PRINCIPAL’S REPORT YEAR 7 MEET AND GREET:

This week Ms Zoe Ferrier organised a Meet and Greet afternoon tea for all Year 7 students and parents.

It was an opportunity to touch base with the teachers and have a look at some of the work the Year 7’s have completed. I was also keen to hear from the students how they felt about their transition to Year 7.

The results from those there were positive but remember the best way to ensure school remains a happy place is to communicate any concerns so that we can work together to resolve them.

EVERY DAY COUNTS—SCHOOL ATTENDANCE:

With the first term rapidly coming to an end it is time to assess your attendance. Was it as good as you want? What reasons do you have for not attending? What can you do if you are away?

We all want our students to get a great education, and the building blocks for a great education begin with students coming to school each and every day.

Missing school can have a major impact on a child’s future – a student missing one day a fortnight will miss four full weeks by the end of the year. By Year 10 they’ll have missed more than a year of school.

There is no safe number of days for missing school – each day a student misses, this puts them behind, and this can affect their educational outcomes.

Coming to school every day is vital, but if for any reason your child must miss school, there are things we can do together to ensure they don’t fall behind:

* Speak with your Year Level Coordinator and find out what work your child needs

to do to keep up;

* Remember, every day counts;

* If you’re having attendance issues with your child, please let the school know so we can

work together to get your child to school every day.

SCHOOL COUNCIL:

School Council plays a key role at KTHS and being a member is a rewarding and challenging experience.

The commitment is one day a month, every third Monday. This year we have a number of parent positions open for nomination. Please have a think about being a part of Council.

A nomination form is attached to the back page of our newsletter if you are interested or they can be

obtained from the General Office on the display desk. Alternatively you can contact me if you would like to discuss School Council.

Dean Rogers, Principal.

third or fourth Tuesday at 5pm. If you are interested in being on the Committee and taking an active part in

Congratulations to the wonderful team of swimmers that competed at the recent Swan Hill Division swimming sports on

Friday 24th February. KTHS finished a respectable 3rd after a close finish with Cohuna Sec. College through the relays.

The students named below have been successful in gaining selection in the next round of swimming

at the Loddon Mallee Regional event on Wednesday, 15th March.

YEAR 7 EVENING: It was pleasing to see our Yr 7 Parents/Guardians on Wednesday night at our ‘Year 7 Meet the Teachers Evening’.

It was an informal evening whereby students were able to introduce their current teachers. If any Parent/Guardian was unable

to attend and would like to meet any of the teachers, please feel free to contact the school on 5452 1062.

SUMMER SPORTS: A reminder to students the Summer Sports Carnival will be held next Thursday, 9th March.

Over the past week, students have been attending try-outs for a number of sports including basketball, cricket, volleyball, table tennis, lawn bowls and tennis. Students will be provided with permission forms early next week, once teams are finalised.

All students who are participating must:

- wear their Sports Uniform/Year 12 Maroon Polo

- Return their permission form and payment to the Hall on Thursday morning (please do not return earlier).

Payment to participate in the day is $10.00 per student, or $20.00 per family (if you have more than 3 family members).

If students are not participating in the Summer Sports Carnival, they are required to attend school as per normal.

Zoe Ferrier, Junior School Manager.

Interested Year 11 & 12 students are invited to participate in the Pathways Day. Numbers are limited so students need to return the slip to the box on the General Office display table, or hand to

Miss McClure or Mr Henry by the end of Mon. 27th March if they would like to attend.

Students are made aware of the various courses and pathway opportunities offered by each Institute while participating in fun, relative and hands on activities that reflect real classroom scenarios. The

bus and lunch is provided free for this event. The students have been given the forms today, so

please, complete the slip, return asap. If you would like to attend.

What is Anaphylaxis?

Anaphylaxis is a severe, rapidly

progressive allergic reaction that is potentially life threatening.

Although allergic reactions are

common in children, severe life threatening reactions are

uncommon and deaths are rare. Anaphylaxis is regarded as a

medical emergency.

What are the main causes?

Food allergies are the most common triggers for an anaphylactic reaction. 90% are caused by: Peanuts, Tree nuts (e.g. hazelnuts, cashews, almonds) Egg, Cow’s milk, Wheat, Soybean, and Fish and shellfish.

Other triggers include: Insect stings, particularly Bee stings, Medications, Latex and Anaesthesia.

KTHS has 2 students at risk of Anaphylaxis in the school— both to Bees.

Signs and symptoms of Anaphylaxis

The symptoms of a mild to moderate allergic reaction can include:

• swelling of the lips, face and eyes, hives or welts and/or

• abdominal pain and/or vomiting.

Symptoms of Anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction) can include:

• difficulty breathing or noisy breathing, swelling of the tongue

• swelling/tightness in the throat and difficulty talking and/or a hoarse voice

• wheezing or persistent coughing and/or loss of consciousness and/or collapse and

young children may appear pale and floppy.

How can anaphylaxis be treated?

Adrenaline given as an injection into the muscle of the outer mid-thigh is the most effective first aid

treatment for anaphylaxis. Children at risk of recurrent anaphylaxis are advised by their medical

practitioners to carry adrenaline in an auto-injector, e.g. EpiPen®, for administration in an emergency.

Anaphylaxis at school

When a child is at school and is at risk of anaphylaxis, parents must:

Inform school staff of the diagnosis and its cause and discuss prevention strategies.

Work with school staff to develop an Anaphylaxis Management Plan in consultation with the child’s medical practitioner and provide copies of an ASICA Action Plan.

Supply the student’s EpiPen® and ensure it has not expired.

Staff involved should:

Know the identity of students who are at risk of anaphylaxis and liase regularly with parents.

Follow information contained in the student’s Anaphylaxis Management Plan

Obtain training in how to recognise and respond to an anaphylactic reaction, including

administering an EpiPen®

Ensure the EpiPen® is stored correctly (at room temperature and away from light) in an unlocked,

easily accessible place and know where the EpiPen® is located (in the General Office)

• In the event of a reaction, follow the student’s ASCIA Action Plan and know how to give the EpiPen®

Cheers Meg, Paul & Michael.
