THIS IS COLGATE

The picturesque Colgate campus is located in Upstate New York at the northern end of the Chenango Valley in Madison County.

Colgate University began when “13 men with 13 dollars and 13 prayers” convened in 1819 in what was then the frontier settlement of Hamilton, New York, to found an educational society that chartered an institution of learning. For most of the 19th century, it was known as Madison University, because of its location in Madison County. In 1890, the university was renamed Colgate University to honor William Colgate, an early benefactor and longtime supporter.

The Community The picturesque 515-acre Colgate campus is located in the village of Hamilton, near the geographic heart of New York State at the northern end of the Chenango Valley. The village, founded in 1795 and incorporated in 1816, is named for Alexander Hamilton. The site of the village is on territory ceded by the Iroquois Indians to the State of New York following the American Revolution. Elisha Payne, who led the first settlers from New England, is remembered as the village’s founder. By the 1820s, the village was a thriving trading center for an extensive farming area. The Chenango Canal, completed in 1836, put the village on the water route between the Erie Canal at Utica and the Susquehanna River at Binghamton. The railroad, which replaced the canal in the 1870s, was supplanted by a highway in the 1940s. The major industry has been Colgate University, and Hamilton remains a small and essentially rural community, little

changed in size and character in the past century. The current population of the village is estimated to be between 2,500 (excluding Colgate students).

Personal Contact Many students comment that “Colgate is the right size.” It is an institution of approximately 2,800 undergraduates and 245 full-time faculty (average class size is 19 students; student-to-faculty ratio is 10:1). Colgate is slightly larger than most liberal arts colleges, which enables the university to offer more academic specialties and cross-disciplinary programs. While Colgate is small enough to ensure student access to research equipment and opportunities to work closely with faculty, it is large enough to support a broad range of

About Colgate Colgate ranks as the second-best liberal arts school with Division I athletics in the country and the 16th-best liberal arts school overall according to a recent study published in the U.S. News & World Report America’s Best Colleges 2007.

Rebecca S. ChoppUniversity President

Rebecca S. Chopp was named president of Colgate University on July 1, 2002. Colgate’s fifteenth president, she joined the college from Yale Divinity School, where she served as dean. Prior to joining the Yale Divinity School,

Chopp spent 15 years at Emory University where she held the positions of provost and executive vice president for academic affairs. She established herself as a well-known scholar of religion and American culture. Chopp also served as director of graduate studies for the Institute of Women’s Studies, dean of faculty and academic affairs at the Candler School and Charles Howard Candler Professor of Theology. While at Emory University, Chopp oversaw two colleges of liberal arts and seven professional schools and led strategic planning in areas such as teaching and research, international affairs, university/community relations, and information technology. More than 20 vice presidents, deans and vice provosts reported to Chopp, who established three priorities for their work together: strengthening the schools and establishing cross-disciplinary programs, identifying new intellectual initiatives, and identifying and supporting colleagues with leadership potential.

Chopp received her B.A. from Kansas Wesleyan University, her M.Div. from St. Paul School of Theology and her Ph.D. from the University of Chicago Divinity School. In recent years her research and publication has focused on changing structures and cultures of higher education, on the role of liberal arts in democratic society and on supporting faculty in teaching and research. Chopp has written numerous books and articles in the areas of women’s studies, Christian theology and the role of religion in American public life. Chopp has received the Alumna of the Year award from the University of Chicago Divinity School, an honorary doctorate in divinity from Lehigh University, the Alumni Achievement Award from Kansas Wesleyan University, the Distinguished Alumna Award from Saint Paul School of Theology and the Founder’s Day Award from Baker University. Chopp has been editor of The Quarterly Review, Religious Studies Review, and The Christian Century, and has been a member of the editorial boards of six other journals of religious and theological studies. She was president of the American Academy of Religion and chair of Women in Leadership in Theological Education of the Association of Theological Schools. Among her many memberships in community and professional groups and associations, she is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Carnegie Foundation and has served on the Council of Information and Library Resources. Chopp is married to Frederick H. Thibodeau. They have three sons.

Admission Profile(Class of 2010) Typically, Colgate enrolls approximately 730 first-year students from among more than 8,000 applicants.

Financial Aid Colgate provides financial assistance to outstanding students accepted for admission whose personal and family resources are inadequate to meet the costs of a Colgate education. More than 45 percent of entering Colgate students receive some sort of financial aid in the form of a grant, guaranteed loan, or job. The university is committed to meeting the financial need of all admitted students while keeping loan amounts to a minimum. With the use of generous grant programs as need-based aid, Colgate continues to be a national leader in graduating students with the least amount of debt incurred for student loans.

Residential Life Housing is guaranteed at Colgate for four years and most students take advantage of a variety of housing options, which include traditional corridor-style halls, suites, college-theme houses such as Outdoor Education and the Harlem Renaissance Center; and college-owned

apartments. Some juniors and seniors students live in fraternities and sororities. A lottery is held for seniors who may wish to live off campus in privately owned residences.

