AG 2015 has roared intolife, with the expansiveExCel arena humming to

the noise of thousands ofmachines and redemption games,as the latest video titles competebombastically for the wise rovingeyes of the shows many visitors.Stalking the halls deep in conver-sation are groups of operators onthe prowl for the next big thing, while the combined expertise ofthe coin-op industry gathers topromote its latest and greatestproducts.

Held earlier than any EAGbefore it, this years event is a truecurtain raiser for the industry andas the show progresses throughits three-day run, may well prove alitmus test for the trends of thecoming year.

Along these lines, the potentialof redemption continues to blos-som, with a number of the mostwell known suppliers, includingthe likes of RLMS and UDC, choos-ing to dedicate their most valuablestand real estate to the latest inno-vations in ticket-based entertain-ment.

Theres more of a leisure-cen-tric flair to the hall in general thisyear, with the debut of the VisitorAttraction Expo seamlesslyadjoining its larger cousin. Theline is further blurred by thestrategic positioning of kiddieride stalwarts, such as World ofRides, on the invisible borderbetween the two shows. The pro-gramme of seminars also takesplace under VAEs aegis, markinganother sign of integrationbetween new and old.

Thats a theme that BATCA are

hoping grows from their work atthis years event. Infusing the sto-ried coin-op sector with thevibrancy of new ideas. Also tomake the show in many ways a cel-ebration of British industry.Machines designed and built herein the UK are the mainstay of theshow, with the likes of JNC andmany others exporting thesehighly sought after creations tocountries around the world.

The reverse is also true andtheres plenty of the worlds bestimports on show this year, clam-bering to make an impact in theUK market. In many ways EAG isan international event, withnames like Elaut and Team Playmaking regular appearancesacross suppliers stands.

    A renewed sense of optimism

from the entire coin-op industry, which has grown from an improv-ing economy and was provided acatalyst in the form of the AutumnCoin-op Show, is being reflectedat this EAG. Not only on the stands, but in the spaces between them.Sales people are taking a momentout from their work to pose withthe life-size Despicable Me min-ions that Whitehouse Leisure hasunleashed on the show floor, while a inflatable Frankensteinsmonster leaps playfully at unsus-pecting visitors. The mood, all told,is that of cautious positivity. Thiswill be a big year for the industryand the potential for EAG to catchfire and abandon that note of cau-tion may yet again demonstratethe show's power as a trend setterfor the 12 months that follow it.

Earlier than ever, but no lesscurrent, EAG once againsets out to establish thetone of the year in coin-op,with a cautious optimismpervading its early hours.Joe Ewens reports.

G Gaming has inkeda landmark five-yeardeal with Mecca

Bingo to provide thenationwide operator witha comprehensive server-based gaming package. Thedeal sees Mecca unite withSG to blanket the com-panys UK bingo clubs withdigital B3 and Cat C contentpulled from a central server. As part of the agreement SGwill supply a range of Clar-ity, T8 and T7 cabinets, which will run a set of thecompanys exclusivegames, along with a selec-tion of titles from Playtechsubsidiary Videobet.

We are delighted thatMecca has chosen SGGaming to be their supplierof choice for server-basedgaming, said SG GamingUK group managing direc-tor, Phil Horne. This is agroundbreaking deal thatrepresents a major step for-

ward for the bingo sector. The acquisition of Bally

Games and WMS Gamingby SG parent company Sci-entific Games is thought tohave played a key role inincreasing the attractive-ness of SGs server basedoffering, along with theproven profitability ofsome of Scientifics mostsuccessful in-house titles. These will include Rain-bow Riches, as well as thecontinuation of keylicensed titles, such asMonopoly Hot Properties, and WMS titles The Wizardof Oz Over the Rainbow,Zeus II and Black Knight.

Mecca and SG Gaminghave already demonstrateda strong working partner-ship in delivering a com-petitive gaming offer, andwe are excited to continuethis in the years ahead, saidHorne. This fully inte-grated gaming solution will

provide Mecca with a rangeof hardware solutions andoperational efficienciesthat are designed to drivecash box growth. We haveinvested heavily into ourplatform solution over thepast few years and we aredelighted to see the imple-mentation of this solutioninto the bingo sector onsuch a large scale.

The newly openedUK TITO market alsoforms an important partof the deal. Each individ-ual server-based installa-tion will include a fullynetworked termi-nal, which, among otheroperational bene-fits, will make theprovision of a fullTITO system ap o s s i b i l i t y .Mecca staff willalso be able touse data collected

This deal goes a longway in meeting our slotsstrategy and, more impor-tantly, our customer needs, noted Mohammed Zabed, head of slots at Mecca. Thisdeal provides Mecca with adigital server-based gamingsolution for our clubs. Thetrials we jointly undertookdemonstrated that the con-tent provision, yield analyt-ics and enhanced platformtools drive improvementsin cash box revenue andcustomer participation. This was instrumental inmaking our decision. Therange of hardware, plat-form and diversity of con-tent will provide acomprehensive solutionthat will cater to all cus-tomer types and sup-port our multi-channelconvergence strategy.

