    THE LESSON. Ecclesiasticus 44. 22.

HE blessing of the Lord was upon the head of therighteous. Therefore the Lord gave him an

heritage; and divided his portion among the twelvetribes. And he found favour in the sight of all flesh. And the Lord magnified him so that his enemies stood

in fear of him. By his words he caused the wonders tocease: he made him glorious in the sight of kings, andgave him a commandment for his people, and showedhim his glory. He sanctified him in his faithfulness andmeekness, and chose him out of all men. He gave himcommandments before his face, even the law of life andknowledge, and exalted him. An everlasting covenanthe made with him: the Lord beautified him withornaments of righteousness: and clothed him with arobe of glory.

THE GOSPEL. St Matthew 13. 9.

ESUS said, He who hath ears to hear, let him hear. And his disciples came, and said unto him, Why

speakest thou unto them in parables? He answered

and said unto them, To you it is given to know themysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it isnot given. For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have in abundance; but whosoever hathnot, from him shall be taken even that he hath. Therefore speak I unto them in parables, because theysee and see not, and they hear and hear not, neither dothey understand. And in them is fulfilled the prophecyof Isaiah which said,

Hearing, ye shall hear and shall not understand,And seeing, ye shall see and not perceive; For the heart of this people is become fat,And with their ears they hardly hear,And their eyes they have shut,Lest they should see with their eyes,And hear with their ears,And understand with their heart,And should turn, and I should heal them.

But blessed are your eyes, for they see; and your ears,

for they hear. Verily, I say unto you, that manyprophets and righteous men have desired to see thosethings which ye see, and have not seen: and to hearthose things which ye hear, and have not heard.
