Cognition denotes to acts or processes involved in
the acquisition, transformation, retrieval, and use of
knowledge.
Cognition is often set in contrast to affect.
Using a computer metaphor, cognition refers to the
manipulation of symbolic information in a processing
system, such as a computer or the human brain.

Four major approaches to the study of cognitive processes:
Experimental cognitive psychology: Experimental methods, mostly in the laboratory;
Cognitive science: Use of computational methods in order to simulate cognitive processes;
Cognitive neuropsychology: Examination of patients with brain damage;
Cognitive neuroscience: Use of brain mapping techniques.