Ahead of the new block-buster release in 2015,the minions at WhitehouseLeisures plush stall havebeen given a makeover, with a fresh set of costumesdeveloped under theextended licence.

The popularity of theminions last year just blewus away; its been easily ourbiggest line ever in the his-

tured in time for the show.Although the company

had to rush to completethe range,Whitehouse willnot be allowed to deliverany of the products untilthe May 1st. However, stand representatives arestill taking orders in prepa-ration for that date.

A favourite of ours isthe young minion out ofthe movie, said Whitting-ham. Hes little and fat andcute and he carries histeddy around with him. We're expecting him to bethe most popular charac-ter in the film, and the mostsought after.

TECHNOLOGY Clacton has gone cashlessas the pier opts for a cashless payment andaccess system. So why the change? 14

he Astra Gaming Group is no morefollowing the announcement thatit is to change its name to Novo-

matic UK. The move brings it in line withAustrian gaming giant, Novomatic, whowholly own the successful UK company.

The change takes place with immediateeffect and is expected to have no immedi-ate impact on the operation of the busi-ness. Novomatic UK replaces the AstraGaming Group in all of its functions, including its role as the holding group forUK gaming companies Astra Games, Bell-Fruit Games, Empire Games, Extreme LiveGaming, Gamestec, Greentube, LuxuryLeisure, Mazooma Interactive Gamingand RLMS Sales.

The rationale behind the name changeis to adopt a more logical approach to thegroups activities and reinforce the inher-ent values and core strengths of the Novo-matic brand within the UK marketplace, said an official statement.

Change is on the horizon for the newlyminted Novomatic UK, however, withconfirmation that they will open a newheadquarters in Brentford, Londonduring the first quarter of 2015. Deliber-ately positioned in the nations capitaland commercial hub, the new locationwill also include a new studio space forNovomatics live casino dealer provider,Extreme Live Gaming.

The Astra Gaming Group brand hasserved its purpose well as a means of inte-grating the Novomatic Group into the UKgaming space, said group CEO Zane Mer-sich. With that integration now complete,we are able to focus our efforts more effec-tively on taking the Group business for-ward under the auspices of the globallyrenowned Novomatic brand.

Novomatic have made theirpresence felt in the UKmarketplace, and not just withtheir product portfolio. Thecompany has made the sensibleand obvious step of changing itsidentity - the Astra GamingGroup is now Novomatic UK.

Flanking one side of the vibrantRLMS Sales stand at EAG 2015 isthe bright orange Vortex machine, accompanied by creator MarcusSheehan (pictured). He has highhopes for his creation at the show, andwith good reason. A number of his testunits in the field have been garneringhigh praise. So much so that in recentweeks, Sheehan revealed that a majorarcade operator has opted to pur-chase two of its test units outright.

Vortex has been whipping up astorm across the country in many dif-ferent sectors. It went to the TraffordCentre, Bognor Regis, Butlins, Prim-rose Valley and two coastal operators, said Sheehan. The game is a uniquetake on redemption, challenging play-ers to step inside a wind-filled cap-sule to snatch at tickets as they whirl

around them. The machine also sharesa feature with the slots titles thatoccupied the EAG hall. Tickets thatare not selected are stored for a spe-cial jackpot round, unleashed whenthe back box is full. All the tickets thathavent been caught get put back intothe machine, said Sheehan, andthats four or five hundred.

Vortex plays a part in a growingfocus on redemption for RLMS, thatsees a major portion of its sizeableEAG presence given over this rapidlygrowing FEC sector. Weve definitelygot more redemption than previousyears, said the companys MartynAllsop. It certainly seems to be theway to go. For many arcades its beena major growth area over the last twoor three years and were respondingto that marketplace.

  • Reflex Gaming will beusing this weeks EAGto show off a trio of newCategory-C Lite machinesin Bank Raid Platinum,Robin The Rich Mini andLady Luck Band of Gold, all featuring a 10p/20pprice-of-play alongside a5/10 jackpot.

The Newark-basedcompany is currentlyexploring the prospectthat these machines couldoffer something new andrefreshing to the adultgaming centre and bingosectors in addition to pubretail estates in place oftired SWP positions.

Quentin Stott, manag-ing director for ReflexGaming, stated that he isalso expecting great inter-est in his firms Royal 100digital compendium, which is being provided tooperators on a two-yearrental so that they canupdate machines on siteor move to new locations.First unveiled at the recentAutumn Coin-Op Show,Stott stated that this inno-vation has receivedextremely positive reac-tions with operatorssimply required to returnthe machine to ReflexGaming at the end of thetwo years.

EAG has always beenimportant for us as a com-pany and it has helped usin our transition into amajor player within thehigh-tech Category-Cmarket in the last fewyears, said Stott.

