The constitution of StudentGovernment is being reviewedand revisions of its structureare being discussed by theSGA Review Committee.Headed by Ann Babcock, '85President of SGA, this com-mittee consists of variousstudents each representing dif-ferent aspects of ConnecticutCollege. Together they are, asFernando Espuelas, '88 TheCollege Voice representativeof this group said," lookinginto ways of making studentgovernment more democraticand more efficient.""In the past several years,

there have been increasingcomplaints that SGA was inef-fective and inefficient," said-Babcock. The result of a re-cent survey designed by thecommittee "confirmed OUf

suspicions that most peoplecared but that there are alsoproblems with the means ofrepresentation." Espuelas

said, "All the structure ofSGA received a poor tomediocre rating fromstudents. In light of this we areproceeding with some fun-damental changes."Peter Steinfeld, '88 the

house President of Smith said,"There are a lot of kinks in thesystem that need to be ironedout. We are doing as much aswe can to benefit the campusas a whole."After examining II con-

stitutions from comparableschools and the question-naires, the committee hascome up with a proposal tochange the system of dormrepresentatives to one ofclass/region. are often in debt to the landowners and can not leave theirjobs until they have paid themoff, which usually never oc-curs. He showed one group ofslides of a highly guardedtown in the South in whichblack workers and theirfamilies were prevented fromleaving the town until they hadpaid off their loans.They lived in shacks in the

shadow of a white landowner's huge mansion, thesituation exactly replicated themaster-slave relationship of theConfederate South. Thismaster-slave relationship hasbeen internalized into the con-sciousness of both blacks andwhites and Holdt showsevidence of its destructivenessthrough racism in our society.lt became clear that this rela-tionship can only lead toviolence and hatred as Holdtdescribed a Florida town inwhich during his stay no even-ing passed when he did nothear gun fire in.the streets.In the second part Holdt

continued the presentation ashe examined the subtle racismencountered in the North andon the West Coast. In hisslides taken in New York one

faculty viewed the harshrealities of America's oppres-sion of minorities during themulti-media presentation of"American Pictures" onThursday evening, Feb. 14."American Pictures" was

presented in two partsseparated by a short break anddiscussion; altogether theevent lasted almost five hours.lt is composed of slides andnarration collected by JacobHoldt from over five years oftravel through the UnitedStates. A self described vaga-bound, Holdt arrived in thiscountry from Denmark' in1969 with only $40 in hispocket. During his stay hehitch-hiked extensivelythrough the Deep South, theSouthwest and the Northeast.He says he survived by stayingwith people he describes as"having a need to meet him."Holdt, a large man in his

mid to late thirties with long,flowing hair and a stringybraided beard, introduced thepresentation by speaking emo-tionally about the difficultieshe encountered during hisoften terrifying journey.He was arrested twice (once

by the F.B.I.), physically at-tacked numerous times (oncealmost beaten to death), shotat repeatedly and threatenedby many of this country's in-tolerable racist organizationssuch as the K.K.K. and TheAmerican Nazi Party. Whenhis journey was completed in19~4, twelve of the closestfriends he made in this countrywere dead.These facts did little to

prepare the audience for theevent which followed. In thefirst part, Holdt showedscenes of poor black farmersin the South and the overt

After nine years of anonymity, Connecticut College's "NewLibrary" has been named. The College Library announced itsdecision to name the library for former President Charles E.Shain whose presidency lasted for twelve years during theoftenturbulent years of 1962 to 1974.President Ames named the "many accomplishments of Presi-

dent Shain's administration" and "his outstanding leadership"as reason for the Trustees' decision. Former President Shaincommissioned the study for a new library, had architecturalplans prepared, and he with the Board of Trustees launched thefundraising campaign which raised nearly half of the funds forthe library by the summer of 1974. The library wa~ officiallyopened in 1976.Some of Shain's other accomplishments include the initiation

of Anthropology, Chinese and Dance and the Return to College -Program. He will be, however, perhaps best remembered for hisinnovation of coeducation at Conn. College in 1969.The Dedication Ceremony is planned for June I during Alum-

ni Reunion Weekend, and perhaps students will have nicknamedthe library by then.

Holdt used a dual pro-jection system accompaniedby his own narration, folk androck music mostly from blackmusicians and interviews con-ducted with the people he en-countered on his trip.The first part of the event

began dramatically as draw-ings of slave ships- and slaveauctions flashed on the screen.Holdt spoke with a 134 yearold man who remembered be-ing captured in Ai'rica when hewas twelve years old and ship-ped to the United States to besold as a slave.The terror of being taken

away from his family and soldwas still apparent in this man'strembling voice as he spokeabout his childhood. AlthoughHoldt, as a white person,found it difficult to gain thetrust of many of the blackfamilies, when he succeded hewas rewarded with strong lov-ing relationships.Most families he stayed with

lived in delapidated shackswhich did not differ muchfrom those in the poorest thirdworld nations. These shackswere often showed on thescreen in contrast to the lux-urious houses of the rich whitelandowners of the South. Theblacks in these areas are paid See American, page 5

King was a professor ofblack bistory at WittenburgUniversity and was the 1970recipient of the annual LouisBronlow Award, awarded bythe American League ofCities.

He is also the founder andpresident of the Urban CrisisCenter in Atlanta.

As King asserts, "The onlyway to understand oppressionis to live through it."

students will receive a "Sl.()(x)or $2,000" scholarship begin-ning next year as a result of a$50,000 endowment grant toConnecticut College fromPitney Bowes, Inc., accordingto Assoociate Director ofDevelopment Jennifer Sims.

Two minority students wholive in Connecticut wil be themost likely recipients of thescholarship, Sims said, but theaid would not be restricted toConnecticut residents.

The funds for the newscholarship will be the interestgathered from the school's in-vestment of Pitney Bowes'original $50,000 grant to thescbool.

Sims said the Pitney Bowesdonation was the result of ef-forts by alumni groups to raisemoney for minority scholar-ships at Conn.

