Dear Parents, Friends and Guardians COMING EVENTS Staff News Last week I mentioned that Colette Purcell was finishing up as one of our School Officers (Teacher Assistant) in our Learning Enhancement Centre as she was commencing a period of Maternity Leave followed by Long Service Leave. I am pleased to announce that Colette’s position has been filled by Monica Weatherall. Monica comes to us with a number of years of experience in similar roles in other Catholic schools. We welcome Monica to this role in our school and staff community. Yesterday I received notice from Celine Slaughter, one of Prep School Officers, that she would be resigning from her position as of next Friday, 16 March. Celine will be taking up a full time position as an Office Manager on the northern end of the Gold Coast in the near future following a period of training. Celine has been a member of our staff since 1999 when she first started as a Casual School Officer. From 2006 Celine worked in our library and our Learning Enhancement Centre and then in 2008 she took up her present position as a Prep School Officer. Our thanks goes to Celine for sharing her talents with us over the last 12 years. We wish her well as she takes on her new direction in her working life. This Friday is the last day in our Uniform Shop for Deb Rowlings who works as an Assistant to our Uniform Shop Co-Ordinator, Jenny Mellifont. Deb does an excellent job in this role and she will be back with us again later in the year as our peak uniform sales times come along. I would like to thank Deb for her time with us since last September. Art Show Meeting – 7 March Our next Art Show meeting is being held tonight at 6.00pm in the College Board Room. All parents are welcome to attend. We have already established a committee which has parents from both the Primary and the College. Our Co-Convenors are Pauline Cook and Carolyn Horricks and both of these women have an enormous wealth of knowledge on how our Art Show runs which puts us a long way along the road to a successful running of the Art Show for 2012. Our meeting should be finished by 7.00pm. March Parents’ and Friends’ Meeting – Monday, 12 March Our next P & F Meeting is being held next Monday evening at 7.00pm in the school Staff room. All parents are welcome to come along to our meeting which is usually finished by 8.30pm. Thanks to Sharon Our Tuckshop Convenor, Vicki Turner, has been away with an illness for the last few days. We have been fortunate to be able to have had one of our regular Tuckshop volunteer parents, Sharon Lally, who has taken over in Vicki’s absence. I would like to thank Sharon for this help at short notice. Thanks also to our other volunteer parents who have assisted Sharon during her time in the hot seat. Class Patron Parents 2012 We are pleased to be publishing the list of 60 volunteers who have offered to be Patron Parent for their child’s class. Some have undertaken this role in the past while others are new to the experience. We are most grateful to all of them for their participation in building community and encouraging networks of parents to grow and flourish. The role of Patron Parent is primarily a pastoral one – one of welcoming and fostering relationships on behalf of families. They make themselves available to answer simple queries about the school or point others in the direction of the person who can provide information. Many will organise family or parent gatherings during the coming months in order to provide opportunities for parents to get to know each other. Photos of the class Patron Parent/s will be displayed on each classroom door along with a more detailed explanation of the role. Please be in touch with the office if you would like to make contact with your Patron Parent. The initial gathering of Patron Parents is scheduled for Thursday 15 March at 9am in the staffroom.

As humans we share a common wish and right to be happy. It seems however, that from birth in today’s world, we are bombarded with ideas of how to become happy through the acquisition of material possessions. This exercise is expensive and often unsatisfying as it is both unreliable and temporary. True happiness is not expensive, very reliable and deeply satisfying. The deeper, mental contentment of true happiness can only be found within each of us. It is a very personal journey. Buddha advised his followers, “Set your heart on doing good. Do it over and over again, and you will be filled with joy.” Socrates and Plato concurred, teaching that the just man is a happy man. This wisdom still holds true today. A survey of 30 000 American hosueholds found that those who donated money, goods or services to charity were about 43 percent more likely to respond that they felt “very happy” than those who did not donate. Another study found that those who volunteered or gave were 68 percent less likely to have felt “hopeless” and 34 percent less likely to say that they felt “so sad that nothing could cheer them up”. Studies have also found a similar correlation between increased feelings of happiness and giving blood and that the effects are particularly marked in older people. (Singer, P: The Life You Can Save) Economists William Harbaugh and Daniel Burghart, together with psychologist Ulrich Mayr conducted studies on brain activity through magnetic resonance imaging. They found that the caudate, nucleus accumbens and insulae (the brain’s “reward centres”) became active when participants chose to give to a charity over keeping an allocated amount of money for themselves. Henry Spira (life campaigner for the downtrodden and alienated and also animal rights campaigner) perhaps summed this notion up in simple terms:

I guess basically one wants to feel that one’s life has amounted to more than just consuming products and generating garbage.

