Through education, we make it possible for students in Pikeville, in Paducah, in Hazard, in Morehead – literally any corner of the state and nation - to work with our nationally-ranked faculty to pursue their degree.

The fundamental purpose of the College of Health Sciences is to educate. We have a rich history of innovation and creativity in teaching and were among the first 12 schools of allied health in the nation. Since 1966, our faculty has proven themselves as leaders. They care deeply about the fields they study and the students they teach. Regardless of the discipline, our students are inspired to excel in their profession, practice, research and lives.

Education.

In 2008, 76% of undergraduates completed their degrees with honors.

Every day, great minds are working together to find innovative ways to improve our world.

Through research, we help those who have lost their voice regain it. We assist stroke patients in recovering mobility. We provide hope to the couple unable to have a child. Through research, we make a difference for humankind.

The College of Health Sciences is committed to building an internationally recognized research enterprise. The National Institutes for Health ranked the college in the top 20 research programs among schools of allied health in 2006 and 2007. Whether in the lab or the clinic, our researchers seek to directly benefit patients through their work. Every day, great minds are working together to find innovative ways to improve our world.

Through service, we create leaders who understand that giving back with their time, money and hearts is important.

Through service, we prepare our students to be leaders in a global society. They provide support to the mother of a sick child. They rejoice with the patient who receives much-needed medical attention and care. They open their eyes to alternatives in health care and they realize that they truly can have a voice.

Service, outreach and clinical opportunities at the College of Health Sciences extend far beyond the borders of our state. Our students impact the lives of others in countries such as Africa, Mexico, Australia, the United Kingdom, Ecuador and more. As a land-grant university, the University of Kentucky has service embedded in its mission. At the College of Health Sciences, we entrust our students with philanthropic experiences that not only make a difference in the lives of those they serve, but also in their own.

Through service, we create leaders who understand that giving back with their time, money and hearts is important.

Programs in the college provide service opportunities for students.

Invest in tomorrowEvery dollar given to the University of Kentucky College of Health Sciences matters. Together, our gifts magnify the difference we make today and the impact we have tomorrow.

The shortage of allied health care professionals is currently at a dramatic high. At the same time, a rise in tuition rates and cost of living expenses create obstacles for students desiring to obtain an education.

Our greatest need as a college is in provid- ing student scholarships. Less than 10% of the student body received scholarships from the college in 2007. Through your gift to a scholarship fund, you can play a vital role in assuring the continued success of our students, and, in turn, health sciences.

When you give back, you are helping meet the health care

“The scholarship I received helped bridge a gap for me when I felt completely overwhelmed and thought that perhaps graduate school was beyond my scope. I found it very encouraging to know that somebody, somewhere, wanted to provide an opportunity for students.

I am very grateful to the scholarship donors and I aspire to pass along the same spirit of hope and encouragement to whomever might need a boost.”

- Meredith White, Louisville, KY Master’s Student in Reproductive Laboratory Science

The challenges that our clinicians, researchers, educators and students face are different than ever before. The health care landscape continuously changes, yet we are committed to educating clinicians and leaders who are ready and willing to take on these challenges. We have faculty that inspire, students who are excited to discover, researchers fueled by passion and places that need the services we can provide. What we are missing is the financial resources to recruit leading

faculty, to fund student scholarships, to provide our researchers with the resources they need and to sponsor service learning experiences.

As the Dean of the College of Health Sciences, I know that making these dreams a reality is within reach. I ask you to consider making a gift that will support our dream for tomorrow and that will invest in a healthier future for all of us.

Warmest Wishes, Lori S. Gonzalez, Ph.D. Dean, College of Health Sciences