Pitney Bowes notified Connat the end of January of its in-tent to donate to a minorityscholarship. This notification

About nine percent of Con-necticut College scholarshiprecipients are non-white, ac-cording to Marcia Gardiner,Director of Student FinancialAid.

Dean of AdmissiorisJeanette Hersey called the newscholarship "one more expres-sion of our interest in attrac-ting minority students," butshe added that financial aid atConn "does not favor onegroup over another, exceptpossibly favoring students inneed."

Winthrop Scholars Recognizedby Debby Carr

Thirteen members of theclass of 1985 were recentlydesignated as WinthropScholars, the highest academicdistinction offered by Connec-ticut College.

This award was establishedby the faculty of the college onMay 7, 1928 in recognition ofhigh scholarship and promise.

Winthrop scholars arerecognized for tbeir superiorscholarship in the first tbreeundergraduate years, and areaccorded early membership inthe local cbapter of Phi BetaKappa.

The 1985 recipients of thisdistinction are Ann Kizanis,Jill Tarbox, Mary Ann Gior-dano, Elizabeth Wreczorek,Laurel MacDuffie, DeborahWhipple, Suzanne Fox, Ed-ward Burger, Robert Buebler,James Baldwin, Patricia Clug-gish, Tina Libenson and Jen-nifer Roeckelein.

Two of these students wereavailable to comment on theirappointment to tbisprestigious honor.

Ann Kizanis is a math majorwho grades homework for themath department and works atthe math belp center.

She is presently consideringgraduate school, and shewould like a Ph.D. in pure

mathematics. Her involvementin the math help center hasstrengtbened her interest in theteaching field.

Ann, however, is not nar-rowing herself to onediscipline of math; she recent-ly became aware of many newpossibilities after attending ameeting which addressed thequestion, "What can you dowith a math major?"

Because Ann's home is inNorwich, this is her first yearliving on campus, and she en-joys it so much tbat she regretsnot having lived on campusearlier.

She feels that Conn's liberalarts requirements are itsstrongest attribute, because ithas "opened up new doors tonew things" that she may haveotherwise overlooked.

Sbe is enthusiastic aboutareas such as religion and arthistory, as well as matb.

Ann was surprised todiscover ber appointment tothe Winthrop scholars, as shewas unaware of the award.

A fellow math major, EdBurger was aware of the awardbut he was equally surprised tobe chosen. Ed is a math major,who, like Ann, praises tbequality and the "family-likeconcern" within the mathdepartment.

Although active in thenewspaper, radio station, andSpanish club during his firstthree years at Conn, Edpresently serves as a lab in-structor for Calculus classes.

He enjoys teaching becauseit allows him to interact withother people. Known for hissharp sense- of humor, Edstresses the importance of theability to communicate andsocialize with others, as thispursue a Ph.D. inmathematics, but his ultimateskill will eventually becomemore important than the abili-ty to study a text book.

He continues that oneshould balance his time inorder to have an enjoyable col-lege experience -- there shouldbe time for socializing as wellas studying: "you can't lockout the world around you."

She said the schoolwrote to various companies inHartfrd trying to set up a Con-necticut Business EndowedScholarship Fund but no Hart-ford companies were in-terested because of Conn'sdistance from the city.

BlausteinRenovations

by Sarah WebbThe Humanities have always been important at Connecticut

College for prospective students and undergraduates.With the completion of the new Blaustein Humanities Center

in Palmer Library. the college stresses its commitment to theHumanities at this school.On February 4 the long awaited renovations of Palmer

Library commenced. The target date for completion is. December I, 1985 so that the center will be operational by the se-cond semester. Chinese, Classics, English, French, German,History, Philosophy and Religious Studies will be taught in theBlaustein Center.Classes will no longer be heid in Thames whose future is un-

sure. Robert Hutton, Director of Operations, has high expecta-tions for the renovations.

"The classrooms for the Humanities will be centralized in onelocation and they will be more accessible to the handicapped."On the first floor there will be a language lab, faculty lounge anddining room. Audio visual storage will be moved from PhysicalPlant and additional computer facilities will be in the center.The second floor will have seven classrooms and five seminar

rooms. Thirty faculty offices will also be located on the thirdfloor. Skylights for the offices without windows will be install-ed. The entire project will cost about $4.3 million.The money was donated by friends of Connecticut College,

alumni, parents, corporate gifts and other foundation grants.The Jacob and Hilda Braunstein Foundation of Baltimore,Maryland contributed a substantial grant and the Kresge Foun-dation gave an additional $400,000.Turner Construction will be in charge of the renovations and

Graham Gund is the architect. To the casual observer therenovations will not be noticeable since the construction isprimarily internal.The surrounding landscaping will, however, be slightly

altered. Julie Quinn, Director of Public Information, stated thatthe ideas to utilize Palmer originated in the early seventies. Ideasincluded converting the library into a central dining area andbookstore or an administrative building.However, the school decided that a Humanities Center would

be more beneficial to the academic reputation of the school.The Blaustein Humanities Center in Palmer Library will be

the last major renovation in the next few years, but the ad-ministration has plans for possible improvements of the Crozier-Williams Student Center.

Candid CamelCompetition in a Social Vacuum

the campus. Before that, the social scene wasnot strained. Before that, there was no socialscene."It all happened suddenly," recalls '71

graduate Martha Stokes "One day it suddenlyoccurred to my friend and me, 'Hey! There's aguy! Let's go out with him.' " But almost assoon as the dating began, there appeared thecompetition.

New London, being a place where people liv-ed, had homes. And homes, being places wherepeople didn't like cold floors, had rugs. Andrugs, being big, cumbersome things that col-lected a lot of dirt and grime, called for vacuumcleaners. And so, in the mid 60's, there was agreat influx of Hoover Vacuum Cleanersalesmen into the greater New London area.

"It was crazy," recalls Mrs. Allen Green-burg, a long time resident. "All of a suddenthere were all these guys from Hoover at mydoor. On a good day I'd have some twenty,thirty men trying to convince me I needed anupright."

