Clusius Correspondence Online Accessible through Leiden University Digital Special Collections: http://disc.leidenuniv.nl The Digital Special Collections repository contains, amongst many other objects, the digitised images of the letters to and by Carolus Clusius which are kept in Leiden University Library, plus references (but no images) to letters from and to Clusius that are known at present (2006) in other European libraries. The collection contains nearly 1,300 letters exchanged with some 300 correspondents. The database can be searched for several categories; sender, receiver, place, date, language, etc. The letters have been scanned in a high resolution, and the images can be viewed on screen or downloaded (in Windows: by right-clicking on the images). If editions or transcriptions are known to exist, a reference can be found in the relevant record. In some cases digital images of copies or transcriptions of letters from other collections have also been included. The contents of this database will be extended and corrected in the course of the Clusius Research Project (2005-2009). We eventually aim to include references to all extant Clusius letters (originals and editions) in libraries and archives in Europe. A general manual is available under the Help button in the database. There you can find detailed information about search possibilities (command language, truncation, Boolean operators, advanced search, etc.) and functions such as saving records. The database contains scans of some 1,000 letters in JPEG2000 format and 1,200 letters in JPEG format. Most of these scans show the original letters preserved in Leiden University Library. Every part of the original letter has been digitized, including the page showing the address, written pages, addenda presenting lists of plant names or drawings, as well as blank pages.

Clusius Correspondence Online

Accessible through Leiden University Digital Special Collections: http://disc.leidenuniv.nl

The Digital Special Collections repository contains, amongst many other objects, the digitised images of the letters to and by Carolus Clusius which are kept in Leiden University Library, plus references (but no images) to letters from and to Clusius that are known at present (2006) in other European libraries.

For each letter the database presents the following information:

Sender

This field contains the name of the sender of the letter(s): either Clusius himself or one of his correspondents.

Recipient

This field contains the name of the recipient of the letter(s), either Clusius himself or one of his correspondents.

Date of sending

This field indicates the period in which the correspondence took place or the date of a specific letter.

Note that dates can be in old or new style (which is not always clear from the letters), and that some dates are unclear and may need correcting.

Place of sending

This field indicates the place where the letter was written and/or sent.

If additional information about transcriptions, photocopies or editions was available, this is presented in the annotation field. In the future, we would like to add abstracts of the contents of the letters, short biographical information about the correspondents, and scans of the letters which are kept in other libraries in Europe.

In addition to the records that describe individual letters, the database also contains records that contain information about a certain correspondent: the total number of (known) letters he or she wrote to Clusius, the language in which these letters are written, the years spanned by the correspondence, etc. The annotation field of the correspondence record offers alternative spelling of the correspondent’s name. In the future biographical information about this correspondent will also be included here.
