A CASUAL CONVERSATIONA CASUAL CONVERSATION

It was a number of years ago [too many toremember], but I can still remember vividlythe conversation and the physical context, and I can even now recollect whatwent through my mind the moment I heard it. I was stunned, caught short, wondering if I had actually heard what I thought I had just heard. But I had- and there was no doubt about it. Dumfounded and caught short as to howto respond [for me to be caught short on how to respond requires someconsiderable dumfounding], I simply nodded my head awkwardly.

It was following a quiet, traditional service of Holy Communion celebrated

Page 11: community of disciples, a house of with the city in its ...gracebythesea.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/Newsletter-17-Septemb… · 17.09.2017  · horrible leaving work on a Friday

on a Thursday morning amongst about a dozen or so of some of the nicest, gentlest and faithful folks you would ever meet. The service had gone well, that is to say, there had been no major foibles on my part [I had neitherspilt the wine nor dropped a communion host down the all-too-low front of abuxom young woman's dress - yes, it actually happened - once] and I wasstanding at the back of the side chapel, greeting the communicants as theydeparted for their day's activities. Brief and casual conversation ensued witheach one, until I was caught up in a meatier encounter of some theologicaldepth; in many respects, a kind of confession but without there being anydesire for absolution.

In the course of the conversation this middle-late aged lady, who carriedherself with all the dignity and aplomb [I've eagerly awaited the occasion touse this word] I had come to expect from the rather significant deposit ofEnglish war-brides resident in the parish, shared that she never said all ofthe Lord's Prayer whenever the Prayer was said. I, of course, inquired ofher as to what she meant and what part of the Prayer she would want toleave out. Her response was brilliant in terms of its theological awarenessand dumfounding in its impact. She told me, "I never say, 'as we forgivethose who trespass against us'". I didn't really have to ask her why, but Idid anyway, and received the answer I knew in my knower she would offer."I remain silent at that part of the Prayer," she shared, "because there arethose I am not willing to forgive and I do not want that this should interferewith the forgiveness I need myself. After all, the petition is conditional, isn'tit?" At that very moment, I knew what a mouse must feel when cornered bya cat.

In Matthew's Gospel, Jesus 'commanded' the disciples [us] to keep shortaccounts with one another [MT 18.15-20] and how to move in a pastorallyordered process through the brokenness of relationships in seekingrestoration and healing, He then proceeded to lay out the theological [andeschatologically practical] reason as to why this practice of forgiving was sonecessary in the matrix of the new community established in His Name [MT18.23-35]. The message is really quite simple - not an easy one to swallow- but quite simple, nevertheless. If you refuse to forgive others when youyourselves have been forgiven much, then you will forfeit for yourself thevery forgiveness you so desperately need and have received. Jesus mostassuredly originated the modern axiom, "what goes around, comes around."[I especially like the Finnish version, "minkä taakseen jättää, sen edestäänlöytää,' which is to say, "what you leave behind you, you will find in front ofyou"]. It is all so very true. And may I say, rather frightening as well.

In Matthew 18 Jesus tells what we are to do about broken relationships[mend them] and how it is we are to go about this most exquisite work[courageously, by being humble, open and honest and going to the personwho has sinned against us]. Then He tells us why we need to enter into thisprocess leading to reconciliation [if we don't, it will not bode well for us interms of our being forgiven by the Father]. And if it was not bad enough atthat, then there is that allusion to being tortured [?] until the whole debt is

Page 12: community of disciples, a house of with the city in its ...gracebythesea.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/Newsletter-17-Septemb… · 17.09.2017  · horrible leaving work on a Friday

paid. What on earth is Jesus [meek and mild] talking about? Is it possiblethat to the degree I resist in seeking reconciliation with one who hasdamaged me, hurt me, sinned against me, I [and not the other personwhich would be much more to my liking] will continue to carry some residueof defilement as if bearing some crippling burden. And crippled I willbecome over time.

This is one of those irritating principles of the Gospel that really doesn't sitvery well with the manner in which I normally wish to conduct theadventure of daily living. It challenges my cowardice and apathy in livingwith others. In the end I realize it is placed before me not as a threat butrather as a basic fact of life in the Kingdom of God - a warning from theFather of Lights, in Whom there is no darkness at all, that persistence inunforgivingness on my part will have dire consequences and that they areinescapable.

Fr. Paul+

Obeying God Out of Slavish Fear

A short time ago, I was walking with a friendwho doesn't attend church, and we passed alarge Catholic parish that was in the middle ofSaturday evening mass. The parking lot was full, and I remarked how thechurch was really "bringing 'em in!" My friend's response caught me offguard: "Well, yeah, but it's because they're all afraid they're going to hell!"Apparently, this person's experience of the church had been very negative.Everything in the church was guilt and fear-driven; one goes to church orlives a moral life simply out of fear. Not a fun way to spend a Saturdaynight!

When God Calls You - But YourSpouse Disagrees One of the most important and shortest talks Iever had with Bob Buford-later to be my boss-was in 2008. I'd come to hisorganization, Halftime, to find clarity about whether to leave my career infinance for a nonprofit. But first I found myself in a chair next to him. "Lisa'snot where I am on this," I said referring to my wife. "I'm ready to go, andshe's not there."
