1Loss of Power SourceFirst things first, check the power source - loss of power could prevent your roller shutter from operating.

Check the fuses in the control panels and the mains breaker board. If the power source has failed, a battery back-up will keep things moving temporarily if access is required through the shutter door. If you have one, just use the shutter door as normal until the power source is back up and running.

2Dirt within the tracksA build up of dirt or debris can cause your roller shutter to make irregular movements, run slowly, or stop the door from running completely.

Using a stiff brush to clear the tracks and applying grease helps to lubricate the workings of the shutter helping it to operate smoothly, safely and quietly. If you find that you are still having issues with juddering, noise, or slow operation then the alignment of the door may be at fault and you will need a shutter engineer to inspect the door.

3Dents and DamageCheck the shutter door structure for damage, which may hinder operation or stop the door from opening and closing completely.

Buckles and dents are common, particularly within commercial and industrial shutters where forklifts and other heavy machinery are in operation.

Smaller dents to the shutter may not cause great problems however, for larger damage caused by heavy machinery, the lath and bottom rail will likely need to be replaced. It is crucial not to use the shutter if it has been impacted, as further damage is very likely to result.

Once the damaged parts have been replaced, the alignment should be checked to ensure the security and safety of the shutter is not compromised.

4Faulty MotorMotor failure is a reasonably common fault with shutters which can result in total failure of the shutter, and the motor needing to be repaired or replaced.

Regular servicing should identify the need for a replacement before failure occurs. Make sure you carry out an honest assessment of how often the shutter is being used each day so the correct motor can be specified.

5Sensor FaultIndustrial shutters with 3-phase motors and GfA control panels will display a variety of codes if there are any problems in the system.

A particularly common code to see is F1.6, this is displayed when there is a fault with the sensor. This is usually paired with symptoms such as a shutter opening but not closing.

A leading cause of this problem can be attributed to the rubber strip at the bottom of the shutter. Over time this strip can perish and become less flexible, particularly in cold weather. A quick and easy solution is to massage the rubber to open up the sensor where any crushing is taking place.

Another cause for the 1.6 error code to appear is a low battery. If you can get to the sensor attached to the bottom of the shutter, it is worth inspecting the batteries. A quick remedy to get you going is to give it the ‘TV remote treatment’ ie, all the things you do to the batteries when they are low in your TV remote - shake them, tap them against a hard surface, or move them around in the container. This should keep the shutter going for a little while.

If a replacement battery is required, pay special attention to the codes and voltages on the one you are replacing - although most are similar in appearance to AA and D type batteries, they are specialist cells and need to be replaced like-for-like.

6Roller Shutter ServicingWe recommend an annual service of any shutters to ensure that the shutter is operating safely and that all parts are in working order.

This is particularly true if your shutter is over an area that is passed through by the general public ( shop fronts, entrances etc.), in these situations EU legislature states that proof of an annual service is required to keep you on the right side of Health & Safety laws.