"Some days," Mrs. Beverly Allenremembers, "the traffic would be horrendous.There'd be long lines out front. My sons set upa lemonade stand at the front step. They'd raisethe price on hotter days."When asked if she bought a Hoover, she ad-

mits, "A few. Three or four. Maybe six. Yougot to feel so guilty," she explains. _.

But with these salesmen came families ofsalesmen, and in these families were daughters.Or "Hoover daughters" or "Hoover girls" or"Hoovies." And the Hoovies were what con-cerned the girls back on campus.I'It was hopeless, "' mopes Elaine King. class

of '74. "Getting a date was impossible. All theguys were going out with the Hoovies.'

And it was true."AU of us," agrees Dirk Bardenheister.

"Everyone of us. AU 42 guys were datingHoovies. Always."When asked why, he shrugged his shoulders.

"/ don't remember, really. It was the thing todo. Saturday night, they'd always be at the par-ties. One of them might come over, ask you todance. You just had to say yes. They wereso ... " He couldn't find the word.

"They were unlady-like, ill-mannered," ex-plains Beatrice McCarthy, '76. "I couldn'tbelieve any woman could do some of the thingsthey did. One of them had the gall to ask myboyfriend out to dinner. He accepted." Intears, she adds, "I think they (the malestudents) felt forced to go with them. Theyfeared the Hoovies would beat them up.""They were always very kind and tender on a

date," argues Jim Borne, '74. "But Hooviesweren't like all the girls at school. They weredifferent, and it was relieving. It's nice, for achange, to go out with a girl who, for instance,slurps at the bottom of a milkshake. Real'oud. "

When asked what a typical date with aHoovie might have been, Jay Mooney pulledout his photo albums. "There were a lot ofHoovie functions during the year, and it was areal treat to be invited to one," he explains."Here I am with my date. Edna. This is herfather, and some of the Hoover executives. Younotice how casual they all were. We all tried todress down for the occassion. Except for theHoovie girls. everything was very casual."The Hoovies themselves wore pink dresses in

all the pictures."It was sort of a uniform for them, H

remarks Mark Weller, class of '73. "Hooviesalways wore pink."This statement, seemingly a generalization, is

a fact. It dates back to December of '69, when,in order to boast sales, The Hoover Corpora-tion suggested (and backed the suggestion withbenefits) that its employees and their familieswear official Hoover-marked shirts and blouseswhenever possible. The clothes, to match theinsignia at the time, were all pink. The ideadidn't really catch for the salesmen themselves,or for their sons. But the wives, and especiallythe Hoover Daughters, took hold of the promo-tional stunt, and turned it into a fad. Or at leastfor themselves. And the Hoovies, as a result,owned entire wardrobes of pink.

"You could always spot them at parties,"Edith Wopner remembers. "AJI of them stan-ding in a group, all dressed in pink. They justlooked out of place. And they were always soinformal, and slouched all the time. We alway~thought, 'Who'd want to date one of them?But the men always did. AJI of them. Always."But as we moved into the mid- and later-

70's, the social trends moved away from datingHoovies.And until a few years back, the women in

pink remained very lonely at campus parties.But things are changing again.And the comments of today's students sound

very familiar.Don Ellings, '85, has been seeing a Hoovie

for two years. They are engaged to be married.When asked about the social life on campus,

he replys, "Well, I don't think it's as bad assome people make it out to be. Of course, I waslucky. I found Steph. She's just right for me,because she's a Hoovie, and I like that. I'm notsure that Hoovies are right for all guys, but Isuppose since every last male on campus dates aHoovie, that might mean something."As for the recent increase in Hoovie

popularity, Ellings points to the '82 HollywoodHit, A Girlfriend And A Slouch, with DebraWinger as a Hoovie who, foolishly, falls for aWall Street executive, played by Woody Allen,

"And the scene," he elaborates, "where she.in a filthy, pink tee shirt and jeans, and her haira mess, barges into his office, punches hissecretary, lifts him out of his padded, vinalswivel, and carries him out. .. "

racism, the American system,and the individual's reactionto the oppressive system inconjunction with their socialeconomic status.

Our country developedaround the master-slave rela-tionship, a relationship whichnecessitates superior and in-ferior positions. Holdt main-tains that because slaves havealways existed in America, themaster-slave relationship hascultivated by the UnitedStates.

Our values, folkways andaltitudes are all instilled withthe fear that we will becomesomeone's "slave. JI Themaster-slave relationship isseen still existing slave camps.As individuals, we are terrifiedof feeling inadequate, poor,and inferior-undesir-able qualities which are tied tothe role of the "slave" withinsociety. The master, on theother hand, which is a role weaspire to, is assumed to beconsistently satisfied-secure.

At a gymnastic meet afriend saw a girl fall during herperformance. At first he feltsorry for her pain and her em-barrassment; however, oncehe was informed that she waswealthy he lost compassionand became almost hostiletowards her. What is wrongwith us .when we assume thatjust because someone hasmoney they are less human,more resilient, and immune toinstability?

The oppressive system pro-vides often inescapable socialroles, such as those of thewealthy heirs and the depen-dent generations in slavecamps. To climb out (up ordown-rich afraid to climbdown, poor afraid to climb

up) of one's assigned socialrole is to climb a ladderwithout rungs.

lt is a frightening experienceto emerge into a foreign statusbecause it is a position of in-stability and loneliness oftenshunned by present society'sstandards and labels. Any timea role is juggled or threatened,we are vulnerable.

In "American Pictures" awoman struggling to re-habilatate herself from aheroine addiction, relapsed in-to her former role, whichresulted in a six year jailsentence for armed robbery.Just when she was closest tochanging her status, she wasunable to improve her situa-tion; it seems she was afraid ofsuch a deviance.

This is a prime example ofthe power of our ingrainedmaster-slave relationshipwithin the United States.

