Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who is also President J&K Sports Council, presented Sher-i-Kashmir Sports Awards to 34 outstanding sports persons for their performance and winning medals at the National and the International levels from 2003-04 to 2009-10, here yesterday. However, the awardees claim that they were left high and dry by the Council today when they were asked to make their own arrangement for stay in Jammu. “We were kept waiting for receiv- ing our dues at the office of the Council till 4 pm today and later asked either to return back or stay in Jammu on our own expenses," one of the sports person from Kashmir, who was awarded here yesterday, told Greater Kashmir. The Council was even accused of picking up the sports persons of their own choice, while ignoring the genu- ine claimants. “As per the category fixed by the Council, I should have been awarded for the first or second category but instead I was simply conferred with the Consolation prize”, Mehjabeena Akhtar, a prominent snow skier, who represented the State and India at various levels since 2005, said. She claimed as per the citation, received by her, she represented the State in National Winter Games Cham- pionship from 2005 to 2010 and won 8 silver and 3 bronze medals. She also rep- resented the Country in South Asian Winter Games at Dehradun in 2011, Asian Games in Kazakhastan and Salvic Cup in Czech Republican 2009. However, many of her achievements were not even referred in the citation, which she claimed was a deliberate move making her in-eligible to receive the first or second category award. “The Council officials said that it was a mistake. They have now given a certificate showing that I represented the County in FIS Cross Country Races held in Turkey in March 2007, again in 2008 and won Bronze Medal in South Asian Winter Games at Dehradun in 2011”. “This was a share injustice”, said Akhtar adding, “Surprisingly the sportsperson, who was conferred the first category award had participated in the same event in 2011 but was shown to have participated in 2010”. “This was again a deliberate move in order to ensure that the said person gets the award”. Rana for promoting rural sports in JK Jammu, Apr 17: The ruling National Conference (NC) today called for focused atten- tion towards rural sports and regretted that it was not get- ting its due attention. “Like other parts of the country, Jammu and Kashmir too has a tradition of organis- ing rural sports on special occa- sions, coinciding with various festivals”, said NC provincial President Devendra Singh Rana, but observed that the trend was dwindling fast. Rana gave away the 29th Vishal Dangal Saloora Kesri award to Pahalwan Binyia of Jammu and Kashmir Police, who won the title by defeating R C Singh of Haryana Police. Presence of reputed and eminent wrestles of North India was a source of inspira- tion for budding wrestlers of the region, Rana said adding, "I hope they will learn from veterans in the field." Referring to the steps ini- tiated by the government for promotion of sports in rural and far off areas, he said, "The idea is to provide larger canvass to the rural youth for demonstrating their talent." Expressing satisfaction over the enthusiasm of rural youth in traditional games like Kabadi and Wrestling Rana added, "We have to maintain this momen- tum by giving fillip to these activities in a big way." Mishra (4/19) took the wickets with his second, fourth, fifth and sixth deliv- eries off his final over as Warriors were bowled out for 108 in 19 overs while chasing a mediocre target of 120 runs. The partisan crowd at the Subrata Roy Sahara Stadium was stunned into disbelief as Pune slumped from 101 for four in the 17th over to 108 all out in 19 overs as Mishra got his third hat-trick over the last six editions of the cash- rich league. It was an inexplicable col- lapse as the home team lost as many as six wickets for seven runs in a space of 13 balls. Mishra, who had earlier played a useful knock of 30, came into bowl the 19th over of the innings with Warriors needing 14 runs off 12 deliveries with four wickets in hand. First it was skipper Angelo Mathews (20), who was fooled by a flighted delivery as he holed out in the deep. While Bhuvneshwar was trapped leg before, Rahul and Dinda were clean bowled as they misread the wrong’un. A target of 120 was cer- tainly not a difficult one as Robin Uthappa (22, 14 balls, 4x4) and Aaron Finch (16, 13 balls, 3x4) hit seven boundar- ies in the first four overs to relieve the pressure from the rest of the batsmen. Although Thisara Perera dismissed Uthappa and Finch off successive deliveries, the target was always within reach of the home team. However, the likes of Steven Smith (17), Mathews and Mitchell Marsh (14) all looked like getting set before playing some horrible shots when the match was there for Warriors to lose.
