History of College/ Salient Features along with Photographs and map of how to
reach:
The Konkan region is distinguished from the rest of the Maharashtra State by virtue of
its distinct agro-climatic conditions, soil type, topography, location, crops, cropping pattern,
land holdings and socio-economic conditions of the farmers.
The problems in agriculture and allied sectors are entirely different from other parts of
Maharashtra. Hence, Government of Maharashtra established Konkan Krishi Vidyapeeth on
18th
May, 1972 to impart education, conduct research on location specific problems and to
disseminate the improved technologies among the farming community. It was renamed as Dr.
Balasaheb Sawant Konkan Krishi Vidyapeeth, Dapoli on 12th
February, 2001.
Government of Maharashtra recognized the importance of horticulture crops in the
Indian economy and state in particular; since there was a need for quality human resource
development in this field, hence permitted Dr. Balasaheb Sawant Konkan Krishi Vidyapeeth,
Dapoli to start the degree programme in Horticulture at Mulde, Tal. Kudal, Dist. Sindhudurg
in the year 2012-13. The college is one of the premier institutes in the state for imparting
education, conduct the research and extension activities in horticulture.
The first Government College of Horticulture was started in the year 2012-13 at
Mulde, Tal. Kudal, in SindhudurgDistrict imparting education, conducting research and
extension of various technologies.
At college campus, since 1985, fresh water fisheries project was started to guide
farmers of Konkan region. Project mainly works to identify and conservation of suitable local
fish varieties, research on commercialization of these varieties by high-tech propagation
techniques and standardization of cultivation practices. Works on fish cultivation in
fishponds, cage system, and ornamental fish propagation has also started under this project.
About 50 farmers are trained under this project and they have started ornamental fish
production on commercial basis.
In 1988, Central Government subsidized All India Coordinated Research Project on
Oil palm was started on area of 35 acres and this is one of the successful project in Indian
West Coast. The project works on study of cultivation practices of oil palm, suitability of
environment, fertilizer and water management and intercropping with respect to Konkan
region. Farmers from Konkan region and from Western Maharashtra (Sangli and Kolhapur
Districts) are motivated for oil palm cultivation and some of them has established oil palm
orchards on commercial basis.
Weather based Agro Advisory Services are started in 1995 to record observations of
various weather parameters on daily basis. These observations are submitted to Indian
Meteorological Department and weekly Agro advisory bulletins based on weather forecast are
prepared and disseminated to progressive farmers, government officials and NGO’s in the
district for taking crop care. Many farmers are benefited by this Agro Advisory Services and
play an important role to increase farmers’ income and this is unique campus of the
University having such projects.
In Mulde, university’s research project started in the year 1985 as National
Agricultural Research Project. Mulde campus has 44.41 ha area and presently all these
projects are working under College of Horticulture.
College of Horticulture [B.Sc. Hort.] has four years (8 Semesters) degree programme
with intake capacity of 60 students per year. On college farm various fruit crops orchards are
establishede.g. Mango, Cashew, Coconut, Sapota, Aonla, Arecanut, Banana. A separate fruit
crop museum was erected. Besides, the College farm has intercrops like spices, condiments
and pineapple. For practical’s various farms are available on which students get knowledge
about various trials of fruit crops, flowers, aromatic, medicinal and plantation crops and
ornamental plants nursery. Students learn under trainings on propagation of various crops and
plants. The high quality grafts and seedlings are made available to farmers and they get
motivated for establishment of various orchards, which helps in enhancing their economical
conditions.
The Associate Dean is the administrative and academic head of the college.
For educational purpose highly qualified staff is recruited and high quality audio-
visual system, library comprising of academic and competitive books, internet facility,
