Crompton InstrumentsBeginning with a variant of the Serrin arc lamp, CromptonInstruments has brought innovative products to market for over a century and Integra digital metering systems are just oneexample of how the technology is put to work.

The focus on measuring energy began with Colonel Crompton’spatenting the concept for a revolving energy counter and hissupport for a combined circuit that could measure both voltageand current. From this beginning, analogue instruments soonbecame Crompton Instruments’ primary product. By the 1970sthis product range had widened to include transducers, protectortrip relays and current transformers.

Progressive upgrading of discrete circuitry to micro-basedintegrated technology in the 1980s increased Crompton’scompetitive position in the marketplace. With thelaunch of the Integra 2000 digital metering system in1993, Crompton had its first digital metering system of what has since grown to become a completeproduct line.

Tyco Electronics has been able to retain in-housemanufacturing of its analogue instruments in the UK due to the focus on skilled assembly, value engineering and use of supporting Six Sigma processes.

Crompton Instruments branded products are usedthroughout the electrical energy circle, beginning with power generation and continuing to the finalconsumers of electrical power.

Crompton Instruments comprehensive measuring and controlsolutions are used by control solutions from Crompton are usedby power generators and panel builders and provide a costeffective way for panel builders to upgrade their existinganalogue equipment and an efficient alternative to multi-functionrelays. Integra Digital Metering Systems

Integra multi-function metering systems measure,display and communicate over 100 parameters,including true RMS and power quality data. Integrasystems are fully programmable via a simple menu-driven interface and can be integrated into energymanagement systems via external interface options.Options include pulsed, analogue and digital outputs, a choice of DIN, ANSI case styles and LED or LCD displays.

Integra and Paladin Transducers

Transducers measure, isolate and convert electricalparameters into industry standard dc output signals and broadcast the results via communication interfaceoptions such as RS232 and Modbus®. These vibration-resistant transducers protect against high voltage andoverload. Integra transducers offer up to four userprogrammable analogue outputs and measure up to 50electrical and power quality parameters. Paladin DIN railtransducers offer multiple analogue outputs from asingle housing and Class 0.5 or 0.2 measurement of upto seven electrical parameters.

Kilowatt Hour Energy Meters

Tyco Electronics under its Crompton Instrumentsbrand offers offers self-contained panels or DIN rail-mounted meters measure combined kWh orkVArh with pulsed or analogue output options andselectable CT and VT ratios, replacing the need forseparate rotating disc meters or instantaneouswattmeters. Micro-processor controlled circuitryprovides up to Class 1.0 accuracy. Outputs aredisplayed via electro-mechanical indicators, LCDcounters or other integral instantaneous indication options.

Protector Trip Relays

Trip relays continuously monitor and protect anyelectrical parameter within a set point limit. The rangeoffers both traditional and technologically advancedproducts, including single parameter units, earth leakageprotection, ground fault relays, vector shift and ROCOFand microprocessor system protection relays.

Meter Relays & Digital Indicators

Tyco Electronics under its Crompton Instruments brandoffers a comprehensive range of meter relays and digitalindicators for measuring, monitoring and control of anyelectrical or process parameter. Meter relays are idealfor process control and load shedding applications,combining an indicator with set points which operatealarm and control circuits when the signal deviates from set limits. This range includes digital and analogue meter relays, digital bar graph indicators and controllers. Instruments are designed for controlpanels and switchboards, monitoring systems, power generation and control applications.

Current Transformers

Complete range of transformers for reducing highprimary currents down to a consistent 5 or 1 ampsecondary current. Transformer options include mouldedcase width, busbar and aperture sizes tape wound,balanced and split cores, current ratings, and variousmounting options.

Analogue Instruments

Comprehensive range of analogue instruments formeasuring electrical and electronic parameters. Rangeincludes DIN instruments, ANSI switchboard meters,panel indicators, sealed and ruggedised instruments andcomplementary selector switches for line-to-line and line-to-neutral readings. Precision engineeredinstruments are robust in design, ensuring accuratemeasurement and display in the demand environments.All instruments are available in a range of styles, sizesand specifications to meet the specific industry needs.

Shunts

Shunts provides an accurate dc millivolt signal, exactlyproportional to the system current, to drive ammeterindicators, overload protection and control devices. Therange includes industrial, switchboard, DEF 66-13, DIN,base mounted, tag end, lightweight and panel metershunts which can be supplied in a variety of formats and configurations.

Generator Set Controllers

Generator-set control units provide integrated manage-ment of all combined heat and power, co-generation,diesel and gas engine generator applications. Unitsmonitor energy supply within pre-set limits, auto-matically starting generator motors and transferringloads between mains and generator as needed. Unitscan be programmed to monitor a variety of energyparameters directly through the instrument monitor or a remote PC.

Integra Digital Metering Systems

OperationThe multifunction Integra 1630 digital metering system offers uncomplicated operationand high accuracy measurement of three-phase voltage, current, frequency, Watts,VAr, VA, energy, power factor and total harmonic distortion measurement of bothphase and system, current and voltage.