Record of Success More than 95 percent of Colgate’s graduates who pursue jobs are successful in finding full-time employment within one year of graduation. The majority of Colgate students engage in the career development process early, and most seniors begin their job or graduate school search early during their senior year.

Athletics and Recreation Colgate is one of the few highly selective national liberal arts colleges with Division I athletics. In the past decade, Colgate student-athletes have been recognized 41 times as Patriot League Scholar Athlete and 50 times as Academic All-America. Seventeen percent of all students participate in intercollegiate athletics. Eighty percent of students play in 23 intramural and 20 club sports. A member of the Patriot League and ECACHL, Colgate fields 25 men’s and women’s varsity teams.

POSITION-BY-POSITIONBREAKDOWN

OFFENSE

The run-oriented Colgate offense has the potential to be the best that this school has seen since the 2003 team went to the FCS championship game. Nine of 11 starters are return-ing from last season, including senior running back Jordan Scott, a Walter PaytonAwardfinalistlastyear.Therunninggamewillbefierceandweardown defenses thanks to a bruising of-fensive line, running back and fullback, while the passing game will get better under the tutelage of senior quarter-back Alex Relph, who has a full season of starting experience under his belt. If Relph continues to improve and the Raidersfindadependablenumbertwowide receiver behind junior Pat Simo-nds, the Raiders will go toe-to-toe with the other Patriot League offenses for the right to be called the best offense in the Patriot League.

Quarterback: The signal-calling position is in the hands of Alex Relph (5-11, 185) this season. The Victor, N.Y. native, whose father was under center for the 1977Colgatesquadthatfinished10-1,continued the strong family football lineagebyfinishingsecondinPatriotLeaguepassingefficiencybehindHoly Cross quarterback and 2007 PL Offensive Player of the Year Domi-nic Randolph. He also threw for 12 touchdowns, 2,138 passing yards, and a 61.5% completion percentage, each of which was good enough for third place in the Patriot League. If there is oneflawinRelph’sgamehowever, itishis interception count. Relph needs to cut down on the picks (13 last year) in order for the Raiders to win the Patriot League and make the NCAA Playoffs forthefirsttimeinthreeyears.Back-ing him up will be sophomores Greg Sullivan (6-1, 205) and Charles Babb (5-10, 216), each of whom pro-vides great depth to the position.

Tailback: Just as there are two certainties

in life (death and taxes), there seems to be two guarantees in the village of Hamilton: record-breaking snow in the winter and record-breaking rushing performances at Andy Kerr Stadium from senior Jordan Scott (5-11, 205). He needs only 748 yards to surpass Kenny Gamble ’87 to become Colgate’s all-time leading rusher. Scott runs like abullinaChinashoponthefieldandis certainly one of the most durable and reliable tailbacks in all levels of college football today. He was also named to the preseason All-America second team for Division I-FCS foot-ball. Scott had 409 rushes and 1,875 yards for 20 touchdowns last season, and #30 will be called on hundreds of times this year to lead Colgate back to the top of the Patriot League. Further-more, Scott has rushed for over 100 yards in 13 straight games dating back to last season. Senior tailback Steve Hansen (5-8, 180) leads a group of tailbacks backing up Scott that in-cludes some speedy incoming fresh-men.

Fullback: For the second consecutive year, senior Eric Tupta (6-2, 242) will be the road blocker for Jordan Scott. Tupta’s excellent blocking last season led to Scott’s monumental year. Fur-thermore, he is a pass-catching threat outofthebackfield,ashecaught12passes for 117 yards (nine in the last fivegames).JuniorTyler Spencer (6-0, 229) and sophomore Gigi Cadet (5-10, 220) will be backing up Tupta this year.

Senior fullback Eric Tupta is a crushing blocker, and pass-catching threat for the Raiders.

Wide Receivers: Junior pass catcher Pat Simonds (6-6, 224) has established himself as Relph’s number one target after a great 2007 campaign and an excellent performance during spring ball. The deceptively quick and athletic wideout has the chance to be one of the great-est wide receivers in Colgate history if his rapid improvement continues. He caught 40 passes for 649 yards andfivetouchdownslastseasonasthe second wide receiver on the depth chart behind Erik Burke ’08, which makes his numbers even more im-pressive. Senior Sam Breslin (5-11, 195), junior Ty Henry (6-1, 174), and sophomore Doug Rosnick (6-2, 215) will all see ample playing time this season and they all have the potential to make this position one of the deep-est on the team.

Tight End: Junior Adrien Schreifer’s (6-2, 226)mainjobontheplayingfieldisto block at the line, as he does this task well. He started eight games last season primarily making his pres-ence felt against opponents looking to tackle the ballcarrier, but he did catch afewpasses(fivecatches,55yards)as well. Redshirt junior Brent Dilling-ham (6-5, 273) returns after missing last season with a right ankle injury suffered during the preseason. Sopho-more Nick Cvetic (6-5, 246), who

started one game last season against Albany, is 100% healthy and should be in full form after suffering an injury of his own last year.