Holdt was asked, in essence,"Weren't you scared to go in-to the issues and places youdid?" His answer was that hedid not think about his fear.To ignore fear is a new con-cept to us because so often weallow fear to inhibit and con-trol our actions; it is part ofour socialization process.Holdt was able to transcendfear because he was at a pointwhere he had nothing tolose-no aspirations tocrunch, no possessions tosteal, and no standards orlabels to erase.

Holdt transcended fear inorder to understand and ac-cept the humanity he saw, thusreaching the point where hedid not hate. He did not hatethe Ku Klux Klan, theRockefellers, or the Pabstfamily because he realized theywere reacting to the oppressivesystem; they were playing outthe master role.

Fear breeds ignorance, pre-judice, apathy, and distrust.Transcendence of that tradi-tional fear within the in-dividual is therefore the key tochanging our moral system.Children are not born know-

ing fear, but it is one of thefirst protective defenses. Theyare taught by parents andteachers: "Don't talk tostrangers." HOoD't open thedoor to anyone you don'tknow." Fear is a learnedresponse to the propect of los-

We began the process oftranscending our fear-torecognize the omniprescenceof the master-slave relation-ship and isolate its powerwithin the individual.

In order to reshape oursocialization system, we mustbegin at the elementary educa-tional level. (Holdt shows hispresentation in elementaryschools.) For us it is an entire-ly individual process en-couraged by education and ex-posure to the effects of ourharmful system. We all mustlearn most importantly that itis not just "me" in theworld-it is me and humanity.The individual is part ofhumanity and therefore re-sponsible in part for its well-being. Holdt through hispresentation asks one thing ofus, "Help us to become morehuman."

Holdt didnot offer any quick solutions.When one student asked whatwe could do about this situa-tion, he simply remarked-thatwe can only find a solution toracism through acknowledgingits existence and understan-ding why it occurs.

As Espuelas said,"It is very exciting for us tohave the opportunity to in-troduce wide ranging demo-cratic reforms. Holdtbecame so angry and depress-ed that he left the country andreturned to Denmark. He laterrealized that he had to leavebecause he was becoming in-fluenced by this country'sracism.As Holdt lived with poor

What Ever Happenedto Revolutions?

weekend enjoying my Wash-ington's Birthday respite fromwork when I decided to go tothe movies. My family and I,after a little consideration,opted for "The Killing Fields."All of us had heard good thingsabout it and we were glad wefinally had a chance to see it.We were not let down. It was

one of the most powerfulmovies I have ever seen.However, after viewing thefilm I felt a vague unease that Ijust could not pin down. Final-ly, at dinner I was able to figureout the source of my discom-fort. I looked about me andremembered that we werecelebrating the birthday of themilitary leader of our ownrevolution, George Washing-ton. Could he or his fellowrevolutionaries (Jefferson,Adams, Paine, etc.) have everunderstood thei r twentiethcentury counterparts?The French Revolution con-

jures up visions of guillotinesand bloodthirsty sans-culottes.Yet, the Terror of the Commit-tee of Public Safety with its20,000 victims from a popula-tion of 26 million was nothingcompared to the terror of theKhmer Rouge bloodbath (3million Cambodians-one-halfthe population!). Many who

have studied French historypoint to the flight of the nobili-ty to England.and other nationsas evidence of the ferocity ofthe (evolution. But accordingto Professor R.R. Palmer only 5persons out of every 1,000emigrated, and many of themlater returned.How does this compare to

the teaming refugee camps ofThailand, Pakistan, Somalia,Sudan, and other nations thatborder on "revolutionary"countries. Furthermore, thereis no record of torture ever be-ing employed in the Frenchrevolution. How many twen-tieth century revolutions canmake that claim?Looking at the movie I was

reminded of Haui, a countrywhere I lived for two months.The physical beauty of the twolands was different and yetsomehow there was a savagesimilarity. But what broughtHaiti to my mind was therevolution there. It was the on-ly successful slave revolt in thehistory of the world and yet itsbloodiness pales when it iscompared to the revolutions ofthe twentieth century.The black Haitians exercised

restraint despite the fad thatfully forty percent of the slaveshad been born in Africa and,unlike the United States, slavesin Haiti were worked to death

or brutally killed because itwas cheaper to replace themthan to break them in or breedthem. Amazingly the GeorgeWashington of the HaitainRevolution, Toussaint L'Ouver-ture, saved the life of his ownmaster and throughout his lifehe sent money to help hisformer owner. His was themethod of humanity and com-passion, not the modern daybullet in the back of the head.'But what self-proclaimedrevolutionary has the twentiethcentury brought to Haiti? PapaDoc Duvalier and his hen-chmen. Where Toussaintbrought freedom from slavery,Papa Doc brought the Ton-TonMacoute (the dreaded Haitiansecret police). Where Tous-saint pardoned those whowished to enslave him,Duval ier murdered all whomight potentially oppose him.Where Toussaint gave moneyand aid to his people, theDuvaliers rob Haiti of half of itsGross National Product eachyear.I say at this time of remem-

brance of the father of ourrevolution, give me GeorgeWashington over Pol Pot. Giveme the Committee of PublicSafety over the Khmer Rouge.But still my question remains

unanswered. What ever hap-pened to revolutions?

Editoriallast December, S.G.A. President Ann Babcock created the

S:G.A. Review Committee to "Institute any chan~~s that could bemade to increase the effectiveness of the S.G.A.In order to obtain input from the student body, the committee

formulated an evaluation questionnaire. It asked, among otherthings, how effective students perceived the S.G.A. to be. Notsurprisingly, SGA received mediocre to dismal ratings from thestudent body. [to obtain the full results of the evaluation see lastweeks issue of The College Voice, p. 2JThe results, however. should be a lesson. The students are

dissatisfied with their student government, but this lesson did not.in fact, go to waste. The committee responsibly sought to correctS.G.A.'s problems.The Committee proposes a series of intelligent alterations [see

page 1] to redesign S.G.A.-for the better. The proposal, if ap-proved' by the S.G.A. assembly, would increase. The effec-tiveness and democratize S.G.A.We applaud the committee for its actions. Finally our student

government is taking steps to reform itself in order to serve us, thestudents.Connecticut College deserves the best student government

possible. The S.G.A. review committee's proposals, if im-plemented. will make this ideal government a reality.

