How about Facebook and Twitter? Or other networks where you can meet like-minded people?

Do you have a blog? We hear Tumblr is rather entertaining.

…We won’t ask if you have a mobile phone or not; that would seem rather silly.

But we might ask you about that mobile data plan. Are you online all day long? At home, at school, and on that family gathering where the aunt kept rambling forever; sure, staying online is what kept you sane through that dinner.Not being on some social network isn’t even an option anymore. And if you’re on a reasonable mobile plan, not taking advantage of unlimited texting sounds bizarre.

We’re aware of this, and it’s cool. You’re making use of what the world offers to stay connected with your friends, classmates, and family. You might even be using it to talk to that person who added you a few weeks ago with whom you have a few common friends. Have you ever met them? Maybe, maybe not.

But have you come across a situation in which a classmate’s status message made it to the top of your newsfeed because of the tons of negative comments bashing them? Have you been in a situation in which someone you know, or don’t know, kept texting you with mean or harsh stuff for no reason?

Unlike the mean attitude of schoolyard bullies who steal lunch money or annoy you in class, being attacked online has nothing to do with your looks, how popular you are, or who you sit with during lunch. It can happen to anyone, anywhere, and the easier access to technology has become, the more people fall victim to online bullying, or what we can call cyberbullying.


So what is cyberbullying?Afifteenyearoldgirlfrom Englandtoldherowntripthroughcyberbullying.Oneday,shereceivedaFacebookfriendrequestfromagood-lookingguy,andthey started messagingeachother.Bitbybit,she started to have strongfeelingsforhim;afterall,hewasnice,understanding,andshehadalotoffuntalkingtohimeveryday.Shewasn’tinloveyet,butitevolvedintoasweetrelationship,forthreemonths.However,sheoncesawaromanticpostonhisFacebookpagebyanothergirl,andgotalittlejealous.“What is this about?” she needed an answer.

Whatfollowedwasunpredictable.Shereceivedmessagesfrompeoplewhoclaimedtobehisrelatives,tellingherthehorrifyingnews:herboyfriendhadtakenalethalcocktailofalcoholanddrugsandkilledhimselfaftershehadaccusedhimofbeingunfaithful.AFacebooktributepagefortheboywascreated,withovertwothousandpeoplejoiningin.Thepoorgirlstartedreceivingthreateningcalls,textsandFacebookmessages,accusingherofdrivinghimtosuicide.

“Youneedtositdown,thereisnodeadboy”,saidthepolice.

Thatwasasurprise.Atfirst,themotherthoughtherdaughterwasavictimtopedophilia,butthegirlexplainedthatshehadmetherboyfriend,orsoshethought.She

wasintroducedonenightafterdrinkingwithfriendsataparktotheboy.

He looked a lot like the Facebookprofile

picture.

They

kissed,and she

went home delighted.

Buthewasimaginary.

The boy neverexisted.Instead,two

sixteenyearolds were behind thatFacebookaccount,andtheyweretheoneswhoinventedeverydetailofthehoax,asameansofrevenge,becausethegirlhadbeengoingoutwithoneofthebullies’ex-boyfriends.Whennoreportsofsuddendeathswerefound,thegirlswerearrestedandmadetoapologizeforcausingharmtothevictimwhowasfooledtothinkshewasinarelationshipforthreemonths.

Itsoundsratherhorrible,no?That’soneserious,butnotextreme,exampleofwhatcyberbullyingislike.Inotherwords,cyberbullying,oronlinebullying,happenswhenafellowteenager,whocouldbeaclassmate,afriend,aformerfriend,aneighbor,orpretty


muchanyoneyouknow,ordon’tknow,usestechnologytohurtorembarrasssomeoneelse.Thistechnologycouldbeanythingthatallowscommunication,whetheritistheInternetoramobilephone,andcouldbeusedtosendorposttext,imagesorvideosthatareintentionally mean.

Who is the cyberbully?Acyberbullycanbeprettymuchanyone,nomatterhowinnocentlooking.Moreoftenthannot,theydon’tfittheinsanesociopathstereotypicalimagefilmsgiveusaboutonlineharassers.Infact,somecyberbullyingvictimsregularlyswitchfromthevictimtothebullyrole,andviceversa.Itnotuncommontofindcyberbullyingvictimstendingtodefendthemselves the very same way they are attacked!

We don’t know how someone elsemightmisunderstandourintentions.Sometimes,the words are taken out of contextormisplaced,tosaysomethingthatcouldhurtsomeone else.

Does it really hurt?Yes,itdoes.It’struethatyoucannotpunchsomeonerightthroughtheirscreen,butcyberbullyingcanactuallybemoreharmful.Youmightnotseethebruises,buttheyleavedeeperscars.

