We also had a number of teams parcipate at Leetonia for regionals. Congratulaons to our 5th and 8th grade DI teams as they have advanced to state compeon. The next stop for these teams will be Beaver Local.

Destination Imagination

We had a very busy month with Des na on Imagina on. On January 24th,Columbiana Middle School hosted a DI Instant Challenge Night for areaschools. Chloe Gill Becomes 2019CMS Spelling Bee Champion

On February 5, 2019 we had our CMS SpellingBee.

Congratulations to Chloe Gill on her 1st placefinish, our runner-up Mandy Allman, 2nd runner-up Connor McCusker, and 3rd runner-up SarahOwens. These four students will representColumbiana Middle School at the countyspelling bee on March 6th.

All of our spelling be participants should beproud!

John Rhodes Qualifies forState Geography Bee

For the second year in a row, JohnRhodes has qualified for the stategeography bee.

After winning the CMS geography beefor the second year in a row, Johndecided to take the state geographybee qualifying exam. John Rhodes hasqualified, making him eligible tocompete at the state geography beeon March 29th. Students will competefor a $1,000 cash prize and a trip toWashington, D.C.

Cold & Flu Season is Here

Please do not send your child to school if they havea temperature of 99.4 or above.

Your child must be fever-free and have not vomitedwithin a 24-hour period before returning to school.

Practice these preventative measures:1. Avoid close contact with people who are sick.2. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing.3. Washing your hands often will help protect you from germs. If soap and waterare not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.4. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.5. Practice other good health habits. Clean and disinfect frequently touchedsurfaces at home, especially when someone is ill. Get plenty of sleep, bephysically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritiousfood.

Remember to call our attendance line at 330-482-5354when your child will not be in attendance.

Also remember to send a written excuse or adoctor’s excuse upon their return.

Gilder Lehrman Institute has selected Mrs.Brown to attend the The George Washington'sTeacher Institute seminar "Leadership andLegacy: Lessons from George Washington" atMount Vernon, VA from June 11th- 15th. Mrs.Brown was awarded a full scholarship whichincludes a travel stipend, room/board, meals,and all program fees. This competitivescholarship was available to schools andteachers nationwide and the Gilder Lehrman

Institute has 21,000 affiliate schools and had over 4,000 applicants for theteacher seminars.

The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History is the leading nonprofitorganization dedicated to K–12 history education while also serving the generalpublic. The Institute’s mission is to promote the knowledge and understanding ofAmerican history through educational programs and resources.

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archivesin American history. Drawing on the 70,000 documents in the Gilder LehrmanCollection and an extensive network of eminent historians, the Institute providesteachers, students, and the general public with direct access to unique primary

6th Grade Students Skype with Author

Students had the opportunity to chat with an author though Skype in their ELAclass. Special thanks to Mrs. Martin and author Laura Shovan for taking the timeto read a portion of her book and answer as many questions as our studentshad. What a tremendous experience for our students.

Keeping Students Safe

Columbiana Middle School hasimplemented the "schoolSAFEid"system. Please remember to bringyour driver's license with you whensigning in at the school.

Congratulations to Columbiana Middle School ELA Students on their READBowlState Championship! This competition is through Read with Malcolm - afoundation that Malcolm Mitchell, a former college and professional football playerstarted. Students read his picture book at the beginning of the year and watcheda short video about how he challenged himself to become a better reader. He's ahuge advocate for reading now.

This contest started on the day of the College Football National Championshipand ended on the Super Bowl.

Columbiana County Art Show

CMS students represented us well at the Columbiana County Art Show. The artshow was held on February 28th at the CCCTC and displayed art work fromstudents throughout the county.

Gearing Up For State Testing

The district-wide state testing window opens on Monday, March 25th, with ELAtesting. Math, Science, and Social Studies testing will overlap with ELA testingand begins on Monday, April 1st. Testing runs through April 23rd. It is extremelyhelpful for students to be here on their testing dates rather than during scheduledmake-up testing dates. Please, if at all possible, avoid vacation requests duringthese dates. If you have any questions regarding specific testing dates for yourchild, please contact the office.

CMS Clipper Products

made up of a small group of 8th gradestudents with the innovation and desireto promote Clipper Pride at CMS. Wecreated a business model andpresented our idea to Mr. Martin at thestart of the year. He approved of ourproject and has assisted with a loanfrom the principal's fund for some of theneeded items to promote Clipper Pride.

Clipper Products started the year with a locker cling fundraiser (they are stillavailable), and have slowly expanded into clothing. We have made shirts for ourmiddle school choir group, Flight, and plan to design and create shirts forAcademic Challenge and NJHS. We are working on making products that wecan sell to even more people in the near future.

Columbiana Middle School Winter Sports

Our students participating in wrestling and basketball this past winter hadwonderful seasons.

Our CMS basketball teams had great regular seasons with very respectablerecords:

7th Grade Girls Basketball: 13-48th Grade Girls Basketball: 10-57th Grade Boys Basketball: 11-68th Grade Boys Basketball: 7-10

All four teams played well in thetournament games. A number of our6th grade students had the opportunityto play at the state tournament inColumbus and placed 3rd.

Students are now gearing up for the track. We are looking forward to a wonderfulspring sports season.

Columbiana Power Meet

This past Saturday, March 2, 2019, Columbiana held the annual Middle SchoolPower Meet. Out of the total number of 68 athletes who participated within thismeet, Columbiana Middle School entered 21 lifters made up of our current 6th, 7th

and 8t h grade students. As a team, CMS pulled together to lift a total weight of

8,320 pounds! We are very proud of all of our students who participated in themeet and could not be happier with the results that we have seen. SinceDecember, our student-athletes have been working very hard to improve theirweight lifting abilities. As a team, we have taken enormous strides since thebeginning of our lifting program.
