O Colorado College fair, We sing our praise to you;

Eternal as the Rockies,that form our western view;

Your loyal sons and daughterswill always grateful be;

The college dear to all our hearts is our C.C.

O Colorado College fair,Long may your fame be known;

May fortune smile upon you,and honor be your own;Our Alma Mater always,Your loyal children we;

Together let us face the future,Hail C.C.

O beautiful for spacious skies,For amber waves of grain,

For purple mountain majestiesAbove the fruited plain.

America! America!God shed His grace on thee,

And crown thy good with brotherhoodFrom sea to shining sea.

O beautiful for pilgrim feetWhose stern impassioned stressA thoroughfare for freedom beat

Across the wilderness.America! America!

God mend thine every flaw,Confirm thy soul in self-control,

Thy liberty in law.

In 1893, Katharine Lee Bates was a visiting professor of English literature in Colorado College’s Summer Session. Bates and a group of faculty members traveled by prairie wagon and mules to the summit of Pikes Peak.

There, inspired by the magnificent panorama, the poet conceived the initial verses of “America, the Beautiful.” It was published in 1895 to national acclaim.

Senior Class Gift Each year the graduating class chooses a senior gift to leave as part of its legacy to Colorado College. This year, the Class of

2015 chose to support mental health resources on campus by designating part of its gift to GROW in memory of friend and classmate Emily Spiegel ’15. Their gift also provides unrestricted support of CC through the Annual Fund. Through both of these commitments, gifts from the Class of 2015 will provide a lasting and wide range of support to different programs,

resources, and new developments on campus, ensuring a bright future for the next generation of Colorado College students.

Audience: Please join us in singing

WILLIAM “BRO” ADAMS ’72

Colorado College alumnus William “Bro” Adams became the 10th chair of the

National Endowment for the Humanities in 2014, nominated for this position

by President Barack Obama. The NEH is a U.S. government agency that supports

research, education, preservation, and public programs in the humanities. Adams is a

well-respected educator and advocate for the humanities. Earlier this year, under his

leadership, the NEH introduced a new initiative named “The Common Good: The

Humanities in the Public Square” to demonstrate the role of humanities scholarship

in public life.

Adams’ time at Colorado College was interrupted for three years when he left to serve

as a first lieutenant in the Vietnam War. This experience influenced his decision to

return to Colorado College, major in philosophy, and pursue a career in the humanities.

His commitment to higher education spans decades. From 2000 until 2014, Adams served as president of Colby College,

where he was recognized for leading its $376 million capital campaign, the largest higher education fundraising initiative

in Maine history. Through his role as senior president of the prestigious New England Small College Athletic Conference,

Adams was a strong advocate in the national conversation about the value of a liberal arts education.

He also served as president of Bucknell University from 1995-2000. Additionally, Adams has held appointments to teach

political philosophy at Santa Clara University in California and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He

went on to coordinate the Great Works in Western Culture program at Stanford University and to serve as vice president

and secretary of Wesleyan University. He is the author of numerous articles about philosophy and higher education.

Adams graduated magna cum laude from Colorado College with a philosophy degree in 1972 and conducted research

in Paris, France, as a Fulbright Scholar in 1977-1978. He received a doctoral degree in the History of Consciousness

Program at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Adams was recognized with an honorary degree by Colorado

College in 1996 and by Colby College in 2014.

Adams has served on the boards of Unitil Corporation, the Waterville Regional Arts and Community Center, and The

Maine Public Broadcasting Network.

A native of Birmingham, Michigan, Adams is married to Lauren Sterling and has a daughter and a stepson. His unique

nickname “Bro” was bestowed upon him by his late father in honor of a friend who died in World War II.

BRUCE McCAW ’68

BRUCE MCCAW’s commitment to service and helping others has been embodied

through his involvement in numerous organizations, including his role as vice

president of the Apex Foundation; as well as other leadership positions with the

Executive Committee of The Museum of Flight; the Board of Trustees of the Seattle

Opera; the Museum Board of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum; and

the Board of Directors of the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation. McCaw also

was co-founder of the Talaris Institute, a Seattle-based non-profit organization that

supports parents and caregivers who raise socially and emotionally healthy children.

