Student Leadership Day The elected SRC Representatives participated in an SRC Leadership Day on February 23 at The Refectory, Werribee Mansion. The Middle School Captains, College Vice Captains and College Captains also participated. The day presented a wonderful opportunity for these student leaders to get to know each other and more fully understand and appreciate their important roles in the College, whilst at the same time developing valuable leadership skills. Part of the day was dedicated to the SRC team discussing the issue of sustainability and building on the work that was done in this area in 2017. They also provided valuable feedback to our teachers about learning and teaching which will be shared over the next few weeks.

Started by the Suffragettes in the early 1900's, the first International Women's Day was celebrated in 1911. International Women's Day belongs to all communities everywhere - governments, companies, charities, educational institutions, networks, associations, the media and more. Whether through a global conference, community gathering, classroom lesson or dinner table conversation - everyone can play a purposeful part in pressing for gender parity. This Year, the theme of International Women’s Day is #PressForProgress, With the World Economic Forum's 2017 Global Gender Gap Report findings telling us that gender parity is over 200 years away - there has never been a more important time to keep motivated and #PressForProgress. And with global activism for women's equality fuelled by movements like #MeToo, #TimesUp and more - there is a strong global momentum striving for gender parity. How will you support this?

From the Business Manager Ms O’Neill Social Media We have great things happening at our school on a daily basis and it is important for us to share these good stories with others. As a result, we are now ramping up the use of Facebook and Instagram where we will regularly post photos of the various activities that our students and staff are involved in. Parents are reminded that the College operates in accordance with its Privacy Policy. From the Director of Catholic Identity Mrs Egan Servant Leadership Day On Friday February 16, both the Liturgy and Social Justice Captains attended Mass in the Chapel and were blessed and sent forth by Fr Jude to do good work. On this

day students were commissioned as the leaders of the Thomas Carr College Vinnies conference. Students also heard from a range of presenters about how they can make a difference. As leaders, they also began planning for the coming year and experienced training in their various roles. We look forward to seeing what they are able to achieve together this year. Please find below the Vinnies Conference pledge taken by all members. As a member of the Thomas Carr College Vinnies conference, I promise to make a difference in the world by;

Loving and Respecting myself

Caring for others in my school and community by being a friend to those who

are alone, in need or in trouble.

Contributing to the happiness of my family and friends through my help,

respect, consideration, joy and kindness.

Treating others, the way I would like them to treat me

Living out the gospel message through my words and actions

Making a positive difference in my world.

From the Head of Middle School Mr Wilkinson Year 7 Orientation Camp The Year 7s have had an amazing time on their Orientation Camps so far with only a small number of Homerooms left to attend. It is evident that the students have really enjoyed the various activities, especially the new Tree Top Adventure. The feedback from the staff at the Good Samaritan Campus and Homeroom teachers has been overwhelmingly positive. Below is a reflection from Janaiah Mider of 7 Green. “The thing I enjoyed most about Year 7 camp was the Tree Top Adventure because it was the most fun activity, and it gave me the opportunity to face a small fear of mine… heights! Another thing I enjoyed at camp was the team work activities because I got to learn more about my class mates, and it was very funny at times too. The biggest challenge I faced at camp was the tree top adventure activity because I was a little bit afraid of heights. But once I got the hang of it I completed all the obstacle courses, except for the last one, which was the highest. I overcame this challenge by believing in myself and when all my class mates cheered me on, that was really great. This activity and the whole camp experience really taught me that I can overcome anything if I put my mind to it and having friends and classmates to help was also important.

https://www.facebook.com/tcctarneit/

This is an experience not to be missed by all futureYear 7 students because you really get to know your classmates. You think you know them already, but by the end of camp you them really well, and camp was FUN!” Year 8 Shine Program The Semester 1 aspect of the Shine Program began on Monday February 26 with 2 Homerooms travelling to Ocean Grove to learn how to surf. The Shine program was an overwhelming success, allowing students to spend time with their peers, build relationships and engage in an activity that they otherwise would not have the opportunity to do. Thank you to the Homeroom teachers and staff volunteers who attended the program and a very special thankyou to Mr John Bassi and Mr Brad Gilham for all their hard work organising the program and making it such a fantastic experience. Be sure to read all about the surfing trips as the students reflect on them in the next issue of The Beacon.

Year 9 City Experience Year 9 City Experience City Experience allows students to study the cultural, historical and sporting aspects of the City of Melbourne. The program recognises students’ increasing independence and requires them to develop their own transport plans in order to complete the set activities for each day. A City Experience ‘passport’ has

questions, facts, maps and information on key locations that they will visit individually, with their small group and as a class. We look forward to the positive reflections from the Year 9’s completing their iD9 experiences. Stay tuned for the next edition!

From the Head of Senior School Mrs Knurek Pastoral Care Thomas Carr College places a strong emphasis on the individual student's development and growth as a person. Parents and students are encouraged to utilize the resources provided by the College for assistance and support in achieving shared objectives in both the academic and co-curricular life of the school. The College has three Student Counsellors who can assist students with problems that affect their study and/or of a personal nature. The Pastoral Care program is delivered by homeroom teachers and developed by the team of Year Level Co-ordinators and Heads of School and is based around several themes:

Healthy Relationships: Cyber, sexual harassment, child safety, workplace bullying, same sex relationships, annual safety survey, conflict resolution (restorative practices), social emotional intelligence, Harmony Day, National Sorry Day

Being Effective Learners: Time management/study skills/exam preparation)

Healthy Lifestyles: Safe partying, drugs, alcohol, smoking, mental health, physical health, Driver education

Resilience (stress management, loss & grief, child safety)

Pathways/Careers: Careers/subject selection/careers expos, leadership and opportunities to develop leadership skills)

A number of guest presenters adds to the strength of the program. In the Senior School, our Pastoral Care program has focused on Child Safety, with lessons looking at “What is Abuse?” and Identifying and Reporting Abuse. In Year 12, we have also discussed the impacts of abuse. In early March, Year 11 and 12 will focus on Healthy Relationships and in particular violence against women which remains an issue of great concern in Australian society, with too many violent deaths of women and children at the hands of family members in the past year. Year 11 Debutante Balls A number of Year 11 students have indicated they intend to participate in a Debutante Ball this year. While we acknowledge the importance of these occasions for students as a “coming of age” and a sign of developing maturity, we are concerned that it will interrupt their academic pursuits. Students are asked to register the date of their own debutante evening with the Year Level Co-ordinators, Ms Jessica Atwood and Mr Cameron Rowe. We therefore ask the parents to write or email me at the College in an official way and provide notice that they are being presented on this night e.g. a copy of the list of debutantes or something from the organiser. Once this is received, we will excuse your daughter from the College on this day. The normal College rules and expectations will apply, should we not receive this notification. Please note that this applies only to the girls being presented- not to students attending as guests on the night. We have been advised about the requirements/needs for the boys being presented and provided they bring a note from a parent, they will be dismissed at lunchtime. It is the responsibility of the student to advise their teachers prior to the event and to catch up on any missed work. This information has also been uploaded onto CareMonkey. Year 10 Work Experience: All Year 10 students are required to complete one week of work experience during the Assumption Term, from Monday July 16 2018 to Friday July 20 2018. The students have been provided with the Work Experience packs and preparation for Work Experience should be underway. The Work Experience Arrangement Form and the College Work Experience Form are due on Friday March 9 2018. Please contact the College Careers Department for further information.
