Reverend’s Reverie
“Our God is an awesome God he reigns
From heaven above with wisdom, power and love
Our God is an awesome God.”
Do you know this song? It’s called “Awesome God.” It is a beautifully moving hymn, in which the words are repeated many times, often in different musical keys. It’s a hymn that often stays in my head, reminding me that God’s love is with me always. If you don’t know the tune, perhaps we will sing it during worship sometime! Or you can always “Google” it if you’d like to hear the music and joy behind it.
For some reason, this morning it has gotten stuck in my head! But I’m loving it, because I love the words and the tune! Why? Because I am certain that God is right here with me, in my times of joy, sorrow, amusement, and trouble.
What about you? Do you have that same certainty? Or do you doubt or wonder if God is really with you when you need or want God to give you support and strength? I totally understand if you don’t have that certainty, for life throws such unexpected happenings at us that we often ask the questions, “Why?,” and, “Where is God in all of this?”
And I understand because I too spent many years asking those same questions. But I believe things changed for me when God and I started arguing about whether or not I should respond to God’s call to ministry. I knew I was not worthy. I knew I was not the wonderful person that I always thought ministers had to be. I knew I had done things in my life that I was ashamed of. I knew there was no way I could speak in front of people, for I was much too shy. I knew there was no way I could be a minister. And I knew that God had gotten this whole idea terribly wrong.
But God kept after me. And my response to God finally changed, as I gave in. But I said to God, “If you really want me to do this, even though I am not worthy, You will have to prepare me. You will have to make me ready.” So God won the argument. And I ended up winning too! For God did prepare me! And I now cannot imagine doing anything other than being God’s servant!
Back to “Awesome God” and its words. When I hear it aloud, or just in my mind, it puts me into a place of wonder. And I see myself as a very young child, sitting cross-legged on my bed, feeling very alone, and very sad. But I so clearly remember a feeling that came over me. I didn’t understand it. I had no idea what it was. But I felt like something was watching over me and protecting me from the trials of my life. The feeling was there. And it was powerful. And I will never forget the memory of it.
But now I know what it was. I now 100% know what it was. That feeling could only be one thing. It was God! It was God all the time, God who walked with me through all of my dark times. It was God all the time, Who helped me to never give up on life. It was God all the time, Who led me to understand that God is always with me, and that God is always with all of you too! And it was God all the time, Who used my imperfect life, and was preparing me for God’s unexpected call to service.
While it may be hard sometimes to believe that it is true, I hope and pray that you will sometime feel a stirring inside of you that you do not understand, let it settle into your heart and soul, and know that it is God.
And always believe these words of God: “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10). It is amazing what can happen in our times of silence.

Who Remembers The Advent Workshops???
Guess what? They’re back!
WHEN: On December 2nd, from 1pm-4pm
WHERE: New Fellowship Hall
For WHOM: Members and guests of all ages
WHAT is it: The Christian Ed committee is bringing back the traditional Advent
Workshop for members and guests of all ages! This has been a
long tradition in our church and holds a lot of memories for our
members. This year we are spicing things up with an Advent
Wreath Theme. Come share in the Love, Joy, Hope and Peace
in the new fellowship hall and release your inner child with some
Holiday fun! People of all ages are invited to relax and let their
creative minds go to work creating a variety of Christmas themed
ornaments and gifts. Refreshments and hot cocoa will be provided.
Donations for supply costs would be appreciated. We are also look-
ing for volunteers to help oversee the various crafting tables. A
volunteer sheet will be posted in the old fellowship hall along with a
donations box. Please see Kristy Johnston for more details.
Christian Ed Update: Collections for the Food Panty donations in November. Our goal is 150 boxes of stuffing and 150 reusable bags. Children will be decorating a collections box to be put in the Narthex. Deadline is Sunday November 18. Thank you.

