PLANNING YOUR COLLECTION EVENT

PLANNING STEP 1: FUNDING
• Lower Rio Grande Valley Development Council
• Distribute Solid Waste grant money for a variety of projects over 3 counties: Cameron, Hidalgo, Willacy
• FY14-15 Budget = $220,000 Funds for FY15 projects have been assigned
PLANNING STEP 2: VENDORS
• Recommendation: utilize vendors that have solid experience with HHW collection
• Vendors can be for the hazardous management or specialty materials (used oil, tires, electronics, etc.)

PLANNING STEP 4: NOTIFICATION
• MUST be received a minimum of 45 days prior to the collection event or program start date
• This is the last thing, not the first thing to do.
• Permission letter from property owner: even if city or county property (for 1-Time or Permanent Facility).
• Additional requirements for other program types
PLANNING STEP 4: DOCUMENTATION
• All programs must report by April 1 of the following year.
• COG report will not satisfy the reporting requirement, it must come to EAD/HHW program using TCEQ-20474
• Provide reporting form to contractor ahead of time
PLANNING STEP 5: PUBLIC EDUCATION
• A strong reuse program will reduce the financial and environmental impact of a HHW collection
• Thoughtful site selection will help event flow smoother
• Take advantage of TCEQ publications

• BOPA (Batteries, Oil, Paint, Antifreeze) Collection– Specifically exempt from Subchapter N – Appropriate management is still required
• Electronics Recycling Event or Promotion– Texas Recycles Computers & Texas Recycles TVs – OR single collection event contracted through an
authorized recycler