McCaw’s generosity has been motivated by inspiring young people. Although his

philanthropy began before the birth of his three children — Skye, Winn, and Brys —

they have helped to crystalize his passion. His work in rebuilding the Seattle Opera House was completed in honor of

his mother, her love of opera, and her belief in the importance of culture to a community.

McCaw attended Colorado College for two years and has a strong affinity with the college. An accomplished

businessman, McCaw drew from his CC education to blaze trails in the business world. Following the death of his

father, J. Elroy McCaw, he left CC to focus on the family business. Along with his three brothers, McCaw worked to

aggressively expand their father’s cable television company, McCaw Communications. His late brother Keith McCaw

graduated from CC in 1976.

Along with his brothers, he built McCaw Communications into the 20th largest cable company in the country.

Operating in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska, they were attracted to the possibilities of wireless communications,

and the cable business became a platform to enter cellular communications. In 1994, they sold the company to AT&T,

and the company is now AT&T Wireless. Colorado College Board of Trustees Chair Eben Moulton ’68 refers to their

leadership in the cellular industry as “one of the great accomplishments there was.”

McCaw has demonstrated his entrepreneurial acumen through a variety of additional roles. He has held business

interests in a number of private companies within the cable television, cellular, broadcasting, aviation, and insurance

industries. He was co-founder and vice president of operations of Horizon Air, a former director of Alaska Air Group,

and chairman and founder of Forbes Westar, Inc. insurance. He was the CEO of PacWest Racing Group, served on the

board of Championship Auto Racing Teams, and co-founded and directed the Auto Research Center in Indianapolis,

Indiana.

In 2009, McCaw received the Woodrow Wilson Award for Corporate Citizenship. In 2004, he and his family were

recipients of the Seattle First Citizen Award for their community involvement and philanthropy. He received a

distinguished service award from Seattle’s Lakeside School, of which he is a graduate and a board member. In 2013,

he received the Pathfinder Award, which recognizes individuals with ties to the Pacific Northwest who have made

significant contributions to the development of the aerospace industry. In 2007, he was honored with the Stanley O.

McNaughton Champion of Freedom Award by the Washington Policy Center.

PAUL J. MORIN

PAUL J. MORIN, director of the Polar Geospatial Center at the University of

Minnesota is a digital cartography and 3-D visualization expert whose work

is emblematic of the spirit of innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurship that

accords with the aims of undergraduate education at Colorado College. Morin has

revolutionized the mapping of Earth’s polar regions by acquiring and processing high-

resolution satellite imagery that provides a crucial geospatial resource for scientific

research and monitoring of the Arctic and Antarctic. Since 2008, Morin has sponsored

and worked closely with eight Colorado College interns whose summer work aided

in this effort. For CC undergraduates, the access to costly, high resolution imagery

of Antarctica and training in specialized computation and analysis methods allowed

them to undertake original investigations of remote regions of Antarctica that are

inaccessible by any other means. The students presented their results at national and international conferences during

the past few years. These CC alumni now employ the advanced geospatial skills they acquired through work with

Morin to their academic and professional endeavors.

Morin is proficient in digital cartography and 3-D visualization and his work has contributed to educational programs

in universities, science museums, and undergraduate textbooks. He specializes in rendering of Earth datasets, such as

3-D convection of Earth’s interior, which are perceived by most as being too complex for non-specialists to understand.

He served as the visualization expert for the National Center for Earth-surface Dynamics, the University of Minnesota

Department of Geology and Geophysics, and the Minnesota Science Museum. His visualizations have been published

in Wired, National Geographic, and Nature. In his current role as director of the Polar Geospatial Center, Morin manages

sub-meter optical satellite imagery covering both of Earth’s poles for the National Science Foundation and NASA,

producing foundational geospatial products such as seamless imagery mosaics, high-resolution digital elevation models,

and geologic maps. In support of this effort, he wrote proposals and obtained federal grants totaling $15 million during

the past 10 years. The National Academy of Sciences appointed Morin to serve as the U.S. representative to the Standing

Committee on Antarctic Geographic Information under the Scientific Committee for Antarctic Research. Individual

recognition for Morin came from the National Association of Geology Teachers, which selected him as an NAGT

Distinguished Speaker in 2006-07.

