How to study for a Spelling Bee?

Many students ask this question every year. Well, it is really

much simpler than you might think. The best way to become an

incredible speller is to READ! Read a variety of books. When

you come across a word you are not sure about, look up the

definition. Try using these words in conversation or in your

writing.

Next, remember that a spelling bee is a performance. This is

going to sound silly, but get in front of people and practice!

The Scripps National Spelling Bee suggests study about roots

of words. Look online for sites that discuss “roots,” “word

history,” or “etymology.” Familiarize yourself with Greek and

Latin roots. Learn to pronounce random words you don’t know.

An online dictionary with audio can help with this task.

There are some great word websites online to practice and play

around with words. Just to name a few, check out Merriam-

Webster’s Word Central at http://wordcentral.com and Merriam-

Webster’s Spell It! at http://www.myspellit.com.

Please find a list of books that the Scripps National Spelling

Bee suggests you read to prepare for our spelling bee. Your

homeroom class bee will be Oct. 22-Nov. 2. If you are one

of the top two spellers in your homeroom, you will advance to

the vocabulary bee on Nov. 26-30. The top 25 from the vo-

cabulary round will advance to the final oral bee to determine

our school’s representative on Dec. 12. Good Luck!

1. What Halloween candy was originally called “chicken feed”? Candy Corn, of course. Over 35

million pounds of candy corn is produced each year.

2. What Halloween song by Bobby Pickett topped the Billboard charts in 1962? “Monster

Mash.” The "Monster Mash" single was #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart on October 20–

27, 1962, just before Halloween. It has been a perennial holiday favorite ever since.

3. What supernatural creature in Latin American folklore is said to drink the blood of chickens

and goats? El Chupacabra. Chupacabra actually means “goat-sucker.”

4. According to superstition, what happens if you point at a grave? It is bad luck to point at a

grave. You also should not whistle in a graveyard unless you want to summons the Devil.

5. What is Dr. Frankenstein’s first name in Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel Frankenstein? Dr. Victor

Frankenstein. Mary Shelley was just 21 years-old when the first edition of this novel was

printed.

Congratulations to Emily Hunt from Mrs. Sturgeon’s homeroom for winning last

week’s trivia challenge. (Chosen by a random drawing of correct answers.)

We hope you enjoyed the Halloween Trivia Contest!

Stay tuned for more contests to come!

Important Message

from the Cafeteria

Students are NOT allowed to bring glass items to

school in their lunch boxes. Already this year, we have

had a couple of incidences of glass containers

shattering on the cafeteria’s floor.

Thank you for your assistance with this matter

of safety.
