School Updates
The day is here, tomorrow we will celebrate our Back to PHPS/1988 Capsule Reveal Day. At this time I must thank our wonderful committee. Mrs Worthington, Mr Swan, Mrs Phipps, Mrs Nicholls, Mrs Isedale and Mrs Appleby for the many weeks of planning and preparation they have put into arranging and organizing for tomorrow. Also to my staff who have all worked hard to prepare our students and school for tomorrow. We have an amazing team of teachers, administration staff and support staff at PHPS who work tirelessly for the students and community of our school! Our school students look forward to performing for you tomorrow for this special celebration. We hope you can join us. Some reminders for tomorrow. Firstly the driveway will be closed at 9.30 for the day. There will be no through traffic after this time. There is no parking on site tomorrow with the exception of our invited guests. School staff will be on hand to direct invited guests to their parking spots. We are expecting lots of visitors tomorrow, so, as advised previously, the drive though will be closed for afternoon pick up with the only exception being for the two afterschool buses. Can you help us? As advised last week, there will be an oval Working Bee this Saturday, to revitalize the school oval. Volunteers are needed at 10.00am.

Dear Parents,
For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Clarence Slockee and I know a little bit
about plants but I’m not big on lawns. Fortunately, I work at the Royal Botanic Garden
Sydney and my good friend and former colleague Martin Holmes spent a number of years as
head of turf culture at the gardens and knows a lot about turf and lawns. Martin has kindly
agreed to lend his expertise in the revitalisation and re-establishment of the oval at Pleasant
Heights Public School.
As a parent of students attending the school, I want our children to have a level, well grassed
oval for outdoor sports and recreation. The current issues of top soil loss, hard baked clay
subsoil and inadequate drainage can be overcome with adequate preparation. We are
currently arranging for work to rectify this situation on Saturday the 7th
of December 2013.
This is not ideal given students will still have two weeks till the end of term, it will however
allow 8 weeks for new turf and top dressing to establish ready for the 2014 school year.
I will be volunteering my time for the day to achieve a suitable outcome and I am hoping that
there are other parents willing to assist in what will be of great benefit to students well into
the future. The greater number of volunteers, the less time and effort required by the labour
force in attendance. I will be on site from 7.00am with machine operator and supervisor
(Martin Holmes) repairing Northern retaining wall, sub soil preparation, turf and sand/soil
delivery.
We estimate that volunteers will be needed from 10.00am (with shovels/steel rakes) to help
spread top dressing across the oval – the machine operator will then use a leveller to (you
guessed it) level the top dressing and prepare area for laying of turf.
This process should take between 2 and 4 hours should a volunteer pool of 20 be in
attendance; the sand/soil and pallets of turf will be strategically placed around the oval by the
machine operator to minimise the amount of shovelling required and we hope to finish
around the 2.00pm mark.
If you can’t spare 4 hours, we’ll take 2 or even 30 minutes as again greater numbers will
equal a lesser time frame; if you aren’t available on the 7th
, we will also need volunteers for a
watering roster during the holidays to ensure our hard work is not in vain.
If you can help in anyway please contact the school prior to Saturday the 7th
of December, or
contact Kerry Neubecker on 0407481516.
Kind Regards
Clarence Slockee