A VISIT FROM NEHEMIAH HOUSE On Sunday September 30th, we were pleased to host Stephen and Sherry Danalis, of Nehemiah House in Granby, Connecti-cut, to our morning worship service. Donna Sullivan, Chairperson of our Missions Committee, in-troduced them to the congregation. They then spoke about how they and Nehemiah House support mothers-to-be and new mothers with newborns who are in need of many types of support and services. LAITY SUNDAY!
October 21, 2018, was our Laity Sunday Worship Service! Laity Sunday gives those in the congregation an opportunity to participate in the entire service of worship! Our lay members did a fantastic job of creating a meaningful and spiritual worship time for all of us. Our preacher was Eric Nitsch, who
delivered a fantastic sermon called "Life is a Song." Other participants in the service were Diane Orson, Sonya Murray, Dawn Turgeon, and Jane Thompson. We thank all of them for making our Laity Sunday such a meaningful experience.

THE COMMISSIONING OF OUR PASTORAL SEARCH COMMITTEE
On October 14, 2018, our congregation commissioned our Pastoral Search Committee and acknowledged their dedica-tion to the process of finding and proposing a new settled
pastor for our church. The Search Committee committed to their task on behalf of all of us, while we, the congregation,
committed to supporting them in their efforts.

A meeting was held in the Sanctuary of the church immediately following worship. Patty Banasik, acting as temporary moderator, called the meeting to order at 11:18 am. The meeting was opened with a prayer by Jim Putnam.
A roll call was held resulting in 38 members present and therefore a quorum was met for voting purposes.
Craig Perras, Chairman of the Building & Grounds Committee, was availa-ble for questions from the congregation regarding the possibility of contracting with a third party, Blue Sky Tower, to house a cell tower in our church’s stee-ple.
Below are the questions and points of discussion raised by those present with responses by Craig (in italics):
What type of maintenance will be required of our steeple for the cell tower? There should be no maintenance on our part.
If the church needs to do any maintenance/upkeep on the steeple, will the towers need to be turned off by the carrier? No
Will the church need additional liability insurance or will we be named on the carrier’s policy? Probably it is the carrier’s responsibility to carry the liability coverage but not sure yet.
How will our electricity be used? A subpanel will be connected into our main panel. The 3
rd party carrier will pay for all of the church’s electricity.
Who is the carrier? Blue Sky Tower is a 3rd
party carrier and they will sub-contract out to carriers, mostly Verizon and AT&T. The 3
rd party will keep
half of the proceeds from the lease and the church will keep half.
Does the church have to go before the town’s Planning Board? A town se-lectman told us no, but the 3
rd party carrier would need to pull the proper
permits.
Have we contacted other churches to find out their experiences? A church in Connecticut was contacted by one of our church members and that church stated they have been very pleased with their decision to house a cell tower. Lyn, our office administrator, has contacted several churches. Some churches just have their electrical bill covered; others are bringing in additional revenue.
It was recommended to have a contract all set and signed before any instal-lation begins.
What is the potential revenue for the church? We would split any revenue 50/50 with the 3
rd party carrier – possibly $1,000-$2,000 per month or more
depending on the contract and the carriers involved.
Structurally, will the steeple support the weight of a cell tower? The compa-ny would shore up any structural issues if necessary.
Will the cell tower have any feedback effect when the organ is being used? Not sure.
A suggestion was made to require a mock-up/model to see how it is going to look on our steeple.

All-Church Meeting Minutes October 11, 2018
The meeting was called to order at 8:05 p.m. Rev. Susanne offered an opening prayer.
Roxanne Cook made a motion to nominate the following members for positions:
Patti Wood – Nominating Committee
Terry Putnam – Interim Moderator
Jim Putnam – Finance Committee and Interim Moderator pro-temp in Terry’s absence.
Robin Sklarksi – Finance Committee
The motion was seconded with a unanimous vote to accept all names.
Jim Putnam, as acting Moderator, made a motion to accept the Minutes of the September 9
th All-Church Committee Meeting which was seconded and
passed unanimously.
It was noted we are just beginning this process and most questions will be answered as we go forward.
It was noted this is a great opportunity for revenue/income for this church and this cell tower proposal should be strongly considered. We should allow this company to proceed and questions will be ironed out during the contracting process.
A strong suggestion was brought forth for the church to obtain an attorney to represent our church and to protect ourselves during this process.
A member with a strong sense of stewardship regarding this church at the center of our town suggested we consider designating all revenue from this opportunity to go towards supporting the care, upkeep, and mainte-nance of this building.
It was felt it was important to maintain the integrity of the structure of our steeple as an historic building.
It was suggested we request the 3rd
party carrier to give the church body a presentation of what they plan to do.
A motion was made and seconded to go forward with a vote on the issue as stated below:
We will proceed with taking the first step in allowing the 3rd
party carrier to survey our property for the viability of installing a cell tower. Another all-church meeting will be held in the future for a second vote to finalize the church’s decision on whether to proceed with a contract with Blue Sky Tower.
Results of a show of hands vote: 38 yes votes 0 no votes
The meeting was adjourned at 11:47 am.

