In this issue of Code Red, Wendi Tamariska gives us apersonal account of his trip to London for The WhitleyFund for Nature Award Ceremony at the start of themonth. I am so proud of him and the whole GPOCPteam that earned this 'Green Oscar' award. Then, weare introduced to Tori Bakley, our new researchassistant, who shares her experiences getting to knowthe rainforests of Borneo that she's dreamed aboutvisiting since she was a child.
Our sidebar articles introduce the new baby of GunungPalung National Park, the 2019 Bornean OrangutanCaring Scholarship signing ceremony, my NAT GEO LIVEtalks with Tim Laman, and the Remembering GreatApes book from the Remembering Wildlife book seriesthat raises both awareness and funds for great apeconservation.
We are also excited to announce two recent journalpublications! Former Program Director, Cassie Freund, along with myself and GPOCP's education staff, published an article in Animal Conservation about theimpacts of our environmental education program and Ipublished, along with my graduate students andIndonesian research staff and counterparts, an articlei n Scientific Reports about a possible case ofinfanticide with Wahlimah's previous infant.

The Warmth of LondonBy Wendi Tamariska, GPOCP Sustainable LivelihoodsManager I never imagined that I would one day see this city. Aniconic metropolis with an advanced culture that isvery different from where I come from in WestKalimantan. But I am incredibly grateful to havereceived the opportunity to visit London, England, as arecipient of the 2019 Whitley Fund for Nature Award.
The Whitley Fund for Nature Award ceremonybrochure- with our very own Tim Laman's photo of anorangutan from Gunung Palung National Park on the
cover!
When I first flew in to London, I was quite impressedwith the layout of the city when I saw it from the air;it was so compact. And when I first left the airportbuilding, I was greeted with such cold air that itoverwhelmed me! It was only around 10 - 15 °C, verycold for an Indonesian! In addition, I was not properlydressed considering I had just traveled 21 hours fromtropical Jakarta. The overwhelming sensation of thecold air quickly vanished in the warm welcome that Ireceived from my colleagues in London. Warm hugsand shining smiles made me feel instantly at ease.

difference from the tropical rainforests of Borneo, butI thoroughly enjoyed seeing some of London's treasures- especially it's historical buildings and castles. I wasalso able to visit the Natural History Museum, hundredsof years old but still beautifully maintained and a busyhub for activity.
The large gardens on almost every corner of the citywere also quite impressive. These parks offer aperfect place for recreation and for people tosocialize. Road infrastructure, public transportationand even facilities for people with disabilities are alldesigned to make life easier for pedestrians, motoristsand cyclists. Surprisingly, I did not witness even onetraffic jam because everyone actually stops at a redlight!

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my trip to London and Iam extremely honored and grateful to the WhitleyFund for their support. Now that I am back inKetapang, I am looking forward to getting started onmaking an even bigger impact on orangutanconservation!
Fulfilling My Dreams in BorneoBy Tori Bakley, GPOCP Research Assistant
My name is Tori Bakley, and I am a recent graduatefrom Florida State University and the new volunteerresearch assistant with GPOCP! I have had a specialinterest in orangutans and the rainforests of Borneosince I first learned about them on the Animal PlanetTV channel when I was 10 years old. Since then, my
interest in orangutans and Bornean biodiversity hasonly grown. Like the wonderful umbrella species theyare, my curiosity about orangutans led to me learningabout other Bornean species, like slow lorises, glidingfrogs, dipterocarp trees, and hornbills. To me, itseemed as though the most enchanting and impressivespecies resided within the coasts of this giant island, and it has been my goal to come here and see themwith my own eyes.
Tori Bakely helping inventory botanical samples in thelab at Cabang Panti Research Station.
I arrived in Indonesia on January 13th, two days aftermy 22nd birthday, and have spent the last four monthsat Cabang Panti Research Station in Gunung PalungNational Park. The forests are incredible and I couldexplore them all day (and some days I do!). I cannothelp but acknowledge that I expected there to be a lotmore wild spaces and local biodiversity in Borneo thanthere is outside of the national park. In the small townof Ketapang, where the GPOCP office is located, wildlife is sparse and primarily found in the local cityforest and in other protected spaces. Most specieshave been pushed out of their natural ranges, andeven the density of species within the national park ismuch smaller than it would be if the edges of the parkwere not so distinct. It starkly points out theimportance of protecting the remaining wildlife andforests of Borneo.
An avid bird enthusiast, Tori has an excellent eye andmanaged to get a beautiful shot of this juvenile BrownWood Owl (Strix leptogrammica) while out searching
for orangutans.
In Gunung Palung National Park, the trees stretch highinto the sky and their branches are commonly adornedwith hornbills, gliding lizards, and giant squirrels.Lianas drape across the trails and often providesupport while crossing rivers and stepping acrosspneumatophores in the peat swamp. Mushroomssprout in the most surprising shapes, colors, andformations, and some even make the forest floor glowin the dark. Every day I see something that I havenever seen before.
Tori has enthusiasm for all the creatures in the forestand this photo with her amphibious friend was quite
popular on Indonesian social media! Photos credit ToriBakley.
I have another 7 months left to explore the forests ofGunung Palung and the creatures that dwell within. Sofar this experience has been a dream and I love that Iget to call Borneo home!
