Having inaugurated the BA cycle of studies in Applied Modern Languages at Lumina- The
University of South-East Europe, Bucharest, we announce the first edition of the Inter-
university Conference of Students in Humanities with the title
SOUTH-EASTERN EUROPEAN CULTURAL IDENTITY. AM I EUROPEAN ?
Since the dismantling of the Eastern Bloc composed of countries that were under the
domination of the Soviet Union at the end of the Second World War, cultural and political
divisions within the Old Continent have known a redistribution whose consequences have
been felt since the 1990s and especially since the expansion of the European Union in 2004
and then in 2007.
The war in the former Yugoslavia, the independence obtained by the countries of the Soviet
Union and the disappearance of the Commonwealth of Independent States, the diversity of
religions, all these trials at national and regional levels have contributed to the emergence of a
mixed area on the borders of Eastern Europe, the Mediterranean and the Middle East. The
South-Eastern Europe is now a transitional space that includes the Balkans, Turkey and
countries that are barely out of Russian influence, such as Bulgaria in the South, Moldova,
Ukraine, but also Poland, Slovakia and the Baltic countries in the West and in the North.
The purpose of this conference is to gather arguments and known or lived histories -from the
students- that argue for or against the existence of a European dominance in the multiple
linguistic areas of this region. Are and should we be Europeans? Is being European a forced
or a free choice? What are European values and standards and what should be kept and what
reconsidered? Is South-Eastern Europe a marginal space in relation to Europe, Asia or is it an
independent space in its own right?
Topics suggestions:
(Multi)-cultural South-Eastern European experiences
Cultural complexes
The European Union, agent of inclusion or exclusion in the South-Eastern Europe?
South-Eastern Europe seen from elsewhere by others
Economic models for South-Eastern Europe
Communism and capitalism in the Balkans
Being a student in South-Eastern Europe: advantages and disadvantages
Think for yourself: an imperative that must ignore local traditions?
Career choices in South-Eastern Europe
National languages, regional languages, international languages: what should we keep, what
should we discard ?
The nation or the region: which one to choose?
Conference location:
Lumina –The University of South-East Europe, Bucharest www.lumina.org
Date: 9 December 2013
Conference languages : English, French, Turkish, Romanian
APPEL A CONTRIBUTIONS