Thefactthat this harassment happensonline or throughmobilephonesmakesiteasytoreachthevictim.Whilehomeusedtobetheplaceweseekrefugefromtheouterworldwhereschoolbullyinghappens,cyberbullyingpenetratesthebrickwallsofhomeandintoourhearts.Italsohappens24/7;evenwhenthevictimchoosesnottoseeit,theycouldwakeupthe

nextmorningtofindafloodofmeanmessagesandsharedpicturesaboutthem.Apartfromfeelingmajorlyhurt,thiscouldleadtofeelingfrustrated,angry,andpossiblythreatened.Hereareafewotherpossibleimpacts:

• Adropingrades• Lowself-esteem• Adepressedattitude• Withdrawalfromfriends,andnotwanting

tohangoutwiththem• Notwantingtoattend

school• Self-harm• Inextremecases:suicide

But why exactly does cyberbullying happen?

While it is sometimes difficulttoknowwhatexactlyisgoingoninthemindofabully,usually,acyberbullyismotivated by frustration oranger.Maybetheywanttogetbackatthemean remark that was

made to them or to a friend atschool,butdidn’tfeeltheyhadthecouragetoreplyface-to-face,orwanttotakerevengeafterarejectionorbreakup.

Sometimes,theybullysomeoneforentertainment,becausetheyhavesomuchtimeon their hands and lots of way to communicatewithothers,and

theyfeeltheneedtograbattentionorgetareactionoutofsomeone.There’salsothecliqueor“gang”culture;forexample,ifagirlbecomesfriendswithsomeoneoutsidethe


group,therestwouldattackheronlineandpostoldembarrassingpicturesofher,probablyoutof jealousy.

Whilepopular“meangirls”cyberbullyotherstoremindthemoftheirsocialstandingatschool,somebullieshavelowselfconfidence,andcompensatethatwithharassingsomeonerepetitivelysothattheyhavesomesortofdominanceorinfluenceupontheirlives.Tech-savvy nerds who are bullied in real life may feel theneedtobethe“toughguy”online,wheretheycanusethetechtoolsthey’refamiliarwith.Theleastproblematicreasonistostandupforotherswhoarebeingbullied,whichisnotthebestwaytodealwithit,sinceyoucannotrightthewrongwithanotherwrong.

What about sexting?Onceuponatime,a12-yearoldgirlsentanexplicitphototoherthenboyfriendbecause“hesaidhelovedmeandifIcaredabouthim,I’ddoit…AfterIsenthimthatpicture,heignoredmeandput[it]uponBeboandFacebooksayingIwaseasy”.Theboyfriend,wholaterbecameanex-boyfriend,usedthispictureandletitcirculatetheInternetforyearstocome.

Everyonelookeddownuponher,andshestartedself-harming,untilshetragicallytookaway her own life.

Notallsextingincidentsarethattragic,agreed.Buttheactoftakingandsendingnudeorsemi-nudepicturesthroughtextmessagesorinternet-enabledmobilephonescanleadtoveryseriousconsequences.Someonecouldfindaboutthosepicturesandforwardthemtoothers,andperhapsabreakupwouldleadtohavingthosepicturesleakedonline.Whatifaparentfindsoutaboutthem?Evenworse…whatifsomeotheradultfoundthem,anddecidedtousethemtoposeasateenageronline?ThefactthatanyonecanbevirtuallyanonymousontheInternethelpsthatalotandnobodymighteverfindout.

Professional ReferralUpon attending a pre-application information session with an AHS addiction counsellor, the counsellor will provide the parent/guardian with written confirmation of attendance. The parent/guardian must provide this proof of attendance at the time of applying for a protection order. Youth may enter the PChAD program only if a protection order is granted by the court.


Fry is a street term for marijuana or tobaccocigarettesthataredippedinPCP(phencyclidine)and/orembalmingfluid,andthendried.

PCPwasdevelopedinthe1950sasanintravenousanesthetic,butitsuseforhumanswasdiscontinuedbecauseitcausedpatientstobecomeagitated,delusional,andirrational.TodayindividualsabusePCPbecauseofthemind-altering,hallucinogeniceffectsitproduces.

Embalmingfluidisacompoundofformaldehyde,methanol,ethanol(ethylalcohol),andothersolvents.Embalmingfluidreportedlyproducesahallucinogeniceffectandcausesthecigarettetoburnmoreslowly,potentiallyresultinginaprolongedhigh.

Marijuanaisthemind-alteringsubstanceproducedfromaplantwiththescientificnameCannabisstiva.Thedrugisusedbecauseitsprimaryactivechemical--tetrahydrocannabinol(THC)--mayinducerelaxationandheightenthesenses.