Particularly at this this time of our annual Caritas cam-paign which was our focus of this morning’s assembly our challenge is to truly consider the needs of others. In light of current research, the spin off may be that as well as benefitting those less fortunate, there may be an increase in our own sense of well-being and happiness. If the project was approached as a whole family unit, I wonder whether the result might be a greater sense of peace and harmony in the household. Perhaps it’s at least worth a try. Have a happy week! Annette O’Shea

Our Insights article for this week focuses on Facebook – “the most significant communication device since the telephone”. Denis Masseni (a Monash University/RMIT social media sessional lecturer) provides a few tips for us to consider. He acknowledges that it is difficult for parents to determine their role when kids use Facebook. He asserts that “Being their ‘friend’ is not the answer. Neither is letting kids do as they please online. Our kids need our sensibilities and wisdom as parents to help guide them in the social media world, and create a safe culture of use.” I trust that you will find his suggestions helpful. Best wishes for the week ahead Mary Sanders [email protected]

Parents as primary caregivers and at home educators have an important role to play in helping kidsnavigate the social media landscape.

With around 75% of 15 to 65 year olds using Facebook there must be some redeeming value. There are more Facebook users than there are taxpayers. Facebook is the most significantcommunication device since the telephone, so why the hysteria?

We digest our information via the media, which just loves a controversy. You’ll never see an article that reads, “Grandparents stay in touch on Facebook with travelling grandchildren” or “Teacher connects with old U.K colleagues after 20 years – found them on Facebook”.

Instead we see articles such as “Australia The World’s Facebook Bullying Capital” (news.com.au January 18). Yes, there are dangers but like the gun lobby’s catch cry “Guns don’t kill people, people kill people”, in the hands of the naïve or evil it can also be destructive. The interactive form of communication that is Facebook is so new. A culture of use is developing and kids are leading the way. The single biggest issue stemming from inappropriate use of Facebook is that kids don’t realise they’re now global publishers. And in this space there are rules and laws. However we are in an era where online law is lagging but it is quickly catching up. In the future highly inflammatory and derogatory publishing that some people engage in will be reigned in, but in the meantime, we need to help our kids.

Schools will need to play a big part in creating this new Facebook culture. It can start with schools getting their own Facebook pages. This will go a long way to setting a tone for proper use and allow schools to keep pace with this evolving landscape. Parents as primary caregivers and at home educators also have a role to play in helping kids navigate this new landscape.

Here are a few tips about how to guide kids through social media.

1. Teach appropriate languageKids need guidelines regarding the language they use online. Here’s a simple guide for kids of all ages: “Don’t use language online that you wouldn’t use in front of your grandmother”. Language does get bluer as kids get older but Facebook seems to have lowered this threshold dramatically. Talk to kids about the appropriateness of the language they use on Facebook.

2. Limit friend acceptances and limit exposure to strangersYoung people collect Facebook friends like swap cards, which is not good practice. Being indiscriminate as to whom they befriend leaves kids open to the potential of being targeted by undesirable adults. It is more appropriate that their Facebook friends mirror their ‘real’ life friends.

3. Photos can last foreverMore than 250 million photos are uploaded each day on Facebook, making sharing pictures the most popular activity. Some young people do place risqué pictures of themselves on Facebook. The central issue here involves the protection of the user’s reputation, which can be wrecked by one inappropriate photo spread around cyberspace via Facebook.

4. Time on Facebook – encourage moderate useWe want our children to have a balanced life with a variety of activities both indoors and outdoors. We also know that they need plenty of face-to-face interactions so they can maintain social connections. The addictive nature of social media means that some kids spend far too much time on Facebook. Late night log-ins on a school night are not in kids’ long term best interest and require parent discussion and negotiation to help kids find a balance.

It’s difficult as parents to work out our role when kids use Facebook. Being their ‘friend’ is not the answer. Neither is letting kids do as they please online. Our kids need our sensibilities and wisdom as parents to help guide them in the social media world, and create a safe culture of use.

Facebook - friend or foe it’s here to stay

There is a nothing more divisive for parents today than a discussion about Facebook. With close on 11 million Australians now using Facebook, it has a participation rate like no other product or service.