Minister’s Report:
Rev. Susanne has been asked to do the invocation for the Veterans’ Day Ceremonies which marks the 100
th anniversary of the Armistice. We have
been asked to ring our church bell 21 times at 10:55 am on that day and Patty Banasik and Roxanne Cook volunteered to do that. Rev. Susanne has been getting a lot of feedback that announcements during our church service cannot be heard so her husband Michael will be setting up a stand-ing microphone in the front of the church. Regarding a Safe Church Policy, Rev. Susanne now has an off-premise form, an incident form, and a volun-teer driver qualifications form that need to be signed when working with our youth and she now has authorization to run CORI checks on all volunteers working with our youth. Jim Putnam has volunteered to work with Rev. Su-sanne to update our Safe Church Policy and will request this policy be part of our by-laws when complete. Brief discussion on charging for funeral bulletins to be printed which was referred to the Finance and Deacons committees to further discuss.
Treasurer:
Ted Orson presented an updated financial report for the first ¾’s of the year. We are running about $8,000 over budget currently but with our de-creased salary expenses for our part-time interim minister he feels we will probably not have a deficit by the end of the year. Motion made, seconded and passed unanimously to accept the Treasurer’s report.
Deacons:
Patty Banasik reported 5 members present. Laity Sunday has been firmed up for 10/21/18. Active Shooter Training Seminar was discussed at an estimated cost of $500-700 to include a site assessment and written security plan for the church. The committee was asked to see what the UCC has to offer. They reviewed the monthly prayer list and discussed Advent season plans. Please forward to them any names for shut-in plants for the holidays.
Buildings and Grounds:
Mike Pitoniak reported the committee did not meet but mentioned their largest current project is the cell tower opportunity and they have been tasked with going forward with the process after the Special All-Church vote on 10/7/18. Mike has worked on the Memorial Garden (thank you!) and they are working on restoring our church’s sign on College Highway. Estimates are supposed to be in the works for the tree leaning over the parsonage garage.
Music:
Joe Sullivan reported 2 members present. The sanctuary piano will be tuned in October. They discussed updating the funeral fee schedule. The November Calendar Raffle sales are underway with the proceeds from this raffle to benefit the church’s general fund.

Finance:
Melanie Nitsch reported 2 members present along with Ted, Treasurer, Julie, Asst. Treasurer, Karen from Memorial Gifts, and Virgil, Stewardship. Welcome to new member Jim Putnam! After communication with Mass Dept. of Revenue, our church’s no-tax status will be automatically renewed in January 2019 and we should receive a letter late December 2018 stat-ing this. Spent a great deal of time reviewing the updated budget and ex-pense sheet provided by Ted. Discussed our annual Stewardship drive and letters will be going out in the first week of November. Virgil is heading this up. Discussion on the church’s annual dues payment to the Hampden Association and the necessity to trim our membership list so it is more ac-curate of our active members. Our Worker’s Compensation posting will be in the church office for church employees to see. Church employees are requested to contact Melanie Nitsch immediately if they have any on-the-job injury as a report needs to be filed with our carrier.
Memorial Gifts:
Karen Brzezinski reported she has set up a seven month CD from money in our savings account.
Christian Education:
Kristy Johnson reported and is filling in for Brittany Perras. The committee is working on the details for the annual Spaghetti Supper/Pumpkin Carving night on Oct 27
th. The youth of the church may possibly attend a play at
the South Congregational Church in Granby, CT, on 12/1/18. The Advent Workshop is set for 12/2/18. During the service on 12/16/18, the youth of the church will be doing a presentation.
Mission-Outreach:
Roxanne Cook reported that the Nehemiah House presentation went very well last Sunday. Mission-Outreach will be doing a collection for them dur-ing the holidays. They will also do the mitten tree and the sock box. Two military packages have been sent out. The Community Day and Vendor Fair on 9/15 brought in a profit of $600 and went very well. They will plan to hold this event again next year.
Pastoral Relations/Flower/Nominating/Fundraising/Library:
No reports this month.
NEW BUSINESS
Mike Pitoniak will take care of the tree issue at the parsonage along with trimming back all shrubs. No further business needed to be discussed so the Executive Committee was excused from meeting. The meeting was adjourned at 9:10 p.m.