ACTA will be pushing forMachine Gaming Duty(MGD) to be halved tem-

porarily to off-set the cost of thenew pound coin in 2017.

Following the Chancellor'sannouncement last Spring that anew twelve-edged coin would beintroduced to combat counterfeit-ing, the organisation has beendeveloping plans to buffer theindustry against the oncomingexpense.

BACTA chief executiveJohn White said: The thingthat we have to keep point-ing out is that we cantpass on any cost in theamusements industry. Were constrained notonly by the coinageitself, but also by havinga maximum stake. So anytime theres a costincrease, it just comesstraight off the bottom line.

Although the final figuresare yet to be calculated, BACTAestimates that the cost to theamusements industry to convertall the coin mechanisms willamount to approximately 100million.

In principle, were saying to thegovernment, you really need to

support this important industry byreducing the rate of MGD from 20percent to 10 percent, explainedWhite. It will cost the treasury

whatever itll cost us, and in thegreater scheme of things, 100

million isnt a lot for them.White believes that, com-

bined with other strugglesaffecting the industry, theunprecedented costcould strike a fatal blowto some companies andmake thousands ofmachines redundant ifthey can't be converted.

We are an importantindustry at the seaside

and on the high street; wehave high tech, creative

manufacturing base andwere supporting pubs and

clubs with our products. So,with all of that, the governmentreally should be helping us, hesaid.

BACTA will also campaign for areduction in MGD on SWPs from20 to 5 percent, but it is only plan-

ning to ask for a temporary reduc-tion on the tax for other machineswhile the industry is in transition.

We anticipate the entire thingtaking around three to six monthsand theres a whole logistical exer-cise to be undertaken beforehandto pre-load, said White. Peoplehave to make decisions aboutwhen and what machines theyregoing to convert and that alldepends on where the new poundcoins are in the country.

Full details of the proposals, including the exact period of timeMGD would be reduced for, are stillbeing formulated by BACTA. Afterdeveloping firmer cost estimates, however, the organisation willsoon be meeting with the treasury.

Theres a new person whosjust joined the treasury on the civilservice side and once wevespoken to him then we can start toescalate the campaign, said White.

At the moment, however,White and his colleagues are stillestablishing the minutiae of theproposition.

Weve said we would do it andwe will, said White, But weve gotto put the case together in a lotmore detail than its current form.We have to get some serious num-bers behind us.

    CURRENCY

Anew app which will allow pub owners tooffer a pay-per-play background music serv-ice is being launched this week by Soundnet atEAG in London.

Soundjack BGM will compliment the com-panys existing app, which lets customers inpubs and other venues select and play jukeboxsongs remotely.

SoundNet communications manager TobyHoyte said the app would offer an innovativesource of revenue for landlords and site owners.

Whats revolutionary about this is that, whereas before they only made money out of juke-boxes, they never made money out of giving some-one a background music service, he explained. This is the first time someone can generate someincome from background music.

The app, which was developed especially forAndroid and iOS products, can also be sched-uled to play certain types of music at certain

times of the day. Hoyte said: You can choose whatever music

fits with the brand of the site as a whole, and wetry and make sure that the sites that use Sound-Jack have precisely the music they need to fitwith their profile.

The app offers a jukebox-style service for cus-tomers at a venue without the need for a physicalmachine, but Hoyte believes the product couldalso assist with branding.

Theres control in the hands of the site owner,he said. If customers want to play Metallica, theywont be able to do that if the owner doesnt wantMetallica being played.

Since Soundjack BGM is specifically designed tobe used in a commercial setting, it also offers a legalalternative to online streaming services such as Spo-tify which are intended solely for private use.

Its a managed music service, so you get theright music at the right site, and its perfectly legal.

Those are the two main things Soundjack offers, said Hoyte.

After being taken over in summer 2014 byNorth America-based TouchTunes, SoundNet hasbeen looking to the US for inspiration.

Hoyte said: We do know that people are usingtheir phones increasingly now, at an acceleratedpace, to select and play music in a pub.

Both Soundjack BGM and the existing Sound-jack jukebox app are intended to support thegrowth of this trend in the UK market, puttingmobile control in the hands of customers.

In terms of machine suppliers, music hasalways been part of their range of services thatthey provide to the sites, said Hoyte. But itsan absolutely key part of a sites offering in the21st century.

New background music app launched at EAGMUSIC

B BACTA will ask for a temporary MGD reduction to helpamusements manufacturers cope with the 2017 switch-over to the new 1 coin. But will the government bepersuaded by the case of an initiative that will costmillions and millions of pounds.

  • hen 100 jackpotmachines wereintroduced in Janu-

ary 2014, the change gave awelcome break to a strug-gling sector, but for gamesmanufacturer Bell-Fruit, italso served as a reminder ofthe challenges facing theindustry.

