I t seems no time at all since I sat down to compile the last newsletter, but as the production of them depends on much co-operation and goodwill from various committee members, and a vital link has a holiday in the offing, 1 am starting earlier than anticipated. Big query - has anyone a redundant photocopier they would part with for a nominal sum?? If so, lease contact Bill Richards. First of all, a big "thank you" to all who turned up at Arbour Square on December 7th - i t was again a most enjoyable and successful evening - socially and financially - a profit of over £500 resulted! The Reunion coincided with the 'Big Blizzard' in the Midlands and North, and when I returned to my Northern outpost on the following Monday, there was neither telephone nor electricity - the former was restored that evening, but the latter not until Wednesday at 10.30 p.m. - my camping practice came in useful with candles for light and a Gaz stove for cooking - having an open fi re, I was much more f o r t u n a t e than many.

A happy and successful New Year t o you a l l ! I t seems no time a t a l l s ince I s a t down t o compile the l a s t newsle t ter , b u t as the production of them depends on much co-operation and goodwill from various committee members, and a v i t a l l ink has a holiday in the o f f ing , 1 am s t a r t i n g e a r l i e r than an t i c ipa ted . Gerry Calvert has now joined those of us enjoying a more le isured exis tence . He served Raines loya l ly and conscientious1y f o r 30 years , much of the time as Head of the Maths Department. According t o Paul Williams, he was remarkably accurate with a piece of chalk , and occasionally a blackboard rubber! A t h is Farewell Party in December, i t was good t o see former members of h i s department, Zippy Auerbach, Tom Bi l l ing ton , Tony Per re t t (with h i s wife, former Jodie O'Regan and t h e i r small daughter ) , former pupil S Tony Purves and Paul Martin, Martin Leonard and o ther former col leagues , Chri s t i ne Crump, Carol i ne Ha1 lahan, Peter Spil l e t t and A n n Lowes.

Z i ppy Auerbach's twins are now aged 5 , and d a i l y "get t ing worse" ; Tom Bil l ington l i v e s and works a t Reading and was due t o go ski - ing t h i s month - he hears from Mi s s Hoski ns (who l i v e s a t Camberley) and Ti na Pam. I heard from Roger Beck a t Christmas - remember the school ski t r i p t o Leutasch when hi S luggage got l o s t and donations of garments were we1 comed? - espec ia l ly Janet Leaves ' nightdress f o r Roger's wife! Two other Leutasch sk ie r s were a t the Reunion - Sharon Powell (Walsh) who now has 2 ch i ld ren , and Jane Thrale (Roberts) - they have become ski add ic t s .

Joanne Marshal1 i s in Mayehofen, t r a i n i n g as a ski i n s t r u c t o r , and Elizabeth Simpson i s a l s o in Austria working f o r Intasun. While Joanne was in England, she was working a t East London Stadium, where she had met Me1 odie Cargil l hurdling - she l i v e s a t Bow and i S doing P . E . a t Avery Hill College. Her s i s t e r Margo i s a t Music College.

A t the December 'Do' , Malcolm Pit-Keathley and Harvey Feldman met f o r t h e f i r s t time f o r over 35 years and, together with Norman Holland, t r i e d t o i d e n t i f y contemporaries on old school photos. Norman now has 3 grand-daughters, two of them in Austral i a .

Ted J a r v i s gave news of h is s i s t e r , a l so an O . R . , Doreen Steel - she l i v e s in Farnham, has 2 chi ldren and works part-time f o r t h e M.O.D.

Peter Lodenore works in the Education Department of Kent County Councf l , he1 ping Heads s o r t out l oca? management problems. Hi S bro ther David Lodemore i s enjoying l i f e in the U.S.A., in Boston - a l s o a keen s k i e r - he'd be del ighted t o have O.R. v i s i t o r s , so anyone planning a v i s i t , contact us and we ' l l p u t you in touch with Peter f o r more information.

Victor H i l l s , a f t e r h is years with ILEA, now works in the development o f f i c e of Tower Hamlets Education Department - apparently 4 new primary schools and 3 secondary schools a re being b u i l t and Vic decides on room s i zes.

Duncan Edmonston again made the journey from Aberdeen - I wonder i f he had any re turn journey t r ave l problems with t h e snow?

Remo Beschizza turned u p a f t e r hearing the advertisement on Capital Gold - he suggested colour-coded label S per decade t o make i t e a s i e r t o spot contemporaries.

Kathy For res t , contemporary of Lau rence Page and S teve Everton, at tends the Arbour Square building where she i s doing a B.Tec. in Performing Arts .

Pat Turner and Kay Stewart were in t h e g i r l s ' school before the Anal gamati on and brought photos i ncl udi ng Miss Mango1 d , Joy Turner, Eileen M u n n , Ann North, Hazel Gr i f f in (who died in ' 7 4 ) , and Margaret Rai nes whose chemi s t ry experiments a1 ways f ai l ed and who was renowned f o r saying "Can anyone t e l l me what should have happened?". Former pupils on the photos were Sandra Briden, Joan Cooper, Gi l l i an Armstrong, Val e r i e Woods, Margaret Gri f f i t h s , Vivienne Coleman, Doreen French and Kaye Prince who became a physio therapis t before marrying a farmer and havi ng 2 c hi l dren . All the Chappell family now l i v e in East Anglia, Barry and Geoff a r e both in Norwich, John i s Head of Class ics and a head of year a t a school in Kings Lynn.

