From the Director’s Desk
These are exciting times here at clubhouse. In September, we officially kicked off our Young
Adult Transition program with our first student member, Pablo R. If you have not had the
opportunity to meet Pablo yet, please stop by and give him a warm Clubhouse welcome. Susan
and Mykesha have been working very hard to spread the word about this program to our local
schools and community.
Coming up this month, for the first time ever, the Clubhouse of Lehigh County will be
participating in the Allentown Halloween parade. We are going to need as many people as
possible to march with us to show the strength of our membership and program. Please see
Clubhouse staff if you need any information about participating in this activity.
We are also in need of some fresh ideas for Thursday and Saturday activities. Unfortunately, we
have had to cancel many of the activities in the last couple of months due to lack of
participation. If you have some ideas about how to generate participation in these activities or if
you have ideas for new activities, please share them. The next community meeting will be on
Wed., Oct. 4, 2017 at 1:45. If you cannot attend, drop off your suggestions in the Suggestions
box or email one of our staff members.
There continue to be many other great things going on at Clubhouse.
Susan A. recently ended her nutrition class and will be starting a knitting club. Ed B. will be
heading a Tai Chi group and the 3H unit will be hosting a hot dog fundraiser on 10/7/2017 to
generate funds to pay for their unit t-shirts. Our Clubhouse will once again be collaborating with
the Drop-In Center to have an informative table at the Harvest Full of Hope on 10/20/2017. If
you are interesting in working at our table to spread the word about our Clubhouse or if you
would like to participate in the Seminars, please register online. If you need transportation
please sign up in the activities book at Clubhouse.
Finally, we are now on Facebook. Please like our page, share our
information, and spread the word about Clubhouse.

limited imagination. Never limit others
because of your own limited imagination.”

UNIT NEWS AND UPDATES
3H (Holistic, Health, Hospitality):
Many members are starting to come back to
our Clubhouse. Thanks to a great effort from
our staff and our new Director. The
members are also encouraging new members
in completing their daily tasks and joining
them in different activity events in the unit.
It’s a great new journey getting to know old
and new members as well. The 3H unit has
worked very hard on training and
assisting others with daily tasks such as
selling at our snack bar; thanks to Joe
Roman for his time and dedication, also we
are thankful for members that are willing to
show our new members where and how a
daily task is done. We are very proud of
reaching the ones that are going through
difficult times or illness through our
reach-out calls; our goal is to make at least
ten calls a day. Thanks to the collaboration
of the BTU that is always providing those
beautiful greeting cards; thanks to Don and
Jolene. We are getting ready for our
fundraiser in the month of October. Cynthia
has done an outstanding job on helping the
members with their resumes and applying
for employment opportunities!
Please keep giving ideas and coming to our
programs. Flor is still having her Baking
Class every Friday from 1:45pm to 2:45 pm.
And we are noticing lots of talent and
creativity on all baking goods for the season
and much more. We are noticing lots of
talent and creativity on the 2 C U Create Art
class on Tuesdays and Thursdays from
1:45pm to 3 pm. Please join us in the
multipurpose room.

BTU (Business Technology Unit):
The BTU has been busy lately trying to “kick it
up a notch” by encouraging our members to help
us find new Work Ordered DayDuties that seem
interesting and motivating to our unit. In
response, we are happy to announce two new
clubs created by our members: Close Knit Club,
where Susan A will lead us in learning how to
knit a washcloth or scarf; and Ed B will be
leading us in Tai Chi with Ed. We are all looking
forward to these classes beginning and learning
something new.
We are driven to increasing the employment/job
postings for the house. We are posting new jobs
every week in the bin on our wall in the BTU.
We are here to support our members in finding
employment, and would like an opportunity to
help regarding the search, resume writing, and
coaching if needed.
Lastly, we would like everyone’s help creating a
new banner for the BTU featuring our WOD with
pictures of members in the process of working, as
well as helping us create a mural for the HUB.
Our Clubhouse Brochure is in need of updating,
so this will be our unit project until completion.
We can’t wait to partner with our unit members
in accomplishing all these exciting projects.