Unethically Legal':The Controversy Continues

Would that solu-tion have been as effective in putting the "fearof God" into the "thief" as the room is a clearindication that the "thief" as the room search?The speed with which the tap was returned afterthe searches is a clear indication that the "thief"felt detection was imminent. Does the authorpropose that the tap would have been returnedwithout a room search? I recognize that askingfor the beliefs of the author is anach ing aneditorial nature to the article but no other inter-pretation is possible.I would like to mention a final criticism. Why

did the author use the terms "hockeyplayer(s)/team" "approximately fifteen times inthe article and never referred to them asstudents?Are hockey players students? Do theyform a class/group unto themselves?Would theauthor have used the label "governmentmajors" if that was the only unifying identifica-tion? A bias indeed: One hopes the author willnot always slant "news stories" toward his ownpersonal prejudices and friendships.

Dear Editor:I would like to comment on your recent arti-

cle entitled "Unethically Legal" in the February12 issue of "The College Voice." The first pointthat comes to mind is whether the search wasunethical. The accused students and the rest ofthe student body do have a right to privacy. Cer-tainly, random room searches for stolen or il-legal items would not be acceptable ethical con-:duct. However there is a grey area over whatsort of "due process" should be followed. In myopinion, the actions preceding the searchesdiscussed constitutes "due process." Campussafety, the Housefellows and the Coordinator ofResidential Life all believed they were acting inthe best interests of the College Community andtook steps to ensure the maintenance of anorderly, safe environment. More formalguidelines might be established, yet it seemsthat this search with the evidence as presentedwas not "unethical." More over, it can simplybe termed necessary.What, if I may ask a question which will not

receive an appropriate answer, would theauthor propose to have done in an effort to

lunch with a student in Smith-Burdick, I discovered a splendidexpression of spring.There on the lawn before me were the essentials of a student's

room, complete with blue rug, easy chairs, bed with innocentblue and white cover, desk, bureau, neatly stacked milk casesfill-ed with clothes, refrigerator, television set, stereo, tape recorder,nest of dishes. Heavy Metal ReactionTo the Editor:As a fan of heavy metal music I took exception to the following

line from the article "Gothic Punk: Reaction" in the February 12,1985 issue of the Voice - "the vocalist belongs in a heavy metalgroup, but the band (especially the bassist) is pretty good."I do not understand why the author of the article feels a need to

insult an entire genre of music. Has he ever really listened to themusic of Led Zepplelin, Iron Maiden, Blue Oyster Cult, MichaelSchenker or Black Sabbath? These are just a few of the HeavyMetal bands that will be listened to long after the music theauthor reviews fades into anonymity.If the author provided any reasons why he thought Heavy

Metal vocalists were inferior to Punk vocalists then his statementwould be excusable. But he presupposes that his readers sharehis blind prejudice.

The High Price of LearningTo The Editor:After reading the comments of Mr. Milliken I spoke to a Ms. Bar-bara Miller-Heron, manager of the Skidmore Shop, the bookstoreon that campus. She has asked me to quote her:

"Students at Skidmore pay exactly the same price for textbooks that students of Connecticut College pay since bothbookshops us.ethe same system of pricing, a standard systemused by most colleges throughout the country. Neither schoolhas yet found it necessary to increase the list price due to highfreight costs as several schools have done."

May I add that Brown University started adding an additional 5%to the price of text discounted books several years ago while Yaleadded 25 to 50 cents to the price of each of their textbooks.UConn prices their books using the same system asConn Collegeand Skidmore but they increase the price of non-returnable textsto compensate for unsold books.

fluenced by the French NewWave, especiaUy Godard. Heuses the medium as a means ofexploring how to renovate asociety fatally unclear aboutits motives.

'Death By Hanging' wasbased on a true story of aKorean resident imprisonedfor the rape and murder oftwo Japanese girls. Oshima ex-plores the psychologicalmakeup of a Korean in Japanto find out why he wouldbecome a criminal.The movie begins with a

botched hanging of theprisoner by the authorities.The accused, called R, suffersamnesia because of it. Thepolice then attempt to re-enacthis crime and to explain what'Korean,' 'justice' and'murder' mean to the prisoner.thereby revealing their ownprejudices and the racism andinjustice inherent in their legalsystem.The film moves inter-

changeably on the levels offantasy, allegory and symbolin Oshima's psychic explora-tion of R's consciousness andcondemnation of Japan'streatment of Koreans. Hispolitical cinema assaults theinjustice of the Japanesesystem and the prejudices ofthe Japanese people towardsKoreans.But on a more general level,

Oshima is condemning all in-justices of State againstminorities and is accusing theaudience of complicity byaiding the State in its racistpolicies by remaining passiveto them.The all-time classic 'A Tale

of Two Cities' will be shownby the Film Society on Sun-day, Mar. 3 in Dana Hall at8:00. Directed by Jack Con-way in 1935, this is thedefinitve film version of theDickens classic.

A Soldier's Playby Popl; Khatathar;

The Negro Ensemble Company performedfor the college its award winning production ofCharles Fuller's "A Soldier's Play" onFebruary 20. In a week that brought us tbepowerful commentary of "AmericanPictures," this play once again confronted uswith the issue of racism in American society. Inaddition to the moral issues, the play's otherstrengths were its excellent script and highdramatic tension.The award-winning play was premiered by

the Negro Ensemble Company (NEC) in 1981to great aclaim. Charles Fuller, the playwright,has received a string of awards for this work,including the prestigious Pulitzer Prize. Recent-ly he adapted this script for the Academy-Award nominated movie, "A Soldier's Story."

Reaction to the play was mixed. Somethought it had an interesting idea, but for somereason felt something missing. They left notknowing what to make of it. Others enjoyed itimmensely and felt it deserved much of the ac-claim it has received.