What are the risks?AbusersareoftenunawarethatfrymaycontainPCP.PCPisanaddictivedrug;itsuseoftenresultsinpsychologicaldependence,craving,andcompulsivePCP-seekingbehaviors.PCPproducesunpleasantpsychologicaleffects,andusersoftenbecomeviolentorsuicidal.PCPposesparticularrisksforyoungpeople--evenmoderateuseofthedrugcannegativelyaffectthehormonesassociatedwithnormalgrowthanddevelopment.PCPusecanalsoimpedethelearningprocessinteenagers.High

dosesofPCPcancauseseizures,coma,andevendeath(oftenasaconsequenceofaccidentalinjuryorsuicidewhileunderthedrug’seffects).Athighdoses,PCP’seffectsmayresemblethesymptomsassociatedwithschizophrenia,includingdelusionsandparanoia.Long-termuseofPCPcanleadtomemoryloss,difficultywithspeechorthought,depression,andweightloss.TheseproblemscanpersistforuptoayearafteranindividualhasstoppedusingPCP.

Effectsfromexposuretoembalmingfluidincludebronchitis,bodytissuedestruction,braindamage,lungdamage,impairedcoordination,andinflammationandsoresinthethroat,nose,andesophagus.Embalmingfluidisextremelycarcinogenic.Becausecigarettessoakedwithembalmingfluidtendtoburnmoreslowly,usersmayexperienceincreasednegativesideeffects.

RecentlyayoungmaninAlbertawastakentohospitalsufferingfromfirstandseconddegreeburnswhenane-cigaretteexplodedinhisface.Ecigarettes,orvapours,firstcametothemarketin2004andsincethentheyhavegrowninpopularity.Althoughgenerallyseenassafetherehavebeennumerousreportsofe-cigarettesexploding.

Thislatesteventreportedleftthe16yearoldwithpainfulburnsonhisfaceanddamagetohisteeth,whichrequiredtworootcanalsduetotheexplosion.

Charging System for E-CigarettesItshouldbenotedthatinNorthAmericaregularcigarettesarereportedtocauseoverhalfamilliondeathseachyear.Therearealsoabout8,000residentialfiresstartedbycigaretteseachyearsoclearly,cigarettesarestillamuchhigherrisk.So,whatcausestheexplosionsandresultinginjuries?

Mostoftheexplosionsoccurduringthechargingphase.MostelectronicdeviceshaveaUSBportthatconnectsthroughapoweradaptortochargethedevice.Thesecharging

cordsareeasilydetachedfromthechargersuppliedandpluggedintootheroutletssuchasacomputer.Justbecauseitfitsdoesnotmeanitiscompatible.

ThefollowingstatementwasreleasedbyFEMA,FederalEmergencyManagementAgency.“Manye-cigarettesuselithiumbatteriesduetotheirabilitytostorelargeamountsofenergyinacompactamountofspace.However,theinherentcharacteristicsoflithiumbatteriescanposeariskoffireandexplosion.Partialthicknessburnscausedbyspontaneouslyexplodingmobilephoneshasbeendescribedintheliterature.Thelithiumionbatteryhasseparatelybeendescribedasthe‘mini-bombinyourpocket,’duetoitsknownabilitytospontaneouslyignite.Poordesign,useoflow-qualitymaterials,manufacturingflawsanddefects,andimproperuseandhandlingcanallcontributetoaconditionknownas‘thermalrunaway,’wherebytheinternalbatterytemperaturecanincreasetothepointofcausingabatteryfireorexplosion.”

ifnotalloftheirmoneygettinghighondrugs,thantakingcareoftheirchildren,andraisingtheminacleanenvironment.Someoftheparentsareonlychildrenthemselves.

AsIsaidbefore,we’rehuman,andwehavefeelings.Ithurtsknowingthatthesechildrenmaynevergettoseeanddothingsthatotherchildrenwithloving,caring,hardworkingparentsaredoing.IwonderifanyofthemwillevergettoseethatmagicalwonderlandcalledDisney World.

Therehavebeenhundredsofreportedincidentsofelectronicchargersoverheating,causingfires,andevenresultingindeath.OnerecentincidenthappenedwhenAmandaLapiduswasinbedandherIPadwaspluggedintoachargeronthetablenexttoher.Whenshetouchedthecordtothedeviceshefeltitwasveryhot.Theendofthecablewasmelting.Sheimmediatelyunpluggeditandavertedwhatcouldhavebeenaseriousincident.

Lapiduswasusingathirdpartymanufacturedcharger,supposedlymadebyanAmericanmanufacturerofconsumerelectronics.ThedevicewaslabelledtoindicatethatitwasapprovedforAppledevicesbutobviouslyitwasacounterfeitandnotapprovedatall.

Applehasawarningonitswebsitewarningcustomersaboutcounterfeitproducts.
