Have and practice a home escape plan. Draw only
the floors that people sleep on. Walls must be
straight and neat with doors and windows clearly
marked. All rooms must be labeled. Two colors ofarrows will help show the primary exit (the door)
and the secondary exit (the window) in the rooms.
Show the correct placement of all smoke alarms,
which are in all sleeping areas and in the hallways.
Also, be sure to designate a safe meeting place.

ChecklistChecklist Place smoke alarms in every sleeping area and on every floor in the
hall of your home.
Test the batteries in your smoke alarm once a week. Keep extra
batteries on hand and change them every six months. When the time
changes and you change your clock, change the batteries in your smok
alarm.
Place a fire extinguisher on every floor of your home and especially
n the kitchen.
Maintain a safe operating fireplace and chimney. Have them both
cleaned and inspected annually.
Remember space heaters need their space. Keep heaters at least thre
feet from all combustibles.
While cooking never leave food or grease unattended in the kitchen
Know how to call 9-1-1 and be able to the them your name, address
and what your emergency is
And the last step isto have and practice a home escape plan with a
designated meeting place. Make sure the whole family knows what to
n case of a fire.
