Comfort Cross Country racers excel at Oktoberfest meet
Senior Adriana Leal attacks Karger Lane during the annual
Billy Nabours Oktoberfest Cross Country Meet. Leal, a State
Qualifier last year, is looking to help get the entire team to
State this year. (Photo by Kady Zunker
By Coach George Edwards
The morning after
Homecoming was still abuzz
with the energy of a 63-6
victory. The cheerleaders
were still there. Two senior
members of the Homecoming
court including the newly
crowned Homecoming Queen
were there. While the Bobcat
Football team is undefeated
and have their eyes set on a
State Playoff run, another
team also has their eyes set on
that prize. And two of them
have already made it to State.
With Coach Billy Nabours
toting the starter’s pistol for
his namesake meet and with
polka music wafting through
the air, the Deer XC team ran
the first major race of the
season. This season has been
a hodgepodge of races as the
State has adjusted and
readjusted the District Meet
schedule several times. The
schools of District 25-3A
decided to invite each other to
their home meets so this meet
and the Llano meet will be
something of a District
preview.
If the results are any
indication, the Deer have a
strong chance of advancing.
Bandera won the meet handily
as they owned three of the top
6 spots. District foe Lago
Vista placed two in the top
four as freshman Aly Wray
was 2nd overall with a time of
13:11. Caitlin Keeney took 4th
at 13:25. Comfort sophomore
Crystal Agredano, a State
Qualifier last year, was 6th
overall with a time of 13:42.
Junior Daniela Hernandez was
right behind her at 13:46.
Senior Adriana Leal, another
State Qualifier from 2019
placed 12th with a time of
13:59. But what makes the
Deer a strong contender to be
one of the two teams that
make it to Round Rock is their
quality depth. Steffi Drymala
and Leslie Perez-Villa were
24th and 25th respectively,
coming in at just over 15
minutes. Cross Country team
scoring is like golf, you want a
low cumulative total. The top
five Deer combined for 65
points, taking the 2nd place
team spot behind Bandera.
District Rival Lago Vista,
while they had two top
runners, had a combined score
of 86.
Blanco, another District rival
came in 5th as a team with 119
points. Llano and Ingram
were not in the top 6 teams.
The girls will look to add to
their success on tomorrow at
Llano.

Cats blast Bandera near sideline for a 74-yard
pitch-and-catch and a 28-6
lead.
Bandera went nowhere once
again and the Cats had the ball
again midway through the 2nd
quarter. After Neri raced 21
yards down to the Bandera 30,
Falcon found Herrera all alone
in the left corner of the end
zone for their third TD and a
35-6 halftime lead.
The Bulldogs started the
second half with a run for no
gain, a fumble which they
managed to recover, and a
David Ashcraft sack of
Moore. After the punt the
Cats marched down the field
and Falcon hit Herrera circling
out of the backfield for a 26-
yard TD pass, their fourth of
the game.
Down 42-6 and with their
passing game effectively shut
down due to immense
pressure, the Bandera offense
curled up into the fetal
position and ran power
running plays incessantly.
This tactic was nominally
effective until Moore tried to
throw the ball once again.
And once again he was chased
backwards 20 yards and then
driven into the turf by Tucker
Weyel, who collected 2.5
sacks on the night. After the
punt, Chris Rodriguez showed
Bandera what a running game
looks like as he took a handoff
to the right and cut back
against the grain and simply
outran the entirety of the
Bandera defense for an 86-
yard TD run, giving the Cats a
49-6 lead.
Moore was replaced by
Kenny Trevino late in the 3rd
quarter. Trevino was chased
to his left and the senior
heaved a throw toward his
brother Leo. But Junior
Cabral stepped in front of the
pass and made a leaping
interception.
Last year Bandera won on
the strength of a pair of seam
passes to their tight end. On
the first play of the 4th quarter,
Falcon found his tight end,
Tucker Weyel, once again on
a seam pass for a 39-yard TD
and a 56-6 lead. Bandera
went into a turtle-shell, run
out the clock mode but turned
the ball over on downs
halfway through the 4th.
Kristian Godinez came in as
QB and while the Cats were
ostensibly trying to run out the
clock, Godinez broke loose on
a busted play for a 40-yard TD
run. For Bandera, the clock
mercifully expired on a 63-6
Bobcat victory that left the
Homecoming crowd dancing
in the moonlight.
One would be hard-pressed
to come up with one Bobcat to
be player of the game. There
were many candidates. Oscar
Falcon hit 7 of 10 passes for
280 yards and 6 TDs. He also
nailed 9 of 9 PATs. Jose
Herrera was the Hill Country
Nation Player of the Game as
he caught 5 passes for 180
yards and 4 TDs. He also
rushed for 46 yards and
another TD. Tucker Weyel
introduced a whole new
element to the Bobcat passing
game by catching a pair of
long TDs from his TE
position. He also had 7
tackles and a team-high 2.5
sacks along with a blocked
extra point. And even Chris
Rodriguez’s “off-night” saw
him run for 125 yards
including an 86-yard TD
scamper. The Cats are now 5-
0, having won 13 of their last
14 games. They face their
toughest test yet tomorrow as
they host the undefeated
Hondo Owls.
Members of the Comfort Deer Volleyball team are shown celebrating a point. Even after 2 tough loses against Blanco and Ingram, their spirits are high. The Deer were back in action Tuesday in Austin against Idea Montopolis. The results of that match weren’t available when this paper went to print. (Photo by Kady Zunker)
