HONOR CORDS

Undergraduates who are receiving their degrees today with Latin honors have the privilege of wearing special “honor cords.” The color of the cord indicates the level of the honor as follows:

Once students process and are seated inside the Dunkin’ Donuts Center, they are expected to stay in their seats through the entire ceremony. Students may meet their guests in the lobby or outside the building after the ceremony is completed.

Doctor of Humanities

First appointed assistant professor in the Rhode Island College Department of Nursing in 1975, Williams is one of the pioneers who created the nursing program at Rhode Island College.

In 1995 she ascended to tenured professor and in 2000 was appointed department chair. Seven years later, Williams was appointed founding dean of the college’s now School of Nursing. For more than four decades, Williams’ leadership and innovative spirit have guided RIC’s School of Nursing into becoming one of the most highly esteemed nursing schools in the nation.

Hospitals and health care programs around the state and beyond have also benefitted from Williams’ expertise and knowledge. She currently serves as a member of the Lifespan Board of Directors, the Rhode Island Nurses Institute Middle College Board of Directors and the Advisory Board of the Primary Care-Population Medicine program at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. She is a former member of the board of trustees for Rhode Island Hospital and the Assessment Technologies Institute Inc. Advisory Board, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, the Grassroots Liaison, the Rhode Island Area Health Education Center and the Health Partnership Council.

Williams received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Michigan in 1966, a Master of Arts in education from New York University in 1968 and a Ph.D. in nursing from the University of Rhode Island in 1995.

A RIC alumnus and intercollegiate wrestler, Kirwan is intimately acquainted with today’s dynamic global work environment as a successful international business leader.

For more than 13 years Kirwan served as executive for the leading global retailer Gap Inc. In particular, he was president and chief executive officer of Gap Global from 2015-2018, and president of Gap Greater China from 2011-2014. In China he led Gap from its infancy to a robust business, opening stores for Gap, Gap Outlet and Old Navy as well as developing a thriving online business across mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Previous to his China assignment, Kirwan was senior vice president of stores and operations for Gap’s largest brand, Old Navy, from 2008-2011. He also served as senior vice president and general manager of Old Navy Canada from 2007-2008, and zone vice president of Old Navy from 2004-2006.

In addition to earning a Bachelor of Arts in communication from Rhode Island College in 1993, Kirwan completed a Master of Science degree from the University of Maryland in 2005.

Kirwan holds a passion for supporting the communities where he lives and does business, ardently supports employee volunteerism and is actively engaged with multiple nonprofit organizations.

As the leader of the newly established Division of Community, Equity and Diversity at Rhode Island College, Cano Morales is responsible for ensuring that the Rhode Island College campus community is engaged and working towards a more inclusive, diverse and equitable institution.

In previous positions as director of the Latino Policy Institute at Roger Williams University and associate vice president for grant programs for the Rhode Island Foundation, Cano Morales has led grant programs promoting children and families, and Hispanics in philanthropy.

Cano Morales has served on several state and nonprofit boards, including the University of Rhode Island Foundation, the Rhode Island Latino Political Action Committee, the International Charter School and the Rhode Island Board of Regents for Elementary and Secondary Education. Currently, she chairs the Central Falls School District Board of Trustees and is a seminar fellow for the Institute for Nonprofit Practice, which is affiliated with the Johnathan M. Tisch College of Civic Life at Tufts University.

Cano Morales earned a Bachelor of Science in human development, counseling and family studies from the University of Rhode Island and a Master of Social Work from Rhode Island College.

THE RHODE ISLAND COLLEGE SEALThe official Rhode Island College seal (adopted in 1960) incorporates the anchor, a symbol of hope and of the state of Rhode Island, with the founding of the institution in 1854. The seal was designed by Edith C. Becker, professor emerita of art, who adapted the central flame symbol from the Holbrook Murals in the foyer of Roberts Hall. The flame is used in the murals to depict the energy that has, over the ages, supported the development of all living things and has led civilization to its highest intellectual achievements. In like manner, the flame in the Rhode Island College seal stands for the life of the body and the life of the mind, symbolizing the human and intellectual goals and achievements of Rhode Island College.

THE DEL SESTO MACEAt the 1959 commencement exercises, the first held on the present Mount Pleasant campus, Governor Christopher Del Sesto presented to Rhode Island College a bronze replica of the statue of the Independent Man so that the college, which since 1898 had been located near the State House, might continue its tradition of holding commencements and other academic convocations in the presence of the Independent Man. The Del Sesto Mace, designed by the noted Rhode Island sculptor Aristide Cianfarani and crafted by the Gorham Company, has been in use since 1962 in all academic processions as a symbol of tradition and authority, as well as commitment to the search for truth, knowledge, beauty, values and learning.

THE PRESIDENTIAL MEDALLIONThe Presidential Medallion is a symbol of the office of the president. The medallion is appended to a chain that bears the names of the college and the chief executive officers who have led the institution. The medallion bears the names of all the presidents to date; as well as the previous names of the institution; The Rhode Island Normal School (1854-1920), Rhode Island College of Education (1920-1960) and Rhode Island College (1960-present).

ACADEMIC ATTIREThe caps, gowns and hoods worn at college and university functions date back to the Middle Ages. Monks and students used them to keep warm in medieval castles and halls of learning. This formal apparel now symbolizes scholarly achievement.

Baccalaureate gowns have a long, pleated front with shirring across the shoulders and back. The gowns are primarily distinguished by flowing sleeves, pointed at the fingertips, and may be worn either open or closed.

The master’s gown is worn open, and the sleeve is cut so that the forearm comes through a slit just above the elbow. The doctor’s gown has rounded sleeves and velvet panels around the neck and down the front of the gown, as well as three velvet bars on the sleeves. In recent years American uni-versities have followed the custom of European institutions of selecting doctoral gowns in the color of the university. Mortar boards or caps worn with baccalaureate and master’s gowns generally have black tassels. The tassel of the doctoral cap is usually made of gold bullion.

The hood gives color and real meaning to the academic costume. Its silk lining bears the colors of the institution conferring the degree. The hood is bordered with velvet of a prescribed width and color to indicate the field of learning to which the degree pertains.

COLLEGE COLORSRhode Island College’s colors are gold and white, taken from the Rhode Island state flag. In 1986 burgundy was added as an accent color.