I myself liked it very much. However thatmay be because I became more in tune with theunderlying concept by talking with members ofthe company about their interpretations.I'm also used to the restrictions that go along

with the theatre. For many who are part of theT. V. and movie generation, it can be difficultto sit back and look at an unchanging stage andtry to grasp the point of a play's rather artificialsetting.The plot is a simple one. It is set in the South

during World War II (1944). Sergeant Waters,a black drm master, was murdered outside hisbase. He was in charge of a black platoon in thesegregated arms services whose only tasks werealways petty and sometimes degrading. It wasinstantly assumed that the murderer was a localwhite racist, probably belonging to the Ku KluxKlan.Captain Davenport, a military attorney, is

sent south to find out the murderer's identity.To the amazement of the white commandingofficer, Captain Taylor, Davenport turns out tobe a coloured officer. Taylor is certain that ablack lawyer will never get a white man con-victed in such a town. He feels, "being incharge just doesn't look right on Negroes."

Davenport's fair and unbiased mind allowshim to look at the situation without the pre-judices of either a white or a black viewpoint.He is a black man living and succeeding 10 awhite man's world without conforming or los-ing sight of who he is.The murder, the victim's personality, and

relations in the platoon are all reconstructed us-ing a series of flashbacks which for the mostpart work well.We finally find out the identity of the

murderer. This is even more shocking anddistrupting than the murder itself, for the'murderer turns out to be one of the blacksoldiers.The more involved you become in the play,

the more it becomes apparent that the real issueisn't who killed Waters, but rather why. We areintroduced to racial problems that go beyondjust black/white prejudices.

Fuller doesn't have in mind a who-done-ittype play. Rather he wants to convey throughthe characters some of his views on racism andits causes. He does this by unraveling the com-plex personality of the victim, and othercharacters.

Both this play and "American Pictures"assert an important point. If blacks feel theycannot be proud of their heritage they may bedrawn to self-hatred and self-destruction.

Fuller sees currents of self-hatred or self-doubt in portions of black communities. In "ASoldier's Play" he suggests that as long as thisself-abasement and feeling of inferiority con-tinues, blacks can not reach their full potential.The opening scene shows a drunken Waters

shouting "They still hate you! They still hateyou," whilst "Tie a Yellow Ribbon" plays inthe background. Shots are fired, and he is kill-ed. These last words are crucial to the play'stheme. For he is talking of the whites he so triesto emulate.

Through his relationship with C.J. Memphis,one of the soldiers, he realizes that he is out ofplace in both black and white society. C.J. is asimple, sensitive and kind farm boy. Because ofhis forgiving nature and innocence, he is reme-nant of the Christ figure. It is he who says ofWaters, "Any man ain't sure where he belongsmust be in a whole latta pain."

C.J. is imprisoned because he inadvertentlytalked back to Waters. There he commitssuicide. This is the point of revelation for

The highlights of this movieare many, but at the top of thelist in Ronald Colman's por-trayal of the heroic wastrelSydney Carton. In a role thatcould have easily become apathetic character, Colmanmakes Carton's sacrifice a no-ble, believable and utterlymoving one. As a comic coun-terpoint is the wonderful EdnaMay Oliver as the fiercelyloyal Miss Pros.Other superb performances

include Basil Rathbone as theodious Marquis de St. Evre-monde, Blanche Yurka as thedisturbingly vengeful MadameDeFarge and Donald Woodsas Charles Darnay.Moreover, the producer

David O. Selznick (of 'Gonewith the Wind' fame) went toenormous lengths to achieveboth historical and literary ac-curacy. The sets are stupen-dous and the cast large. In thestorming of the Bastille scene,supposedly over 17,000 extraswere used.

In the end, this version of'A Tale of Two Cities.'although over 40 years old,stands the test of time and ismore than worth one's while:English majors, Dickenslovers and film buffs alike.Admission is $1.50.-----

was meant to be seen. For one thing, it's in the wrong place.And most of it is obscured from -the view anyway. Yet thebuilding which is named after a former art major turned donor,does have something quaint about it.By the time it was finished, nearly $4,000,000 had been spent

on it, and that was in 1969. Skidmore, Owings, and Myrrillv oneof the top New York architectural firms, had been paid agenerous amount to design the building. Their design wascentered around the concept that north light is the purest andmost artistically desirable light. It is for this reason that much ofthe northern facade is dominated by windows.Tbe design was approved but many people found its site ~b-

jectionable; for Cummings was originally was meant tobe at the end of tbe green, next to 1.A. This would totally blockthe view of the Sound, but would show off the entire building, aswell as capture the light. The campus swelled with protest andpetitions were circulated. Finally it was decided to change thesite.Cummings was then moved to its present site. No one seemed

to mind that when in this position much of the light into thestudios wasn't pure northern light, but second hand southernlight reflecting off Palmer auditorium. Thus the purpose of thehuge windows was defeated. They made the studios glary ratherthan well lit. Such large windows loose a lot of heat, thereforekeeping the building heated requires a great deal of fuel.

Senior Expressionistby Elizabeth Curran

At the end of Februarytheatre major Marleine Hof-mann's production of GeorgeKaiser's "One Day in Oc-tober" will be brought toPalmer stage. This is a playwhich came out of the lateryears of German expres-sionism. It has a small cast,featuring Sheila Davis, StevenTunnell, Eric Mathre, MarkFrattaroli, Stephanie Stoneand Elizabeth Breyer.The plot seems somewhat

strange at first glance. Ayoung woman (Davis) bears achild out of wedlock andclaims the father is a lieute-nant in the army. When thelieutenant (Tunnell) is broughtback to face the woman, it isrevealed that in the truth he isnot the father. And yet,somehow by the play's end,the lieutenant is convincedthat he is the child's father.

While talking withMarleine, she acknowledgedthat the play was a difficultone to explain. Furthermore,she said, expressionism is alittle-known genre that is, usually hard to stage.