COLORADO COLLEGE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

When a few brave and visionary men determined in 1874 to found a college in the shadow of the

Rocky Mountains, Colorado was not yet a state; in fact, it was little more than an inhospitable frontier. Nonetheless, on February 4, 1874, the Board of Trustees adopted a charter establishing “The Colorado College,” and stating that the board’s purpose was “to locate and maintain at Colorado Springs under Christian auspices an Institution of Learning on the college or university plan.”

The college officially began with 12 students and two instructors meeting in a three-room frame building in the 200 block of North Tejon Street. Student assemblies and daily prayer meetings were held in the Cumberland Presbyterian Church next door.

But the institution’s stability was far from assured. In fact, the college’s first president, the Reverend James G. Dougherty, said, “The trustees looked around for someone who had wit enough to see the fading possibilities of a college and not wit enough to perceive the great hindrances to success.”

In fact, the hindrances turned out to be considerable. When there was not enough money for the president’s salary, Dougherty resigned, and within weeks, a large party of Ute Indians, en route from their mountain reservation to a buffalo hunt, were encamped on the four-block square that had been set aside for the campus.

The setback, however, was only temporary. In 1876, Edward Payson Tenney was offered the presidency of the “suspended” college, on the condition that he be responsible for raising the money to cover all operational and instructional expenses of the institution and not “place trustees of the college under any financial obligation.” In his book on the history of the college, former Dean of Men J. Juan Reid writes that when Tenney received the invitation from the college to be its president, he retired “deep into the Cape Anne woodlands near his Massachusetts home to pray for divine guidance and specifically, that Henry Cutler, a well-to-do deacon of his church, might become the divine instrument for putting new life into Colorado College.” Apparently, Tenney’s prayers were answered because Cutler consulted with officials of the American College and Education Society, and he and four other Congregationalists from the Boston area agreed to finance the operational expenses of the college for one term on a trial basis.

In September 1876, the college reopened with 30 students and then embarked on a campaign to raise funds for the construction of a permanent college building. General William Jackson Palmer, founder of Colorado Springs and a trustee of the college, spoke at the groundbreaking for the new building on July 4, 1877.

“In breaking this ground,” he said, “let us set apart and forever devote it and the structure which is to rest upon it to the purposes of education, in the most unsectarian way, to the discovery and inculcation of the truth.”

From that day forward, the college had a permanent home. The building was dedicated at the college’s first Commencement on May 31, 1882. On that day, two graduates received their degrees, Parker Halleck and Fredrick Tuckerman, and they were both required to give orations to the assembled gathering. After they had finished speaking about civil service reform and “A Popular View of Philosophy,” President Tenney delivered a Commencement address that lasted an hour and 15 minutes.

Halcyon days followed. On April 12, 1883, in the first intercollegiate football game played west of the Mississippi, the college team defeated the team from the University of Denver 12–0. Following the game, DU accused the college of using “ringers,” and the college admitted that they had played five of the best players of the Crowell Hose Company, one of the local volunteer fire departments.

In the years that followed, the college continued to expand, and buildings of peachblow sandstone grew up and formed the quadrangle. The same clear vision that went into creating the college was evident again when it became necessary to preserve the campus. William F. Slocum, the college’s third president, refused to allow a local streetcar company to run its cars through the campus and insisted that the new science building be erected at the end of Tejon Street, blocking the way. When the City Council sided with Slocum, the owner of the streetcar company diverted what is said to have been “a substantial sum of money,” once intended for the college, to other far less worthy purposes.

The more than 2,000 students currently enrolled at Colorado College are taught by 180 distinguished faculty members. The college’s commitment to liberal arts and sciences education has remained steadfast since its founding in 1874, enhanced by a distinctive curriculum organization called the Block Plan. The college’s 13th president, Jill M. Tiefenthaler, presides over today’s ceremonies.
