FULL DAY IN MUMBAI Day 2

MUMBAI DABBAWALAS

It all started about 125 years back when a Parasi banker wanted to have home cooked food regularly in office and gave this responsibility to the first ever Dabbawala. Other people also liked the idea and the demand for Dabba delivery soared.

As the city grew, the demand for dabba delivery grew too. Our forefathers had the vision to create the Dabba coding system that’s going on strong even today.

The Coding system evolved through various stages with time. In the beginning it was simple colour coding. Now Mumbai is a widely spread metro with 3 local train routes. The coding has also evolved into alpha numeric characters.

Dabbawalas are mostly semi literate people of Warkari sect from rural Maharashtra. They feel a sense of pride that their work and dedication is appreciated world over. Eminent personalities like Prince Charles have visited us. Prince even invited them to his wedding.

If you ask who is the most famous Dabbawala in the world? None other then Richard Branson! He actually travelled with them like a Dabbawala and delivered a huge tiffin to his own employees at Virgin, Mumbai. Dabawallas are about 5000 in number and deliver approximately 200,000 tiffin boxes every day and are recognised as delivering 6 sigma level of accuracy in our dabba delivery. That means only 1 mistake in 6 million chances.

There are two options for the group.

Day 2

MUMBAI DABBAWALAS

Option 1: Mumbai Dabbawala: Magic Unfolds : Duration 1.5 hrs

Chances are slim that Mahadeo Havaji Bachche – founder of Dabbawala movement, would have figured out the number of zeroes in a billion but yet, the modern day representatives of the movement he spawned in the 1890s were at the Taj Mahal hotel in Mumbai, lecturing the board of directors of the $43-billion PepsiCo on how to achieve 99.99% accuracy while delivering 200,000 lunch boxes to the city's office goers every day.

We arrange the same presentation showcasing management lessons from Dabbawalas. It is insightful, humorous and entertaining as well. It’s not just a presentation but experience sharing, which touches everyone.

These Dabbawalas are also invited for international events, product launches, annual sales conferences, Vision and mission launches in organisations as well as for team building and other managerial development functions. It is an experience.

To share the management lessons that Dabbawalas have gained over more than 120 years.

To understand the logistics of Dabbawalas in delivering 2, 00,000 Dabbas(Lunch Boxes) daily within stipulated time.

To gain insight into the coding used by the Dabbawalas to ensure error free delivery.

To know the organizational hierarchy of Dabbawalas.

To understand what keeps Dabbawalas self-motivated and get going.

To understand how Dabbawalas deliver the highest level of performance like Six Sigma, and many other quality certificates & awards, even without proper education.

Day 2

MUMBAI DABBAWALAS

Option 1: Mumbai Dabbawala: Magic Unfolds : Duration 1.5 hrs

To motivate employees by showing that if uneducated Dabbawalas can work so great then why not our employees.

The presentation is humorous and everyone enjoys it – it’s not a presentation rather experience sharing.

Format Of The Presentation:

The presentation starts with an Audio Visual.

Then a Documentary film is aired which gives introduction of Dabbawalas.

After the airing of AV & Documentary a Dabbawala/Mukadam enters in the hall/auditorium/stage riding on the bicycle through the audience. (This is optional & depends on the availability of bicycle at the venue.)

This follows with a PPT – “The Magic of Dabbawalas Unfolds” which deals with the history, internal working, coding, logistics, organizational set and all other related topics to Dabbawalas. This presentation explains everything about Dabbawalas & their working. (This presentation takes about 45 minutes to 2 hour depending upon time at disposal.)

These Dabbawalas have been invited by IIT Bombay, Delhi, Kharagpur and almost all other IITs; Stanford University delegation to India, University Of Nebraska, Malaysian Airlines, Malaysia, CIMB, Malaysia, National Stock Exchange – Mumbai, Reserve Bank of India, Mahindra & Mahindra – Car Manufacturer, Sandoz Pharmaceuticals – Mumbai,Indian School of Business (ISB) – Hyderabad, GE Money Servicing – Hyderabad, Microsoft – Gurgoan, Genpact – Hyderabad, Community of Cooked Food – Italy, Accenture – Mumbai and several more.