I think it is fair to say thatthe new 100 prize helpedto stem the decline in Cat Cperformance, says man-agement and sales director John McLoughlin, But Cat

C will struggle to competeso long as there is such a dis-parity as we still seebetween pubs/AGCs andthe B2 machines in LBOs.

With this in mind, Bell-Fruit is planning to workclosely with the GamblingBusiness Group (GBG) andBACTA to lobby key policymakers for change in 2015.This will include a cam-paign for the GamblingCommission and DCMS toapprove changes to Techni-cal Standards. In addition,Bell-Fruit will push for thegovernment to formalize atimetable for reviews ofstakes and prizes in anamendment to the 2005Gambling Act.

This may allow theintroduction of featuresthat enable Cat C machinesto compete with otherleisure spend opportuni-ties, explains McLoughlin.

In addition to these leg-islative campaigns, the keychallenge for 2015 is toensure that Bell-Fruit con-tinues to produce innova-tive games. The companyresponded to the prize-money increase last yearwith a wave of popular100 AWPs includingimproved versions of clas-sic Deal or No Deal andMonopoly games, and it stillattests to the crucial impor-tance of its products.

As always the greatestchallenge is to continue toproduce the best games inboth analogue and digitalformats, McLoughlin com-mented. Since last year wehave learned a lot aboutdeveloping ever bettergames and we are con-stantly honing our statisti-cal profile to ensure that wegive the player the best pos-sible experience.

One of the companysbiggest success stories, theDeal or No Deal licence, will continue to featureprominently in Bell-Fruitsrange this year. McLoughlincomments: Deal or NoDeal has been extremelypopular ever since welaunched our first gameback in 2006, and I haveevery confidence that itwill maintain its appealthrough 2015 and beyond.

However, with the con-tinued issues faced by theCat C sector, the companyis committed to releasingbrand new products tomaintain its competitiveedge.

We, like our competi-tors, are only as good as ourlatest game, but I believethat we have the best teamof games designers in thebusiness who will continueto focus on bringing inno-vative and exciting con-cepts to market, saysMcLoughlin.

With the recently-established GamblingBusiness Group adding another string to theindustrys bow and BACTA revving up for a fightover FOBTs, 2015 could be a year of positivechange for Cat C games manufacturers.Bell-Fruits John McLoughlin explains how thecompany aims to get ahead in the coming year.

oinslot: Are thereany new businesschallenges you

anticipate for the comingyear?Peter Harvey: An ongoingpipeline of new productsand games is crucial in thisindustry, and we workclosely in partnership withthe manufacturers toencourage this. In thelonger term, the introduc-tion of the new polymerbanknotes and 1 coins in2016 and 2017 respectivelywill have a significantimpact across the wholecoin-operated sector. Ourmachines will need to beupgraded so they acceptthe new currency, andthere will be a large costassociated with this. How-ever, we are working witha number of cross industrybodies to find ways to limitthe damage caused, partic-ularly to family and singlesite operators who couldbe put out of business bythe extra investment. Inaddition, we are currently

trialling ticket-in-ticket-outtechnologies (TITO) acrossour venues, which will alle-viate the issue of incompat-ible machines.

CS: How does Talariusanticipate FOBT machinesto affect trade in 2015?PH: The AGC industry isdoing all it can to competewithin its regulatory frame-work, but the existence ofthe far higher stake FOBTmachines on the high streetin betting shops means cus-tomers have far morechoice when they lookbeyond our venues. We con-tinue to respond to this as abusiness by focusing on ourstaff, customer service andvenue infrastructure, butregulatory imbalance is ulti-mately a hindrance on oursuccess.

CS: What other action isTalarius taking in responseto the challenge of FOBTproviders? PH: We are working withpolitical parties and the restof our sector to press for thisissue to be looked at, andpropose a solution wherebythe maximum stake on B2machines is reduced signifi-cantly to a level that the nextgovernment and responsi-ble gaming bodies are morecomfortable with, at whichpoint AGCs should also haveaccess to those newmachine limits.

As an industry we needa root and branch overhaulof the AWP offering and aclear and honest appraisalof what the modern con-sumer is looking for and ifwe are delivering it, statedPaul Langham, vice chair-man of the IndependentOperators Association(IOA).

Is there something elsewe can do differently?asked BACTA presidentSteve Hawkins. How canwe reinvent this industry tomake sure that were setwell for the next 20 to 30years?

    Pub closure rates have

levelled considerably sincetheir nadir of the 2009-2010 fallout period fromthe financial crisis. How-ever, leisure is an areadependent on a customer-base comfortable with itsdegree of expendableincome, and here - theres aproblem. Whilst the UKeconomy has stabilised andeven enjoyed limitedgrowth since the first quar-ter of 2013, the spendinghabits of the public remainin the recession mindset. InLanghams words: Thespending public is far morediscerning and far morecanny about what theyspend their hard earnedcash on.

