POETRY AND MEMORY with
JORGE MIGUEL COCOM PECH
Jorge Cocom Pech was born in Calkini, Campeche, Mexico. He has
published poetry, narratives, and essays in the Mayan peninsular
language as well as Spanish.
In 2005 he received the International Prize for Poetry awarded
by the International Eastern-Western Academy in Romania. He will
read fragments from Muk’ult’an in Nool, Grandfather’s Secrets, a
text that captures the traditional oral narrative inherited from
his ancestors. He will also share from his work, Yáajal píik sáase
or The Waking of Dawn, a poetic work that received a fellowship
from the National Fund for Culture and Art in 1997-98 and the BANFF
International Center.
His poetry has been translated into many languages, French,
Greek, Romanian, Catalan, Russian, Italian, Serbian, English,
Czech, Hebrew, German, and Portuguese. Muk’ult’an in Nool,
Grandfather’s Secrets was translated into French by Ricardo Rueda
as Les Secrets de l’aïeul in 2007.
Jorge Cocom Pech will share