Hilary Tear i s an i n t e r i o r des igner , and t h i s year was judging the Br i t i sh Junior Ice Skating Championships and has now been accepted on the In ternat ional Panel of Judges.

Gary Bird i s a newspaper t y p e s e t t e r . Andrew Cappaert i s in the Promotions Department of the 'Daily Mail ' . He i s a staunch member of the PLA rugby team - as a r e Cecil and Aaron Bartholomew, Robert Baker, Richard Mahoney and John Featherstone, John i s now studying Art , and h a d j u s t returned from a study t r i p t o Par is .

George Lewzey (1966-1973). Congratul a t i ons t o George who took par t i n t he New York marathon on 4th November 1990 and f in ished the course!

James Breeze (1981-1983) i s a Software Engineer f o r John Brown Engineering, s i n g l e and l i v i n g in Bethnal Green. He i S in touch with Barry and Steven Everton, Andrew Boylett and Laurence Page. James plays with a band - 'Small People Shout' - on keyboards and gu i t a r and i f anyone i S i n t e r e s t e d in joining , contact James.

All t h i S news was gleaned a t the Reunion! Sadly, one of our o ldes t members, Grace Woods, died l a s t October - she s t a r t e d a t Raines in 1911.

A t present Mrs. Anne Johnson i s ser ious ly i l l in Mile End Hospital , where she has been f o r some months - she has acute l i v e r f a i l u r e and b r i t t l e bone di sease.

Chri s t i ne Crump, member of the Geography Department (1969-75), married t o Ken ( s t i l l of the a11 -male History Department) with 2 sons. She i s responsible f o r Soci a1 and P o l i t i c a l Studies in an Adult Education I n s t i t u t e .

Terry Kavanagh (1978-84) i S a money broker in the City and i s " s t i l l avai lab1 e" ! He i s in contact with Geoffrey Chi lds who works in the City f o r B H A Bank.

Joy Kinsman (Cat l ing) (1957-63) has 2 sons, one who has graduated and married a Portuguese g i r l and the other i s s t i l l a t University. Joy i s a keep-fi t and swimming ins t ruc to r . She would love t o have news of Margaret F i sher , Lea Georgi ades , Nadi a Stepansky, Sandra Kanter or any o ther contemporari es .

Paul Reynolds has been converted t o a Life Member - congra tu la t ions! He l i v e s a t Kingston. Paul found a reference t o Raines in the "London Encycl opaedi a " , quote: -

"Ra ine 's Foundat ion School Arbour Square, E l . Mixed secondary school founded in 1719 by a local brewer, Henry Raine, ' i n g ra t i tude t o God', t o provide an education f o r 50 boys and 50 g i r l S . The or ig inal buildings were in what i s now Raine S t r e e t , and s t i l l stand. In 1885 new buildings were erected in Cannon S t r e e t Road, and in 1913 construct ion of a new school on the present Arbour Square s i t e began. In 1977 the school was amalgamated with S t . Jude ' s School, BETHNAL G R E E N , and became a comprehensive. The school s t i l l possesses the 18th-century motto-stone bearing t h e words, 'Come in and learn your duty t o God and Man', and the Charity Children s t a t u e t t e s from the or ig inal Raine S t r e e t building. In 1981 there were 900 pupils ."

G1 o r i a McEvoy (Babot) (1955-59) wr i tes :

"Does anyone e l s e remember paying 6d (2gp) t o have t h e i r name inscribed on a brick t o be used in a new building a t Raines in the s i x t i e s ? My husband, brother and myself d u t i f u l l y paid our money a t a school fGte but never heard any more about the building. Was i t j u s t a ploy t o get back some of the money Raines had undoubtedly invested i n t he th ree of us? Should we f i g h t f o r compensation? Can we ask f o r our bricks back?"

Gloria was disappointed t h a t the re were only t h r e e old c lassnates a t recent reunions. Does anyone remember Peter McEvoy (1957-62) or Gloria McEvoy (Babot) (1955-59) or Glor i a ' s brother Tony Babot (1958-62)? I f so , they would love t o hear from you. Peter was a keen member of the school rugby, c r i c k e t , boxing, basketbal l and swimming teams. He took u p f ly ing following an i n t e r e s t in hang-g1 iding and, a f t e r obtaining

He i s now Chief Flying Ins t ruc to r a t Andrewsfield and cur ren t ly f l i e s a Snowbird when not running h i s own woodworm and danpcoursing company. Gloria has been very a c t i v e . In addi t ion t o r a i s ing two children (Adam and Nina), she was on the local Cheshire Homes Committee, Chai rwoman of the local Conservative Ladies ' Sect ion , a Samaritan, in the W.R.V.S., did League of Friends canteen duty a t her local hospital and was Social Secretary of her local school PTA. The children a re now grown-up and Peter and Gloria a re now grandparents. Gloria wr i tes :-

"Those of you who remember my brother Tony Babot wil l be amazed a t the transformation. Gone i s the l i t t l e w i m p who was forever asking my m u m t o wr i t e notes about h is s inus condition so t h a t he could get out of games.

