HPHT treatment of diamonds first went public in 1999 and it has been a source of anxiety in the gem industry ever since. The most concerning area has become the increasing number of treated and CVD melee stones being sold in parcels with diamonds. Their small size indicates an increased need for testing of smaller diamonds, as well as the necessity for non-laboratory testing becoming available and affordable for gemologists as an additional line of defense for the consumer.

The Original Acid TestThe traditional “acid test” uses different acids to distinguish karat content. If the gold is the same karat or higher than the test acid, there will not be a reaction. WAY N E W E R N E R S AY S :“The FOREDOM BENCH LATHE is not designed to take the place of a big polishing motor, but it could. This little beauty gives the bench jeweler more control and the versatility to do a lot of finishing, sanding and grinding jobs.

I always suggest upgrading to the FS3340 kit. This gives you the option of removing the right hand spindle to attach a collet holder. By attaching the collet holder to the right side of the lathe you open up the possibility to accept 3/32, 1/8” and 1/4” shanks. The 3340 kit also has a wheel mandrel that is designed to hold an assortment of stone wheels for grinding.

The FS3375 Sanding Kit is a selection of drum and disk mandrels that work with 3Ms revolutionary Trizac sand paper. Trizac comes in 4 grits, 400,600,1200 and 2500 grit. The kit includes 4 drum mandrels in size 1”x1/2”, one for each grit. These mandrels are wonderful for doing the insides of rings, bracelets and any curved surface. The other attachments in this kit are the 2 3/4” disc mandrels that accept the 3’ PSA disks. These ‘stick on’ disks also come in 400,600,1200, and 2500 grit. They are great for lapping down the edges of rings, bracelets, and removing sprues from castings.

The second kit I developed is the FS3371 Polishing Kit. This kit utilizes 3” hard and soft buffs, 2 each for use with platinum blue and white polishing compound. Also in this 56 piece assortment are the amazing 3M radial bristol brushes in the 3” format. The radials come in grits ranging from 80grit -14000 grit. They are stacked 6 at a time onto wheel mandrels to be used on the left side of the BL lathe (with grey insert) or the right side of the lathe (black insert). Remember that these wheels are meant to spin in ONE direction only. Radial bristol brushes are wonderful for sanding, texturing and polishing just about anything including wood.

Some things to consider when choosing a steamer are capacity, pounds per square inch of pressure, auto shut off, water level viewing tube, plumbing hook up, warranty and footprint. Kassoy has a nice selection of steamers for every size shop and every job expectation.

If your looking for quiet, powerful and small....the NEW YORKER is for you (as if New York is quiet...)

Another option for large volume shops is the RELIABLE line of steam cleaners. With a lifetime warranty on the boiler tank, these units are designed to stand the test of time. The CL700A has a 2.37 gallon capacity and the CL800A can be hooked up to a direct water line. Both feature the new thermostat reset system, which automatically shuts off the heating element when the water level is low.

Reliable also offers 2 smaller units, the CL500A with a capacity of .66 gallons at 50PSI as well as the CL600A with a capacity of 1.25 gallons at 65 PSI. Both of these little devils have a fast heat up time of 10-15 minutes and an automatic shut off when water level is low.

A lot of people ask if their steamer needs to use distilled water, the answer is, “it can’t hurt”. People who live in areas where they have “hard water” should definitely use distilled water. Minerals can clog valves and rec havoc on boiler tanks, so when in doubt treat your steamer to some ‘soft water’....
