. InstallationIt’s important to pay some attention to the correct positioning of the instrument: · The EOS Colorimeter is designed for an ‘indoor’ operation on a desk, for this reason you should place it on a stable and flat table, at least cm ( inches) from any edges in order to prevent accidental falls; · Being an electronic device, it is also important to keep it away from water or from humid environments; · Protect your Colorimeter from direct sunlight and heat sources: it’s designed for internal use at room temperature; · The Colorimeter’s base is made from soft rubber.

. Safety instruction The Colorimeter is designed to ensure maximum safety. Nevertheless, for a safe use please follow these directions:

· Do not insert in the measuring dome any unsuitable object: it may scratch the special paint coating and damage the measuring disk (this may negatively affect the results); · Do not remove or disassemble the Colorimeter and any part of it: you may definitely damage it and its software; · Do not open or disassemble its touch screen: you may cause permanent damages in your EOS Diamond Colorimeter !

. Measuring dome: the sphereThe measuring dome is the Diamond Colorimeter core, it grades diamond colors with reliable accuracy simulating the human perception. EOS Diamond Colorimeter has high tech optical and mechanical features, therefore handle the instrument with care: dirt and grease may

jeopardize the grading accuracy!

Do not touch the inner surface of the measuring dome and keep the lid closed when you don’t use the tool.

Always use tweezers to insert and to remove a stone: scratches caused by dropping stones inside the dome may negatively affect the color grading measurements. Colored stains on the special coated inner surfaces can also waken the measurements.

Do not touch with your hands the measuring dome. Remove any dust inside of it with spray air.

DO NOT PUT PRESSURE ON THE DISK SUPPORT!

If the white coated surface of the measuring dome is damaged or scratched, the grading accuracy may seriously be affected: please contact your GEMCHROM dealer!

. TheoryThis part describes the theory about diamond color grading, but it’s not required for a proper use of the device. You may skip it ant turn to chapter . First use.

. Diamond color gradingEOS Diamond Colorimeter is an high tech instrument for diamond color grading simulating human perception.

Most colorless diamonds present, even if imperceptibly, a second background color such as yellow, green, brown and gray; the stones with these color hues cannot be classified as fancy diamonds and belong anyway to ‘colorless’ or ‘near colorless’ or ‘faint’ stones that make up the scale from ‘D’ to ‘M’ and down to the ‘very light yellow’ and ‘light yellow’stones arriving until the letter ‘Z’. Only after this saturation (the ‘Z’ and up) in their second color diamonds can be called ‘fancy color’. The Fancy Color Diamonds occur naturally in all imaginable colors. The best diamond color is actually a diamond that lacks color: the less color, the higher value (the exception to this is fancy color diamonds, which lie outside of diamod color scale).

The color grade is based on the saturation of the color compared to diamond color scale (at present time there are different scales used by famous gemological institutes).

. Diamond color scale

Afterwards you find ‘> M’.

PLEASE NOTE: The scale begins with the letter ‘D’ representing colorless. The scale continues with increasing presence of color, light yellow or brown, to the letter Z. The scale is based on the Latin letters ranging from D (the purest colorless color) and as you go down up to Z the diamond gets a yellow ting. Although most of the diamonds can be graded with a certain methodology, for some of them it is particularly difficult to determine definitely the color degree: when a diamond has a color close to the limit between one letter and the next one, the analyst’s health state (it is sufficient a common cold) may jeopardize the classification; also a strong fluorescence leads to an erroneous classification because it makes a gem whiter in our eyes. In these cases this tool is very useful and versatile.

. Diamond typesAs classification there are diamond Types.

Type Ia This is by far the most common type. They contain nitrogen in aggregates - or large clusters - throughout the crystal lattice. When the nitrogen atoms occur in groups of three, these aggregates absorb wavelengths of visible light on the blue end of the spectrum. As a result, the light that is reflected appears to be yellow. They can be colorless till yellow.

Type IbIf the nitrogen atoms are evenly spread out throughout the carbon lattice, then the diamond is said to be a Type Ib diamond. These diamonds absorb green light as well as blue light, and have a darker color than type Ia diamonds. Depending on the precise concentration and spread of the nitrogen atoms, these diamonds can appear deep yellow, orange, brown or greenish. Type Ib diamonds are much rarer than Ia. Type Ib and a part of Ia can be treated with HPHT process to ‘lose’ some of their color.

Type IIaThis type represents just percent of all diamonds. Type IIa diamonds are the most rare valuable. They are exceptional because they contain very little nitrogen or non at all within the crystal lattice, so they do not easily absorb short-wave light. Remain inert when exposed to UV light shortwave, they are excellent conductors of heat, but do not conduct electricity.

Type IIbThese diamonds are extremely rare, representing only . percent of diamonds… These stones contain a distinct difference from the other types: boron. The presence of this element not only makes these diamonds electrically conductive, but also gives most of them a bluish or bluish gray tint. When exposed to UV light shortwave they are phosphorescent.

. FluorescenceFluorescence is the property of some substances, such as diamonds, to emit visible light when exposed to UV light.

The fluorescent phenomena is complex to realize because a diamond appears whiter when exposed to sunlight than under incadescent light. This is because UV light (less than 380 nm in wavelength) contained in natural sunlight causes fluorescent diamonds to emit a visible light, a fluorescence, which is commonly blue in colour.

An intense blue fluorescence, however, can make it appear almost colorless a diamond that observed in the sunlight appears yellow; if a diamond has a too intense fluorescence will be nearly opaque (by a visual observation) which will adversely affect its value.

Many fluorescent lamps emit a small amount of UV, which can produce a similar effect.

As most of the visual diamond gradings are made using fluorescent lamps, the result for the fluorescent diamonds may vary with the characteristics of the lamp and by the proximity of the diamond with the lamp itself.

Therefore Fluorescence affects their visual value grading, making, in this case, the instrument very useful.