The decline of the UKpub sector is muchlamented within coin-op

circles, for concurrent withpub closures comes adiminishment of the tradi-tional market for AWP trade. That said, there are thosewho still thrive within thisindustry: Greene King andWetherspoons are but twomulti-million pound opera-tors who continue toexpand.

The character of thepubs which have closed isalso of note. In 2009, whenpubs were going out of busi-ness at the frightening rateof 52 per week, researchfrom the BBPA showed thaton average, 51 of theseestablishments were wet-led, in that they predomi-nately sold beer. At the sametime, branded pubs andcafe-style bars were open-ing at the rate of two a week.

It was figures such as thesewhich prompted the BBCshome editor Mark Easton toclaim: The pubs that areclosing, overwhelmingly, are those that existed toserve customers who cameto drink and to smoke: with-out the beguiling fug oftobacco smoke and thedraw of cheap beer, suchplaces find it much harderto survive.

    Thats not to say that

increased governmentunderstanding of the eco-nomic contribution of boththe UK pub and amusementindustries would aid theplight of AWP, but it shouldbe recognised that a transi-tion is occurring in whatwas once a stable and recog-nisable marketplace.

The question posed, theindustry as a whole nowneeds to establish how bestto adapt.

    The call for AWP overhaul

British pubs arechanging. For IOAvice chairman PaulLangham, so tooshould the traditionalAWP offering.

lacton Pier has takenthe plunge and gonecashless.

Installation of SemnoxsParfait solution in thecoming weeks will see thedeployment of self servicekiosks at the pier for cus-tomers to purchase and top-up access cards, whilstwaterproof wireless read-ers for exterior rides willallow them to enjoy the full

spectrum of Clactons offer-ing without the constantrequirement for currency.

Its a significant invest-ment, and one that wasnttaken lightly.

Its a huge step for us: itsa leap of faith of sorts, claims Elliot Ball, executivedirector of the Clacton PierCompany. Its true that thetechnology involved mayinitially be unfamiliar to

both customers and staffalike, and its that line ofthinking which underlies ahealthy skepticism on Ballsbehalf regarding short-termsales impact: Whether ornot itll benefit us in termsof straight-off-the-batincrease of income, wellhave to wait and see, heconcedes.

Long-term, however, thebenefits of the new system

seem manifold. First of all, its going to

tighten all the controls hereat the pier - which is themain reason to put it in, hesays. But there are alsotremendous implicationson a number of othersfronts as well.

Its no exaggeration. Withdigitalisation, comes data:the kind of data that willshow Ball uptake levels andfootfall. Those sort ofreports will enable us tomake more informed deci-sion in the future, he adds.

Then, there are the mar-keting implications to con-sider. The system allows theoffer of package deals topier-goers that can be easily

tracked and accounted for.As Ball puts it: Thats mar-keting directly into our cus-tomer-base.

Finally, freed fromcashier duties, a shift offocus can take place regard-ing the responsibilities ofstaff. Essentially, our teamcan be more outward-look-ing and maximise their cus-tomer service provision, says Ball.

In a seasonal industry, timing is everything, and itsno coincidence that thesystem is being fittedduring this quieter winterperiod. It should be up-and-running by the Februaryhalf-term, Ball tells us. Thatway, well have five or six

weeks grace for our staff tofully converse with thesystem before we hit theground running for theEaster holidays.

Whilst Clacton Pier isntthe first leisure operation toopt for a catch-all cashlesssolution, it is perhaps thefirst of its scale and scope -at least within the UK. ForBall, its indicative of whathe believes to be an upcom-ing snow-ball effect inwhich operators nationallymake the switch. Our feel-ing is that once its installed, its going to revolutioniseeverything that were doinghere, he concludes. Its thefuture - its the way theindustrys going.

    Clacton goescashless PIERS

Clacton Pier has opted for a catch-all cashless payment andaccess system. For its executive director Elliot Ball, it willrevolutionise the way that Clacton - and ultimately the industry atlarge - does business.

An Ameco spokespersontold the South WalesEvening Post: The conse-quence of the delays meana redesign of the scheme, especially the coastal stripsite, and a renegotiationwith third party develop-ers.

LOBBYING The general election offers a significant opportunity forchange in the industry. The Gambling Business Group is determined tohelp drive that process. 26

he soaring tempera-tures of last summerwere welcome

news for seaside operatorsthroughout the UK, withsunny days heraldingbusier businesses andbetter takings. For PavilionAmusements in Devon, however, a hands-onapproach is key to encour-aging custom even incolder weather.

No matter what theweather is, the manage-ment of the business isparamount, said LindaWhyte of Pavilion Amuse-ments. I feel during thisrecession we need to con-nect with the customersand make it more personal,so they know they are wel-

come and that we appreci-ate their custom becausethey are keeping us in busi-ness.

With this firm customerservice focus at the centreof the management strat-egy, the company has noplans to follow the lead ofClacton Pier and invest in acash free ticketing system.