"And God said, "Let the waters bring forth swarms of living
creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the firmament of
the heavens." So God created the great sea monsters and every liv-
ing creature that moves, with which the waters swarm, according
to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And
God saw that it was good. And God blessed them, saying, "Be
fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds
multiply on the earth." And there was evening and there was
morning, a fifth day." (Genesis 1:20-23 RSV). Nearly 400 different
kinds of birds can be found in the region of Israel, of which about
25 are found only in Israel. Birds are mentioned widely through-
out The Bible, with literal and metaphorical usage. Some of the
most common -
DOVES: Doves are harmless, peaceful birds which came to be used
as a symbol of The Holy Spirit: "And when Jesus was
baptized He went up immediately from the water, and
behold, the heavens were opened and He saw the Spirit
of God descending like a dove, and alighting on
Him" (Matthew 3:16 RSV).
CHICKENS: A hen with her eggs was used as a metaphor for God's
concern for His unrepentant people:
"O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, killing the prophets
and stoning those who are sent to you! How of-
ten would I have gathered your children togeth-
er as a hen gathers her brood under her wings,
and you would not!" (Matthew 23:37 RSV).
Roosters are known for their crowing, which was said to have been
so punctual that the Roman troops used it to signal the change of
the guard. Jesus Christ used the well-known sound of the cock
crowing to predict that Peter would temporarily deny even know-
ing Him on The Fateful Night: "Truly, I say to you, this very
night, before the cock crows twice, you will deny Me three
times." (Mark 14:29-30 RSV)

EAGLES: The eagle was the largest bird in Israel, with a wingspan of
up to 8 feet. God used an eagle metaphorically for His bringing the
Israelites out of slavery in the Exodus: "And Moses went up to God,
and The Lord called to him out of the mountain, say-
ing, "Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob, and
tell the people of Israel: "You have seen what I did to
the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles' wings
and brought you to Myself." (Exodus 19:3-4 RSV)
RAVENS: The raven was the first bird that Noah sent out from the
ark: "At the end of forty days Noah opened the window of the ark
which he had made, and sent forth a raven; and it went to and fro
until the waters were dried up from the earth." (Genesis 8:6-7 RSV)
PEACOCKS: Solomon is believed to have imported peacocks from
India and Sri Lanka for his palace.
HAWKS: Hawks are very fast-flying hunters, with sharp claws and
beaks. "Is it by your wisdom that the hawk soars, and spreads his
wings toward the south?" (Job 39:26 RSV)
OWLS: Owls are swift and silent night-time hunters of ro-
dents and small animals. The eerie sound of the owl's "hoot"
was used as a metaphor for loneliness: "I am like a vulture
of the wilderness, like an owl of the waste places; I lie
awake, I am like a lonely bird on the housetop." (Psalm
102:6-7 RSV)
QUAIL: Quail are ground-dwelling birds that were known
to migrate in vast numbers: "And there went forth a
wind from The Lord, and it brought quails from the sea,
and let them fall beside the camp, about a day's journey
on this side and a day's journey on the other side, round
about the camp, and about two cubits above the face of
the earth. And the people rose all that day, and all night,
and all the next day, and gathered the quails; he who gathered least
gathered ten homers; and they spread them out for themselves all
around the camp." (Numbers 11:31-32 RSV)
MANY OTHERS: Various Bible versions often translate the original
Scriptures differently e.g. one version may use "kite," while another
may use "falcon."