Marleine, a senior, becameinterested in the style when shestudied avant-garde theatrewith Linda Herr last year. Shewas so intrigued, she made ex-pressionism the basis for hermajor thesis.Expressionsim evolved in

Germany in the early 20th cen-tury. The movement, whichwent beyond just drama, wasgreatly influenced by contem-poraries Freud and Jung. Itwas a highly stylized and sub-jective art form, which oftenused elements of distortionand seeming illogicality. Someof the later plays had largecasts and impractical set direc-tions, where, for example, abed had to be transformed in-to a tent right on stage. Intheory, this was revolutionary,in practice a set designer'snightmare. Thus may expres-sionistic plays were unweildyand difficult to translate ontostage.

What's more these plays arenot easy to direct. The directormust be sure exactly whoseviewpoint is being dramatized.Every director's interpreta-

tion, therefore, can drasticallyaffect the play's meaning.When asked how she dealswith these problems, Marleinereplied that, in fact, she hastaken a different approachfrom what Kaiser intendedand that Kaiser was "probablyrolling in his grave." Throughher different approach shewould like to achieve a morefarcical effect, because theplay has not aged well and shefears that if played straight,the play could lapse into self-parody.

Despite the apparent dif-ficulty of this project,Marleine was visibly en-thusiastic, often praising hercast and crew. She agreed thatthere had been a few problemsin conveying to the actors herintentions for the play. ~However, she felt they stemm-ed more from her inexperienceas a director than from the ac-tors' ability to understand theexpressionistic form. She con-sidered these problems to benegligible and temporary.She mentioned her all-

his realism attained an ex- ~traordinary dramatic degree of e:power.The use of simple, every day

people, their unidealizedfeatures, their sincerity, were anovelty for Italian art, par-ticularly in religious paintings.

Caravaggio was the firstpainter to depict things as theytruly were, to catch theiressence instead of merelyrepresenting them.Yet, the set up of the show

makes it somewhat difficult toperceive the importance of hislegacy, due to the fact thatboth his predecessors andfollowers have been placed atthe beginning of the show.The sensible thing to do

because of this would be towalk back and forth in the ex-hibit, something that would benecessary anyhow since it isimpossible to assimilate allthose masterpieces at once.

It would also have been agood idea to includesomething by Velasquez.

He was an artist who pickedup a great deal from Caravag-gio, but by adding his ownmark -- a more humanistic andsomewhat less dramatic ap-proach -- seemed to havebrought art to its apex.Nearly 400 years later,

Caravaggio's art and impactstill remain intact, eventhough poor conservation ofsome paintings, particularlythose from Italian museums,does not always do justice tothe artist.However, I strongly recom-

mend this exhibit to anyone in-terested, it alone is definitelyworth the trip to New York.

thing about a great exhibitionis to know how to come upwith something even greaterthe next time.The Van Gogh show was the

spectacular event you all knowabout. However. the new"big" show at the Metro-politan Museum of Art doesactually manage to surpass it,in quality if not in quantity,although probably not inpopularity -- MichelangeloMerisi da Car av a gg io(1571-1610) hardly being ahousehold name.First of all, the pamtmgs

here are far superior. Don'tforget the Aries years were byno means Van "Gogh's bestperiod.Also, Caravaggio is a great

innovator; the artist is usuallyreferred to as being thefounder of Baroque art -- abreath of fresh air in an epochfilled with more or less redun-dant mannerist art.The viewer here is struck by

the overwhelming poweremanating from these pain-tings.

Born and raised in NorthernItaly, the artist moved toRome in 1592 where he quick-ly developed his own style,reaching his maturity in theearly 1600's.The dramatic use of lights

and darks, the daring com-positions, the remarkablehandling of space, the ease atwhich people and objectsstand and interact spaciallymake Caravaggio one of thegreatest painters of all times.Towards his last few years,

Waters. He realizes that his pursuit of whiteideals and his dis tate for his black heritage hadonly alienated him from both sides.This play is meant to make the audience,

especially the blacks, re-evaluate their situa-tion. The only way forward is by knowingwhere you come from and being proud of it.The performance we saw managed to retain

some of the dynamic tension and character por-trayal the play potentially contains. However,no one actor was strong enough to totally grabour attention.

I could feel the power in characters such as

had known little about the work market forblack artists. The fact that I could only come upwith three major serious black actors says a lotabout their situation.There are a number of good black artists who

find it difficult to find outlets for their creativi-ty. Until now not many good roles were beingwritten in which it didn't matter that the colorof your skin was black. Fuller and others arebeginning to change things.

In 1966 Douglas Ward Turner wrote an arti-cle in the New York Times, highlighting theproblems that faced black artists. The Ford

Waters and Davenport. They were portrayedwell, but I felt there was something missing.Cedric Turner is effective as Ci J. His actingand singing made him quite authentic.Overall, the actors did manage to give the

play enough impetus to make it work. Ideallythere could have been more. Some of the roleswere quite stereotypical, but this was necessaryin order to put the play's point across.

"A Soldier's Play" seems to have beensomething of a god send to the NEC. The nonprofit making company has been on a tightbudget since its inception. The late 70's and ear-ly 80's were difficult for them. But the successof "A Soldier's Play" could help changethings. They still have jurisdiction over the playfor one more year and plan on touring it na-tionally and abroad.

Foundation contacted Turner. He was given agrant which helped start the Negro EnsembleCompany get started. Its aims were to giveblack artists the power to "promote andoversee their own destiny."Ten years has since passed and the NEC con-

tinues to be the only such organization. Thebarriers facing black artists will be totallydissolved one day, and the Negro EnsembleCompany will be remembered as a milestone inAmerican theatre. Then we can say. "Oh yeah,I saw them when I was at college."

past week posting a 153.1 win over Bridgewater State (146.25)on the 13th and a 150.8 mark in a tri-rneet with Div III M.l.T.(119.95) and Div I Harvard (54.75) on the 16th.