Whyte explained: Wehave put the digital cash-less system on the backburner because this is verymuch a hands-on, meet andgreet business. Time willtell whether it is the futureof seaside amusements.

At the core of this is apush for consistent stan-dards in order to offset thefeast and famine patterns

that can characterise thisseasonal sector of theindustry. Whyte believesthat friendly service hascontributed to a loyal baseof customers who return tothe arcade regardless ofweather conditions.

We need to hit ourtarget turnover whether itshot, raining or snowing, she said. Its very impor-tant that the business isclean and the staff are pleas-ant - we take what we aregiven with the weather.

The second focus for thebusiness is on productssuch as licensed redemp-tion and new products thatprovide entertainment fordifferent generations with-out being too technical.

Some of our customersneed guidance on how touse basic machines like theticket stations, Whyteadded.

This is reflected in theinvestments PavilionAmusements are looking tomake at the big trade showsthis year, with a focus onskill and family fun gamesas well as prizes based oncurrent films.

However, Whyte con-cedes that keeping up withtrends is important, inaddition to a maintainingfamily-friendly atmos-phere. In this difficult cli-mate it is very important toinvest in new products tokeep the interest of thepublic, she said.

offee shops could outnum-ber pubs in the UK in justover a decades time

according to new research by theDaily Mirrors data journalismwebsite ampp3d.

By combining studies fromresearch consultancy AllegraStrategies and the British Beer andPub Association that show a sharpdecline in pubs and rapid rise incoffee shops, the data team con-cluded that there could be morecoffee shops than pub as soon as2026.

However, the BBPA suggestedthat the analysis could be mislead-ing, as the rate of decline in the pub

sector had been slowing in recentmonths.

A spokesperson for the associa-tion told industry magazine EatOut: It is impossible to predict thatfar ahead. Our own research showsthat pub closures have slowed andare now lower than previouslythought - we estimate at around 13per week. There is increasing con-fidence in the sector, not least dueto government action in cuttingpunitive rates of beer duty, whichhit pubs hard.

A third duty cut in the MarchBudget would help to stabilisebeer sales, keeping more pubsopen, as beer sales still account for

two thirds of all drinks in pubs.Figures show that in 1982 there

were 70,000 pubs in the UK, whilethe latest parliamentary statisticssuggest that there are now fewerthan 50,000.

The research said factorsincluding the recession, anincrease in sales of alcohol insupermarkets and the strainedrelations between publicans andpub owners within the pubcomodel could be responsible forthe decline.

The last decade has seen asteady rise in the number of coffeeshops in the UK, even during therecession; there were 10,685

shops in 2008 and 15,213 in 2011.By extrapolating the figures, the

website suggested that, should thenumber of pubs continue to fallsharply and the number of coffeeshops continue to rise signifi-cantly, the latter will overtake theformer in 2026.

Martyn Herriott, chairman ofthe Beverage Standards Associa-tion, agreed with the BBPA that itwas impossible to predict so farinto the future.

Herriott said an increase in thenumber of coffee shops would bea good thing, as long as the qualityof equipment and final productremained high.

    Pubs couldsoon beoutnumberedby coffee shopsPUBS

New research has suggested that the UK may soonhave more coffee shops than it does pubs - a claim theBBPA has cast doubt on.

Report TO COMMENT ON ANY ARTICLEEmail: [email protected] resortsdebate highlightsnorth-south divide

debate by MPs on the issuesfacing seaside resorts hasidentified a north/south

divide in the coastal town leisureeconomy.

Liberal Democrat John Pugh, whoscheduled the Economic growthand coastal towns debate held atWestminster Hall last week, revealedthat the divide largely favouredthose resorts in the south.

Pugh said the finding had beenmade in a recent report by SheffieldHallam Universitys Centre forRegional Economic and SocialResearch that was commissioned byBritish Destinations and partlyfunded by BACTA.

He told fellow seaside MPs:Hallam says that at the moment thetowns doing best off the back oftourism are largely, but not invari-ably, in the south, and those doing

worst are largely in the north.I note that the hon. Member for

Blackpool South is here today andBlackpool is an example thatHallam cited as one of the resortsthat has been most hit by change inleisure trends.

So there appears to be some sortof north-south divide - not exclu-sively, because obviously some areasalong the Essex coast have taken ahit too.

Pugh, MP for Southport, said thatwhile the ambition to rebalance thenational economy had been one ofthe best, too much focus on citieshas had a detrimental effect on sea-side resorts in the north.

He explained: There is a logic inthat, as cities are obviously crucial, but it can mean that resorts are over-looked. That is because cities in thenorth, as they develop, can competein new ways against resorts.

We have certainly seen that inmy area. Manchester and Liverpoolare now very active in the confer-ence sector; in a sense, they havestolen business from places such asBlackpool.

Pugh said constantly developingcity centres are now sold not ashubs of industry but as leisure des-tinations in their own right, givingthem a tourism advantage as theyremain better connected than mostother areas.