After Lunch, proceed for the half day sightseeing tour of Mumbai visiting:-

Gateway of India – Mumbai’s famous monument; this is the starting point for most tourists who want to explore the city. It was built as a triumphal arch to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary, complete with four turrets and intricate latticework carved into the yellow basalt stone.

Prince of Wales Museum – This beautiful gothic structure designed by Witet in the Indo Saracenic style, with its imposing dome in the 15/16th century Western Indian style – was built in 1905 to commemorate the first visit of George the V to India.

Dhobi Ghat – Dhob’s usually operate from door to door collecting dirty linen from households. After a day or two, they return the linen washed, sometimes starched and ironed. Dhobis were the forerunners on the Indian subcontinent to modern professional dry cleaners. Since the dhobi charges are much lower than those of dry cleaners, they are popular with most households.

Mani Bhaavan - is the Old Mumbai residence of Mahatma Gandhi. It’s a pretty, two – storied structure that now houses a reference library with over 2000 books, a photo exhibition of the Mahatma’s life, and well preserved memorabilia, including an old charkha or spinning wheel that Gandhiji used to use.

ecstatic, spiritual and entrancing, Sufi music acts as a uniquely valuable bridge between East and West, inspired by the works of Sufi poets.

Qawwali is the most well known form of Sufi music in India & Pakistan, and has been known to move the audiences to a state of emotional

rapture. With elements such as mystical poetry and powerful rhythm, the music of Qawwali fulfills a religious function; to arouse mystical love

and divine ecstasy, which is the core experience of Sufism.

Interspersed with the Qawwali recital, we will listen to a well-known Sufi scholar who will help us understand the basic concepts of Sufism. He

The origins of the Elephanta Caves have been debated time and again, though the sculptures and the art speak volumes about the time from when they could have been popular-6th or the 8th century. The island on which the caves are built was originally known as Gharapuri, and the Portuguese retitled it as Elephanta Island when they discovered a large stone structure of an Elephant on the island. The temple was primarily built for the worship of Lord Shiva and 'Shivaism'.

Once the works of The Great Eastern Mills, founded in 1839, this one space has been witness to some of India's most important moments. It saw the entire struggle for India's independence, its attainment, and its growth into one of the 21st century's most significant nations.

Today, its spaces are charged with an immutable history and contain within them an inevitable destiny.

At the Byculla premises, while the staccato rhythm of looms fusing warp with weft are only a distant memory, the chimney - that proud sentinel and iconic symbol of a veritable era - still stands tall, now serving as a unmistakable landmark.

In this activity, your teams will go through and experience every one of these. From the construction of a high quality human powered kart, to its branding, identifying the best racers, testing your vehicle on the custom designed track, qualifying in a high octane session to obtain pole position and then competing in a race. With mandatory driver changes at each pit stop, the activity transcends any individual’s ability and moves into teamwork, strategy, planning, and pit crew dynamics as well. Its a full on team activity for everyone.

FORMULA FUN RACING

Day 4

Activity: Outdoor Duration: 120-150 Minutes

Each team of 20 is given a Bollywood movie as the backdrop to their story and asked to present something modern using the actors from the famous movie. Each team will also be filming the movie on tablets provided to them with editing software - they will be taken through a short workshop on filming and editing skills for this. It is a very engaging activity, high energy and a lot of fun. To add more fun we may show them a Indian movie and tell them to identify some of the key characters in order to enjoy the activity and do full justice to it. Alternately we may also look into some famous English movies which this audience is likely to know - in which case we will need to procure a new set of props related to these movies. The activity kicks off with a big challenge: communicating a message on screen, in just 7 minutes. Working through the challenge requires teams to sit down and script, plan resources and locations, perfect the scenes and finally perform for the camera and deliver their masterpiece for the big screen. A small workshop on using the editing software on the tablets provided adds to the activity charm and ensures that teams churn out the best possible movies. Teams receive props and movie themes and a small workshop on make up kits and storyboarding techniques too.
