussed recent legislation changes focusing on ensuring each student has a plan once leaving high school and finalized the 339 plan for board approval SW-PBIS Networking Day: The School-Wide team focused on the rationale and benefits for the use of universal screening tools for behavior SAP Consortium: The Student Assistance Program teams in the Lehigh Valley heard helpful tips regarding assessing suicidal ideation among students SAUCON VALLEY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL FEBRUARY/MARCH 2018 [email protected] [email protected] What’s going on at SVES? Community Outreach-SVES Counselors On January 30th, Dr. Craig Butler invited the SVES counselors to present some additional information about the elementary counseling program. Previously known as Guidance Counselors, the role in the beginning of the 20th century began with a focus on vocational guidance programs. In 2003, the National Center for Transforming School Counseling (NCTSC) focused on both changing counselor education at the graduate level and changing practice in local districts to teach counselors how to prevent, intervene with, and close achievement and opportunity gaps. Now known as “school counselors,” we discussed supports for all SVES students and the various interventions for students that need additional supports. FEATURED RESOURCE: Project Child Parenting Classes: These free classes promote positive parenting, knowledge of child and youth development, and community resources. Group Topics include understanding stress/stress management; child development; discipline/ challenging behaviors; taking care of ourselves/emotions and emotional awareness; nonverbal communication and listening skills *Free Childcare, at Bethlehem Location: Thurs at 7-8:30 PM Contact Project Child (267)-930-4625 to register.