    This problem was compounded

in many parts on the north by keylocal decision makers who do notfocus on the coast at all, he added.

He said: The new money - if thereis new money at all - tends to comein via the cities and not throughother routes.

Although there is the coastalcommunities fund, and we are gladto have it, the per capita spend ofthat fund is a drop in the ocean com-pared with city deals.

Addressing Penny Mordant,under-secretary of state for commu-nities and local government and MPfor Portsmouth North, Pugh calledon the coalition to consider coastalpolicy in the context of wider gov-ernment policy.

He commented: Personally, Iwould like the minister to have morepower: to fight our corner on trans-port; to oblige the local enterprisepartnerships to take more notice oftheir coastal towns; to protect andsupport marketing strategies in atime of council cuts; and perhapseven to lobby the Treasury for VATcuts for in-bound tourism, as hap-pens in some competitor countries.

We are not a basket case. All wereally need is a fair deal that is boltedproperly into government policy inall departments. We are necessarilyon the margins of Britain, but we donot want to be a marginal after-thought when it comes to Govern-ment policy.

MPs have heard how seaside resorts in the south have prospered while those in the northstruggled, as highlighted in a report funded by BACTA.

    SEASIDE RESORTS

ALAN CAMPBELL, TYNEMOUTH (LAB):If we get back to a 1930s level of public spending, we willend up with a deteriorated public realm; we saw that asrecently as the 1980s, and seasidetowns bore the brunt of that.In the north-east we haveproblems with a relativelylow-wage economy, zerohours and under-employment. If seasidetowns depend on thespending power of resi-dents as well as visitors, and we end up with a low-wage economy, seaside townswill continue to struggle.

MARTIN VICKERS, CLEETHORPES (CON):Having come through the years ofdecline, the resort has rein-vented itself. The invest-ments from PleasureIsland and BourneLeisure have played amajor part in developingthe resort for the twenty-first century. Cleethorpeshas seen many new busi-ness grow and the unem-ployment rate continues to fall. This government have done a greatdeal to support that, particularly through the regional growthfund and the coastal communities fund, which have helpedvarious resorts.

ADRIAN SANDERS, TORBAY (LIB DEM):My main request to the governmentis not on VAT but to increase theamount of money in thecoastal communities fundby a significant amount byraiding a tiny percentageof the regional growthfund. As small coastalcommunities are full ofsmall businesses, theycannot lever in the kind ofprivate sector money thatthey need to compete fairly forregional growth funding. The coastalcommunities fund, which is tailor-madefor coastal communities, is theobvious way forward.

GORDON MARSDEN,BLACKPOOL SOUTH(LAB):We must have decenteconomic drivers in sea-side towns such as Black-pool. Small businesses need

INDUSTRY AMUSEMENTS LEISURE BUSINESS B2B COMMENT NEWSWEEK

INNOVATION A new kind of pub is emerging on the streetsof London. But where does gaming fit in to the changing faceof public house? 28

orts debate: so what did your MP say?the regional bank proposals the Labourparty has made in connection with a Britishinvestment bank. We need the governmentto recognise the big issue of houses in multi-ple occupation and the unfairness of localgovernment settlements, which has beenspelled out since 2010, with skewed demog-raphy and pepper-pot deprivation not beingrecognised in funding.

DAMIAN COLLINS, FOLKESTONE ANDHYTHE (CON):We will never regener-ate our coastaltowns if we feelsorry for them.We should feelproud of them, and we shouldmake being a180-degree townon the coast avirtue. The coast ineast Kent has a brightfuture. We are on the edge of a genuine

coastal regeneration, but the govern-ments role in providing infrastructureinvestment through the growth funds andlocal enterprise partnershipsto support that growthwill be vital.

CHRIS RUANE,VALE OF CLWYD(LAB):What is central gov-ernment doing for

    investment in myconstituencys

coastal towns? InRhyl it is closing theoffice of HMRC and the familycourts, and will either close orrelocate the Crown post office. The50-year decline, especially of sea-

side bucket and spade communities, has not been addressed properly. In

Wales it is now being addressed and Iurge the minister to take a look at the bestpractice in Wales.

ERIC OLLERENSHAW, LANCASTER ANDFLEETWOOD (CON):I welcome what the Government have

done in the past five years through signif-icant investment. A great deal more

is needed I suggest that whicheverparty next has power, we mayneed a minister for coastal com-munities to bring all the dis-parate parts of governmenttogether and build on theachievements of the present

    government.

    PENNY MORDAUNT,PORTSMOUTH NORTH

(CON. AND UNDER-SEC-RETARY OF STATE FORCOMMUNITIES ANDLOCAL GOVERN-MENT):The government are atone with the honourablemembers in wanting tosee our coastal towns thrive

    and we are com-mitted tomaking thembetter placesto live, workand visit. Wehave donethat through avariety of toolsand incentives,freedoms and flexi-bilities to help drivegrowth and create jobs, including thecoastal communities fund; tax breaks;

We have a new team at theDCMS and there will be a newgovernment elected in May. Weare working with and supportingthe new DCMS team to help withtheir understanding of the widerindustry and its issues in orderthat they are able to be effectivein the shortest possible time andthat they do not inadvertentlycause unnecessary problems forour members and their busi-nesses as a result of any misun-derstanding.