Three-phase four-wire system line-to-line voltage measurements are often a vectorcalculation of the line-to-neutral voltage measurements. However Integra 1630 digitalmetering system includes true measurement of both line-to-neutral, and line-to-linemeasurements, ensuring accurate readings even with unusual wiring configurations(e.g. four-wire open delta). To suit the requirements of individual power monitoringapplications, the Integra 1630 digital metering system offers simple programming anddisplay via the menu driven interface. Alternatively, an optional Windows-basedsoftware package can be used for remote configuration and monitoring. Onceconfigured by either method, simultaneous monitoring of up to 60 electrical and powerquality variables can be communicated to building management systems via pulsed ordigital communication options.

If customer requirements extend beyond the original specified capabilities, thefunctionality of this innovative product is easily enhanced to meet new clientexpectations. Integra plug-in option modules allow cost effective upgrades with anycombination of pulsed and digital communication outputs. The option module isinterchangeable without recalibration.

AccuracyIntegra 1630 digital metering systems utilise true rms measurement techniques up tothe 31st harmonic. An exceptional tolerance to high harmonic frequencies is achievedfrom a robust frequency detection method which is able to detect the fundamentalfrequency on any phase. For safe maintenance, the system indicates CT current in theabsence of voltage signals.

System Input

Designed for all low, medium and high voltage switchgear and distribution systems,the Integra 1560 and 1580 digital metering systems offer programmable VT and CTratio capability. Direct connection up to 480V ac with 5A CT inputs is standard and 1ACT inputs are optional.

DIN Integra 1630 Series

Multifunction Integra 1630 digital metering systems provide high accuracy0.2% measurement, display and communication of all major electrical and power quality parameters including total harmonic distortion (THD)measurement up to the 31st harmonic. To suit user requirements the rangeincludes single-phase, three-phase three-wire and three-phase four-wirecapability, all selectable at the point of installation.

This DIN 96 panel mounted enclosure offers simple programming and displayof up to 35 electrical measurement parameters via a simple menu-driven userinterface on the front panel. Integra 1630 digital metering system benefitsfrom optional pulsed and digital communication outputs. This allows enhancedstatus information of up to 60 measured parameters to be communicated toSCADA, building management or other systems. Additionally, a simpleWindows-based software package is available to remotely configure theIntegra and display all 60 major electrical and power quality parameters.

The Integra digital metering systems are designed to suit any powermonitoring application. These multi-function products replace the needfor numerous single function instruments, providing significant costsavings and reduced wiring times for all new or retrofit projects.

The Integra 510 generator set integrated power metering unit providescost effective digital multifunction metering. Designed for continuoususe in harsh environmental conditions, the unit typically replaces three conventional ammeters, a voltmeter, a selector switch and a frequency meter.

Integra 510 digital metering system offers a simple two-button interfacefor the measurement of up to nine electrical parameters andprogramming of current transformer ratios up to 8000A. The highcontrast large character LCD display provides readings for current perphase and system average, voltage per phase and system average, andsystem frequency.

Integra and Paladin Transducers

Integra 1560 multi function transducers provide high accuracy <0.2%measurements and communicate up to 50 major electrical and powerquality parameters, including true RMS system values, power qualitydata and total harmonic distortion (THD) measurement up to the 31stharmonic. Transducers meet high technical specifications andincorporate pulsed, analogue and digital communication outputs.

Operation

The multi function Integra 1560 transducer offers uncomplicated operation and highaccuracy <0.2% measurement of three-phase voltage, current, frequency, watts, VAr,VA, energy, power factor and total harmonic distortion measurement of both phase andsystem, current and voltage. A simple WindowsTM based software package is providedto configure the transducer. Once configured, up to 50 electrical and power qualityvariables can be simultaneously input into building management systems via pulsed,analogue or digital communication options. Status may also be monitored via a PCthrough a software package.

Alternatively, an optional menu driven display unit can be used to configure and monitorup to 32 measured parameters including three-phase voltage and current and systemwatts, VAr, VA, power factor, energy and total harmonic distortion. The Integra Displayunit panel can be permanently mounted next to the transducer or simply connected attimes when configuration, adjustment and/or status information is required.

Accuracy

Integra transducers utilize true RMS measurement techniques up to the 31stharmonic, providing <0.2% accuracy. An exceptional tolerance to high harmonicfrequencies is achieved from the robust frequency detection method, which is able tolock the fundamental frequency onto any phase. High integrity measurements arepossible where the system approximates CT current in the absence of voltage signals.

Residual current devices are used to detect potentially dangerous earthfault currents before damage is caused. The 373-ELR earth leakageprotection relay allows the fault current to be continuously monitored andcompared with the user selectable leakage level. Should the leakageexceed this level, the relay will trip to indicate a fault condition. With avery fast response time of under 40ms, the supply can be disconnectedbefore serious damage can occur.