He i s now a 6 f t t a l l I s r a e l i paratrooper, and an extremely f i t 44-year o ld! He i s s t i l l an a r t i s t - (do you remember h i s pa in t ings o f f i c i a l l y h u n g a l l over the school whi ls t he was t h e r e ? ) (and probably a few unoff ic ia l ones in t h e boys' l a v a t o r i e s ! ). He i l l u s t r a t e s chi l d r e n ' s books, and pain ts murals, e t c . - in f a c t , anything he i s l i k e l y t o get paid f o r . He went t o l i v e in Is rae l a t the age of 18, married h is sergeant in the Army (she was a woman!) and has l ived in Jerusalem ever s ince . He has two ch i ld ren , a daughter, Honey, now 19 and a son, Itamar, aged 12. After he 'd l ived in Is rae l f o r a yea r , he had t o do h i s National Service and joined the paratroopers, running across the deser t with a 561 b pack on h i s back a s pa r t of h is t r a i n i n g . To anyone who knew him a t Raines, t h i s will seem amazing. When he had l o t s of homework, he even used t o t r y t o ge t me t o ca r ry h is satche! i f i t was heavy!".

Martyn Button (1968-75) has been married f o r 10 years and has 2 chi ldren and 2 c a t s . He achieved h i s Graduate Diploma in Quan t i ty Surveying studying on day re1 ease and he i s now Director of a building company in Sidcup.

J i l l i a n Camp (Seago) (1967-74) i s a t present on materni ty leave from her job as an In ternat ional Telephonist f o r B.T.

Deena Osborne (Gardi ne r ) ( l972-77), a1 ready mentioned, was i n the hostel l ing group in North Yorkshire which i ncl uded David Lodemore and Helen Kostis - and she almost ended her days in a s l ippe ry gorge near Goathl and !

Steve Everton (1978-85) graduated in Civil Engineering and worked f o r two years as a geo-technical engineer in Guildford, Reading and Amsterdam, before begi nning f u r t h e r s tudy a t Imperi a1 College where he plays rugby regular ly . He i s a l s o known t.0 blow a trumpet from time t o time.

Paul Wi l1 iams (1969-76) s tudied a t City of London Poly f o r h is B . A . , v i s i t e d the U.S.A., returned here and worked f o r h i s M.Sc. in t r anspor t engineering a t Newcastle Universi ty, before ge t t ing a job with B.T. , f i r s t in s a l e s and now as a Computer Programmer. He has been in touch with Chris gonovan, who i s s t i l l t r y i n g t o break i n t o the 'music bus iness ' . He met David Caine who works f o r 'Our Price Records' , and Diane Brown who t o l d him about Gill Dobson (1969-76) being the s i s t e r

of Anita Dobson (Angie in Eastenders). Pau l ' s contemporaries included John Newnan, Vernon Slominski, Michael Newrnan, Barbara Wilson, Lesley Marshal l , Debbie Cowans, Peter Ttoul i , Paul White, Antony Mu1 renan, Gary Bishop, Jimmy Adshead, David Caine and Andr6 Hardy. He a1 so remembers Loraine and Lesley Su te r , who a re cousins of I r i s Lyddon - I bel ieve both a re married.

David Hart (1960-65) i s House Services Manager fo r a Management Services f i rm in Portman Square.

Joy Turner, member of the English Department in the g i r l s ' school and f o r a shor t time a f t e r the amalgamation, enjoys her retirement in Exeter - I mentioned the g i r l s who were a t t h e Reunion and t h e i r f r i e n d s , and she sa id she had been doing her best t o p u t 16 year old faces t o names.

Susan Wyburn (Brahame), s i s t e r of Linda, d i d n ' t get t o the Reunion as her youngest chi ld was recovering from an ear operation.

Miss Joan Mangold (Headmistress of the g i r l S ' school ) was unable t o a t t end , as she flew t o Lanzarote the previous day with Mrs. Weingarten and her husband. Miss Mangold i s well . Mrs. Weingarten enjoys spending some of the winter months in warmer climes f o r heal th reasons.

We have made sure t h a t the AGM does not clash with t h e F.A. C u p Final t h i S year , so do tu rn u p - the AGM par t of the evening i S always very short and not boring and formal, but we a re always del ighted t o have new volunteers f o r the Committee - a t present Edna Howard, Sue Smith, Gi l l ian Putt ick and myself a re the minority female members - so - any keen 'Old Gir ls" come and join us - i t only involves about 6 meetings in the yea r , and i t has been very g ra t i fy ing t o have the increase in membership and upsurge of i n t e r e s t in the Association over the past few years - long may t h i s continue.