Current Events By Ben K.
The southern U.S. was battered by two major storms in less than a month: Hurricane Harvey
over eastern Texas and Louisiana, and Hurricane Irma over the U.S. Virgin Islands, Florida and beyond.
Harvey was the first major hurricane to make landfall in the United States since 2005, touching down in
Texas on Aug. 25. Harvey is the wettest tropical hurricane on record in the contiguous United States,
with peak accumulations of 51.88” of rainfall. The resulting floods displaced more than 30,000 people,
and prompted more than 17,000 rescues. 300,000 people were left without electricity and billions of
dollars of property damage was sustained. As of September 6, at least 69 fatalities had been confirmed.
Hurricane Irma was the most intense Atlantic hurricane to strike the country since Katrina in
2005, initially striking the Florida Keys on Sept. 10. Irma caused widespread damage, particularly in
parts of the northeastern Caribbean. Its long duration caused it to impact a large geographical area, but
as it tracked westward and weakened in intensity the resulting damage was not as severe as expected in
many areas of Florida, although up to 13 million people were temporarily left without power.
The aftermath of Harvey became known for acts of kindness from volunteers who showed up to
help neighbors clean out waterlogged homes, donated needed supplies and used boats to rescue people
trapped in isolated areas. Crime and opportunism was a relative non-factor compared to the chaotic days
after Hurricane Katrina. Some attributed the strong community spirit to the fact that Houston is one of
the nation’s most racially diverse cities, with a mix of newcomers and native Texans. Corporations
across the nation collectively donated more than $72 million to relief efforts, adding to efforts by the
American Red Cross, Salvation Army, Humane Society, Catholic Charities USA, AmeriCares and many
other groups and individuals. Bucking GOP leadership, President Trump made a deal with congressional
Democrats to add at least $7.9 billion in Harvey relief to a bill to raise the federal debt ceiling and fund
the government through early December.
STANDARD OF THE MONTH The International Standards for Clubhouse Programs,
consensually agreed upon by the Worldwide Clubhouse
Community, define the Clubhouse Model of Rehabilitation.
The Standards also serve as a “bill of rights” for members and a code
of ethics for staff, board, and administrators.
The Standards insist that a Clubhouse is a place that offers
respect and opportunity to its members.
Relationships
STANDARD #11
Responsibility for the operation of the Clubhouse lies with the members and staff and ulti-
mately with the Clubhouse director. Central to this responsibility is the engagement of
members and staff in all aspects of Clubhouse operation.

What Does It Mean? By Travis T.
Responsibility is the one main key motivator for individuals to achieve goals and to lead a
good, healthy and happy life. To me it’s about people working with each other one day at a
time through mutual understandings and responsibility of performing tasks/duties to achieve
a common outcome for the greater good of the Clubhouse.

My New Jersey Experience
By Ken H.
I left my house at 7am to catch an 8:30am bus, figuring I had plenty of time. The 102 bus
took a while to arrive. I assumed wrongly that it would leave me off by the Allentown bus
terminal. Instead, the bus made a left turn onto 4th street. I had to walk from 4th Street and
turned to the bus terminal. By doing so, I missed the 8:30 bus. I had to wait for the 10:40 bus.
My phone died, so I couldn't contact my sister-in-law to let her know what was going on. I
arrived In NJ around 1PM. Naturally my sister-in-law was long gone. I had to catch a bus to
Elizabeth. From there I had to catch a bus to Linden. The bus fare to Linden was $1.10. I had
the 10 cents but I had no singles. Fortunately the driver let me on. Once I got to Linden I had to
walk almost a mile to my family's house. I finally got there around three o’ clock. What an
experience!
Health Tip of the Month By Ben K.
Remember to drink enough water. Fluid losses
occur continuously, from skin evaporation,
breathing, urine, etc., and these losses must be
replaced for good health. Your body is composed of
about 60% water. Drinking water helps maintain the
balance of body fluids. The functions of these bodily
fluids include digestion, absorption, circulation,
creation of saliva, transportation of nutrients, and
maintenance of body temperature. Water can help
control calories. Water also can help energize
muscles and keep your kidneys functioning properly.
Finally, water also helps keep skin looking good.
Remember that other liquids, as well as fruits and
vegetables, also count towards your water intake.
Clubhouse Young Adult Transition Program (CYATP)
Our young adult transition program is moving forward,
slowly, and we are asking for our members help! If any of
you know of a young adult, 18-21, who is still a student, and
lives in Lehigh County and is diagnosed with a mental
illness, please let them know about our program. Word of
mouth and your own experience shared on how we are a
valuable resource, is our best method of reaching out. Let
your family, neighbors or any of your contacts know about
us. Tell them to call the Clubhouse at (610) 433-9910 and we
will take it from there.
