DesigneD for ColD storageSpecLight has a long history of utilizing prototype testing as an integral part of our engineering design process. Creating fluorescent luminaires that perform in cold storage environments requires fine tuning of components and influencing factors to produce high-quality results. Each fixture is designed to retain heat to keep lamp lumen output high; utilizes specular MIRO®4 reflectors for controlled light output; and manages lamp bulb wall temperature for optimum performance. The overall combination of these engineering efforts is represented in the performance table below.

The Cold Temperature Thermal Factor indicated for each fixture type is used when calculating lighting levels as an additional light loss factor (LLF). In many cases, this factor is greater than one because fixtures do not necessarily create internal temperatures in normal 25°C environments that align with the optimum lamp lumen output. The SpecLight FFB Series luminaires are designed to retain the heat necessary to optimize lamp performance at the cold temperatures indicated. Measured light output is compared with the baseline 25°C performance to create the thermal factor for each temperature. These luminaires actually perform better in cold environments than they do at normal 25°C temperatures.

SpecLight tests each luminaire in a laboratory grade thermal chamber at each typical cold storage temperature to accurately predict installed performance. Ramping tests are performed starting at 25°C to establish a reference point and then the temperature is lowered progressively to colder set points. Fixtures are stabilized and various key temperatures are taken for components and light output measured. The resulting data allows for informed luminaire selection and the ability to fit the right product to the specific user application.

Recommended for cold storage applicationsa

Energy efficient fluorescent lighting solutions are now available for cold storage facilities. SpecLight’s superior design capabilities and deep understanding of fluorescent lamp and ballast technology has combined to create a new series of fluorescent luminaires that perform in temperatures to -20°F/-29°C.

Industry standard light loss factors for the different systems were applied. Work plane is at the floor. Where lamp manufacturer published data varies, the most conservative figure has been used.

Up to 50% Energy Savings – T5HO and T8 fluorescent luminaires offer 40-50% energy savings over metal halide systems.

Reduced Refrigeration Load – Lower input watts reduces the heat load contribution for lighting inside the cooled space by up to 50% over HID systems.

Instant On-Off and Occupancy Sensor Control – Fluorescent lighting is ideal for use with motion sensor switching in lower occupancy areas for increased energy savings.

Improved Color – Higher CRI for fluorescent systems provides better visibility and color recognition for workers in cold storage areas.

Longer Life / Better Lumen Maintenance – Fluorescent lighting systems have nearly twice the lamp life with 95% of rated lumens at mean life compared to 65% for metal halide.

Emergency Lighting – Fluorescent lighting systems can be fitted with on-board battery back up that eliminates the need for separate self-contained emergency lighting equipment.

Motion sensors can be used in many cases for increased energy savings in cold storage applications. Detailed testing has been conducted at SpecLight to determine the performance characteristics of sensors in various lamp control configurations. The primary design factor that should be considered in using sensors is the time required for cold lamps to come up to a reasonable level of brightness to serve the required task.

The starting and warm-up characteristics of T5HO and T8 lamps differ and the time to achieve reasonable brightness varies based on the temperature of the lamp when it is required to start. In order to maintain some warmth in the fixture to improve the warm-up time a strategy of leaving two or more lamps on continuously can be deployed. The chart indicates possible lamp control configurations for high and low activity aisles. Application should be made based on understanding the specific operation for each project.