The Camels shattered more records in their meet withBridgewater. The overall team tally of 153.1 is the new teamrecord for home competition. Freshman Kim Ellsasser took all-around honors posting a new record of 32.65.

The rookie placed in every event scoring an 8.7 on the vault,the highest mark ever received by a Conn College gymnast.Ellsasser also captured first, second, third in the floor (8.35), bar(7.95) and beam (7.65) events.

Frosh Frederika Frey took second all-around honors with a31.2 and placed first and third on the beam and floor exerciserespectively, with an 8.05 and 8.1.

Laura Fefee took third in the bar event (7.8) while teammates'Caroline Sam sen and Maria Leet tied for second on the vaultwith an 8.1.In Saturday's tri-meet versus the Crimson and Engineers, the

Camels placed in all events but one. The all-around positionswere captured -by a freshmen trio: Ellsasser (32.25), Frey (30.5)and Fefee (29.2), while Leet followed in fourth with 27.4.

Ellsasser and Frey tied for first on the bars scoring 8.2's,followed by Fefee in second with a 7.9. Freshman Ellsasser tookfirst place finishes on the beam (7.6) and floor (8.05) while team-mate Frey was awarded third place finishes on the same events,(7.0 and 7.5).

Squash VictoryThe men's squash club redeemed itself in its second outing of theseason defeating the Wesleyan J. V. squad 9-0. RepresentingConn were Tim Richards, Nick Stark, Jim Sachs, Jon Nichols,Tod Oliva, Cushing Anderson, Charlie Kernan, Dan Craft andSprague Simonds.

The women's club played a combination of Wesleyan varsityand j.v. players, posting a 5-4 record overall. Arney Schenck lostto Wesleyan's #1 varsity player but defeated the team's #2starter.

Betsy Rider eliminated the Cardinals #5 and #3 varsitymembers, while Ripley Greppin beat their #6 varsity player.

Men's Hockey Winnersby Dan Collin

On Saturday, February 16,the Men's Ice Hockey teamsurprised everybody, winningtheir fourth in a row in a thrill-ing 5-4 upset of Divisionpowerhouse Iona,

In the Iona game, theCamels jumped ahead to a 2-0lead in the first period on goalsby Dave Talanian and TomScala before Iona scored withonly seconds remaining toenter the second period downonly 2-1.

In the second period CraigBower and Greg Bertschmannscored and the Camels carrieda surprising 4-2 lead into thethird and final session.

When Phil Mara flicked aloose puck behind the Ionagoalie the Camels had a threegoal lead which was reduced toonly one late in the game byIona, but the Camels, behindthe goal tending of Steve Bar-riere, held on to take a 5-4decision.

The Ion a victory was theCamels third of the week andfourth in a row. On Tuesday,February 12, Conn crushedWestern New England Col-lege, 9-2.

In that game the Camels put

forth one of their most domi-nant performances, control-ling the game from start tofinish. The nine goal outburstwas Conn's highest outputsince a 10-9 victory over St.Michael's last season.

Two days later the Camelstraveled to Bentley where theypicked up their third road vic-tory of the season with an easy6-2 win. The Camel's roadrecord was thus improved to3-6 with only one remainingroad game, against Trinity, onthe schedule before theE.C.A.C. playoffs in earlyMarch.

The four-game win streakwas achieved despite the in-juries to defensemen P.J.O'Sullivan and David Torreyand forward, Rick Olson, allof whom have played integralroles on the team earlier in theseason.

Of those three, only Torreyexpects to return before theend of the season.

The holes created by theabsence of the above injuredplayers were filled by a varietyof utility players who hadpreviously seen little ice timethis season.

Randy Berner, who leads theteam in plus-minus with a 10.5rating, has helped. The play oftri-captain Gaar Talanian, asalways, has been invaluabe tothe Camels.

On the power play theCamels moved their conver-sion percentage closer torepsectability with a 6 for 19stretch, making their percen-tage 16.7. On penalty killing,Conn continued their success,posting an 85.3"10 mark -- anexcellent percentage byanyone's standards.

The shorthanded success isattributable to the outstandingperformance of Mark Munroand Dave Talanian, theCamel's top penalty killers.

Women's Varsity Swim Team competed closelyagainst Wesleyan on Tuesday the 12th. Untilthe last relay, no one knew who would win.However, the Camels' victory in the relaybrought the final score to a 61-61 tie, indicatingthat there would be no winner at all.

Not only was this the first tie for the team,but it was also the most exciting meet. CoachCliff Larrabee confirmed this enthusiasm, byobserving that "the crowds were never silent."

Donna Peterson impressed the team and thecoach with her spirit and committment.Although injured in the previous meet, againstTrinity, she placed first in the 1000 yard freeand swam in the final deciding relay, althoughthe coach claimed that her arm was "hurtinglike crazy." Her time in the 1000 yds. free,II :50.69, not only qualified her for the NewEnglands, but also broke the second record.Donna, however, humbly commented in

Swim Team Tiesrespect to her effort, "It was really the wholeteam that did it."

Co-Captain, Margaret Dougan also broke arecord in the lOll yard free with a 1:07.03.

The team's season ended with a 7-3-1 record.However, ten of the Camels traveled to the NewEngland meet at S.M.U. this past weekend. place to go up and play at,"said coach Martin Schoepfer."It's a tiring five or six hourbus ride, and the fans up thereare tough, too. You have to goup there hoping for the best,but at the same time, you mustexpect the unexpected."Friday's 79-61 loss to Colby

was not exactly unexpected.However, the Camels hadbeen hoping to have a bettershowing. Colby, ranked firstin New England and second inthe nation among Division IIIschools, basically manhandledthe weaker Camel squad, win-ning by 18 points.Although the Colby offense'

was not, by any means spec-tacular, it proved to be farmore efficient than that of theCamel's; they shot 47"10 fromthe field as opposed to Conn'smiserable 34"10shooting.Conn actually took more

shots (70 to 68) but got few se-cond chances due to poor re-bounding. Led by first team