We are going to see a new gov-ernment elected on May 7th andwe will be focusing on makingthat transition as trouble free andprogressive for the industry andour members as possible.

There will be a host of newnames in key positions through-

out the parliamentary structureand this is an opportunity for usto offer and share knowledge-based learning about the UK gam-bling industry as opposed toreaching decisions and viewsderived from the many misrepre-sentations they may have read inthe national press.

We are pleased that the generalresponse to the recent researchsponsored by RGT has beenmeasured. The thought processregarding the next steps is under-way and we are contributing tothat dialogue accordingly. How-ever, we are mindful that what-ever conclusions are reached andwhatever actions are proposedmust be thoroughly understood, including the risks and nature ofany unintended consequences.Furthermore, they should not beassumed to apply to other (nonB2) products without similar sup-porting evidence being in place. The importance of this criticalpiece of work cannot be over-

stated, not just for the Bookies, but for the industry as a whole.

The last issue that I would liketo highlight is the remit and roleof our regulator The GamblingCommission in the light ofGreene Kings recently success-ful First-Tier tribunal appeal. Inthe narrative, the Judge madesome statements regarding theassumed scope of authority of theCommission which, if theyremain, will have implications forall of us and potentially our rela-tionship with our regulator.Everyone will be aware that theGambling Commission disagreewith the judgement and arelaunching an appeal to the UpperTribunal Court, however, whilstthis maybe an uncomfortableposition for the Commission tofind themselves in, the period ofuncertainty is not good for theindustry and worse still, wecould find ourselves in a pro-tracted state of limbo if it is notdealt with quickly.

BACTA CALL FOR LOWER TAXON SWPS

BACTA has proposed a reduction ofGame Machine Duty (GMD) on SWPs

from 20% to 5% in a move to aidstruggling pub owners. Pubs are a vital community asset, said BACTA chief executiveJohn White. And thesemachines help keepthem going. Thereare approximately15,000 SWPs in theUK with an averageweekly taking ofaround 20, of whicha fifth currently goeson tax.

It's not a lot of money, which isgood, because if the Chancelloragrees to cut the current rate to 5%

ere you to travel backtwenty years, grab theaverage pub-goer, and

then show them The Bohemia -the latest high-street pub in NorthFinchley, London - there isnt agreat deal they would recognise.Beer is served - thats true enough- but theres no sign of the behe-moth brands here: none of yourFosters or Carlsberg or Heineken.Instead, handles bearing thenames of ales and lagers mosthave never heard of line the bar. These are so-called craft beers, drinks from independent brew-eries here in the UK, or importedat a premium.

The interiors are sleek andtrendy. The demographic is youngand professional. The gender splitis even. Knitting and writinggroups take their seats alongsidethose merely out for a social. Foodis served - not your average pub

grub, but a classier kind of fare:pork-belly and sirloin, nut-roastfor vegetarians. Were trying togive people different reasons tovisit, explains manager and co-owner Senan Sexton. Thats veryimportant if youre not located ina big urban hub.

With pub closures still promi-nent in the minds of those relianton the health of the sector, it doeswell to pay heed to the nature ofthe pubs actually opening duringthis troubled time. In thisrespect, the fact that TheBohemia took over a site in 2013which had once been an ailingoutlet of the Irish pub-chainONeills - a venue our erstwhiletime-travelling punter wouldhave identified with immedi-ately - may well be telling.

For Sexton, who also operatesThe Bull in nearby Highgatethrough his business The London

Brewing Company, The Bohemiaaims to serve a higher purposethan that of a mere drinking-hole.

Were a community pub, saysSexton. Were trying to fill a gapfor our particular area and pro-vide people with somewhere tomeet - rather than just a place todrink.

It might surprise some to dis-cover that this includes playingamusements machines. A StarTrek pinball machine operates inone corner. A coin-op table-foot-ball game is in another.

We had places which wewanted to fill with somethingother than tables - something thatwould create a bit of atmosphere,Sexton explains. It gives a differ-ent vibe to the place.

The fact that in this instanceamusement took precedenceover tables is a crucial endorse-ment for amusement stakehold-ers: as The Bohemia, and venueslike it, increasingly look to be thenew face of the British pub.

And here theres further goodnews, because foremost amongstSextons goals is to make TheBohemia a fun place for peopleto visit.

Were all about people havinga good time and going home andremembering the night out theyhad, he tells us. Were an enter-tainment zone for adults - we pro-vide a reason to get out of yourhouse rather than stay at homewatching Eastenders.

Amusement providers takenote: the British pub is changing, and it wants to have fun.