Offensive Line: No one works harder than the of-fensive line, and it can be said that no Patriot League offensive line unit works harder and is better at their craft than the offensive line that can be found in the Chenango Valley. Su-perb senior left tackle Steve Jonas (6-4, 304) and senior right tackle Nick Hennessey (6-6, 300) form the foundation of this unit, as they were firstandsecondall-leagueselectionslast year, respectively. Senior guard Rich Rosabella (6-0, 277) and junior guard Zach Posey (6-2, 285) are also an excellent tandem, each of whom is returning as a multi-year starter. Junior center Ryan Gross (6-3, 272), who started multiple games in the last two seasons, is now a full-time starter at the position and should help keep the O-line’s sterling reputation. Mul-tiple underclassmen will be counted on to step up and provide much-needed depth to an offensive line that already has a great deal of experience.

DEFENSE

There are many question marks among the front seven this season. Two defensive linemen and two line-backers graduated after last year, and the team needs to look towards a group of talented yet inexperienced playerstofillthosegaps.Themain

question heading into this season is whethertheteamcanfindaplay-maker or two on the front seven that will replace the game-breaking abilities of former defensive lineman Pat Nolan and former Buck Buchanan Award candidate and linebacker Mike Galli-hugh. Also, it remains to be seen if the Raiders can maintain their awesome rushing defense for the second con-secutive year, as Colgate allowed only

Junior wideout Pat Simonds was Colgate’s second leading receiver last season with 40 catches for 649 yards and five touchdowns.

Junior defensive tackle Paul Mancuso made a career-high 34 tackles last season including 6.5 for negative yardage.

an anemic eight touchdowns on the ground, seven less than anyone else in the Patriot League. If Colgate manag-es to maintain its stellar rush defense and a couple playmakers step up, than the defense will be solid yet again, as the secondary looks to be stellar this season with three of four starters from last year’s unit coming back.

Defensive Line: Junior nose tackle Paul Mancuso (6-2, 282) and classmate and defen-sive tackle Carlton Walker (6-0, 256) return once again for their second full seasons as starters. The duo is primarily known for their run-stopping prowess. However, their bookends last season have since graduated. Colgate willsorelymissfirst-teamall-leagueand third-team All-American defensive tackle Pat Nolan, who was a solid play-maker and will be tough to replace. LookingtofillthatjobarejuniorsAus-tin Douglas (6-4, 249) and Brendan Buglione (6-3, 284). On the other end, second team all-league defensive end Ryan Keller has since moved on. Junior defensive end Juliues Barlay (6-1, 241) and senior Jim Meara

(6-1, 250) will look to keep that spot steady.

Linebackers: The tackling and turnover machine, Mike Gallihugh, has unfortunately graduated, leaving a gaping hole at in-side linebacker. This unit needs to col-lectively step up and make up for Gal-lihugh’s productivity. Junior linebacker Greg Hadley (5-11, 223) returns for his second season as a starter. He had an excellent spring camp and should be under consideration for all-league selection this season. Senior outside linebacker Ted Marshall (6-3, 229) is backaswell.Hemadefivesackslastseason and should continue his excel-lent pass-rushing abilities this year. Aside from those two players, howev-er, there is much uncertainty. Sopho-more Chris DiMassa (6-1, 228) and a group of freshmen need to come in and make their presence felt in order to keep the linebacker core strong this season.

Defensive Backs: This unit really gelled near the end of last season, and it really shined

Junior cornerback Wayne Moten had four interceptions last fall to tie for the Patriot League lead.

Junior linebacker Greg Hadley was Colgate’s third leading tackler last season with 62 including six for minus yardage.

in the last home game of the year against Lehigh, when they made three interceptions in a 21-7 win. Junior cornerback Wayne Moten (5-8, 172), who converted to the position from wide receiver in the middle of last season, was tied for the Patriot League lead with four interceptions even though he started only four games. Sophomore Coree’ Moses (6-0, 170) will step in at the other corner spot this season, and he played well last year with the opportunities that he received. The safety spots will re-main the same as they did last year, with junior strong safety Uzi Idah (5-11, 199) and sophomore free safety Mike Barry (6-1, 196) returning for their second seasons at the starting helm. Idah was second on the team in tackles with 63, while Barry registered 37 tackles in just six starts. Seniors Chris Ekpo (6-1, 198) and David Morgan (5-9, 183) will provide the secondary with much-needed experi-ence and depth.

Special teams: Senior Jacob Stein (5-10, 172) will be asked to do it all this year. PAT’s,fieldgoals, punts, andkickoffswill be handled by the three-year letter winner. The kick return spot is still up in the air, as coach Biddle may look upon some freshmen to handle that responsibility. For punt returns, coach will look to Moten and Simonds, the former having a small amount of punt return experience at the collegiate level.
