Fifty years ago Norm Coghlan founded Coghlan’s Ltd. with the Camp Stove Toaster, establishing the foundation for what would become the largest single brand of camping accessories in the world. Prior to

forming his own company, Norm Coghlan sold lanterns, camp stoves, lamps, mantles and parts primarily to the hardware market in the United States and Canada. In 1959, he bought a small service depot in downtown Winnipeg, Manitoba,

Canada and operated it as a private company. At that time, the newly born Coghlan’s Gas Appliances concentrated on the natural gas heating market that was opening up in Winnipeg. Norm Coghlan also added camping equipment such as tents, sleeping bags and air mattresses. There were many campers that would come in to bring their camp stoves and lanterns in for repair and they also bought and rented other camping equipment and accessories as well. Norm was aware that customers wanted a way to make toast on their pump-up gasoline camp stove. Such an item was already being manufactured by a U.S. based company and they sold very readily in Coghlan’s retail store. After inquiring with the toaster manufacturer, Norm found out that the toaster was being discontinued. Norm bought the entire inventory, rented a storage facility and this began Coghlan’s distribution of camping accessories. Coghlan’s then began building its line of quality camping accessories, facilitating people’s outdoor enjoyment across the globe. As popularity grew for the accessories over the years, we added a central warehouse in St. Paul, Minnesota, in addition to our Winnipeg, Manitoba warehouse - eventually shipping to 30 countries worldwide. Today, we are the leading outdoor accessory supplier in United States and Canada and distribute over 450 accessories throughout the United States, Canada, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia.

To keep up with demand, we teamed up many years ago with Opportunity Partners in the US and Versatech

Industries in Canada, two companies that offer packaging, assembly and fulfillment by people with disabilities. Coghlan’s was Opportunity Partners’ first large client and today is their oldest. This partnership has made it possible for people with disabilities to earn wages and prosper in the community for more than 40 years. It is this relationship that sets us apart, allowing us to give back to our community and provide meaningful work to those who take great pride in a job well done. In the early 1980’s, and realizing the importance of brand consistency and the resulting increase in point-of-purchase accessory sales, Coghlan’s chose to use its iconic outdoor color combination of green and yellow for their packaging. This served three main purposes: distinguish the brand from our competitors, highlight the products’ outdoor functionality and generate consistent consumer recognition and recall. Our familiar packaging invokes consumers memories to recall past experiences while camping—like roasting marshmallows over an open fire, or smelling the aroma of breakfast in the morning as bread toasts on the Camp Stove Toaster. We wanted to give back to the source of these memories—“the great outdoors”.

allowing people with special needs and disabilities a chance to assist with the assembly and packaging of Coghlan’s camping accessories.

This helps thousands of people with disabilities live independently, thus leading to increased self-sufficiency

and more productive lives.

We have kept our yellow and green trademark colors, continuing the tradition of Coghlan’s familiar look. A new yet subtle update to the packaging photography and typeface are laid over a base image of recycled board stock, further reinforcing our look to be synonymous with the outdoors. This new appearance is not just skin deep, we are using sustainable packaging materials and provide written statements on the packaging to encourage recycling when it is no longer needed. We have decreased the dimensions of packages

where appropriate to better match it to the product size. Additionally, we are eliminating plastic wherever possible, to ensure that the packaging can be fully recycled or reused. Coghlan’s

is addressing the environmental impact in the design stage, thereby creating new packaging that looks great and recycles into the proper waste streams where it can be recaptured and used again, keeping it “out” of the outdoors. By keeping our products simple and easy to use, we have become a worldwide leader in the outdoor accessories. Moving forward we will continue to be mindful of the “less is more” mentality. While celebrating a late night baseball victory and not being able to distinguish the beverages in their cooler, Canadian native Linda Pond and her daughter Rhonda Puckett decided they were done being left in the dark. The pitcher-catcher duo determined their cooler, like their refrigerator at home, needed a light source.

After employing some local engineers, Linda took their Cooler Light prototype to the outdoor accessories experts at Coghlan’s Ltd. Coghlan’s agreed to refine the light and help the ladies market their invention worldwide.

The result is a single LED light reflected through an acrylic lens and secured to the underside of the cooler lid with double side adhesive tape. The light is designed to shine automatically when the lid is raised and to turn off when the cooler is closed.
