Welcome to the July edition of Club Journal. On page 14, we have our latest Q&A with
a member of the NEC. This time around, wespeak to Durham Branch Secretary GeorgeSmith about his background in the CIU andhis hopes for the future of Union clubs.
Meanwhile, this month we also profileSaltburn House in North Yorkshire. As mostUnion members will know, it was formerly aCIU Convalescent Home but it is nowowned by Hayes WMC who have turned itinto a club and holiday centre.
As you’ll read in the article, Hayes WMChas made a significant investment in thebuilding and put in a lot of hard work intorevitalising the venue with the result that it’snow very popular with local people, as wellas those coming from further afield whowant to stay in such a nice part of thecountry.
It has certainly been a busy time insporting terms lately with the action fromEuro 2016 showing on many club screensand there have also been several CIU finalstaking place in recent months.
Many congratulations to: Buffs SocialClub, Stockton-on-Tees who won the CIUTeam Snooker Championship; MerthyrTydfil Labour Club who won the CIU TeamDarts Championship and BannockburnMiners Club who won the CIU Team PoolChampionship.
Talking of sport, a date to make a note ofin your diary is Saturday November 12which is CIU National Charity Raceday atWetherby Racecourse.

CompetitionYORK BRANCH CELEBRATES 70 YEARS OFITS GROUNDBREAKING QUIZ LEAGUE
NEWS IN BRIEF
A meeting of the Education Section of YorkCity Branch of the CIU, held on September25th 1946, decided to form a quiz contestwhich attracted so many entries that a QuizLeague was formed consisting of 20 teamsfor its inaugural season.
It is still going strong – and indeed, isrecognised in the Guinness Book ofRecords as the oldest quiz league inBritain– and recently celebrated its 70thyear with a special event hosted byTramways WMC attended by severaldignitaries, including the RightHonourable, the Lord Mayor of York,Councillor Sonja Crisp; the Sherriff ofYork, Mr Brian Smith and George DawsonCMD, President of the CIU.
Paul Monroe, Secretary of the QuizLeague, began proceedings by welcomingthe dignitaries, players and guests to thecelebratory evening and a response wasgiven by the Lord Mayor, who offered her,and the City’s, congratulations to theLeague on its service to the community, itslongevity and also her, and York CityCouncil’s, best wishes and hopes for acontinued successful future.
Very bravely, the Lord Mayor’s party hadagreed to put forward a team to take part inthe celebrations but added the codicil thatthey were not quizzers. Their opponentswere drawn at random from the audience.
Sadly, it was not to be a successfulventure for the Civic Party, as the LordMayor’s team faced a team captained by aLeague stalwart, Tim Broadbent andcomprised some of the best quizzers in theleague, who ran out fairly comfortablewinners.
The next match proved to be a closerencounter between randomly drawn quizplayers who formed two teams and resultedin the team captained by Paul Smith, ofTramways A, managing to get home by 30points to 28.,
The final proved exciting, even for non-quizzers, and saw Tim Broadbent’s teamwinning by a 31-30 margin over PaulSmith’s team.
A raffle of donated prizes, including a43-inch Smart TV, was held during theevening and and shared between theLeague and the Lord Mayor’s charities, with a total of £175 raised for good causes.
During the course of the evening, theCIU President, George Dawson CMD,presented a special award to DougieNorton who has taken part in the Quizleague for an amazing 64 years.
The evening was sponsored by AONInsurance, Cameo Engraving (York),Dransfields UK and Heineken UK.

CLUB PROFILE
A NEW LEASE OF LIFE FOR SALTBURN HOUSESince Hayes WMC bought Saltburn House on the picturesque North Yorkshire coast in 2014, the formerCIU Convalescent Home has become an extremely popular destination as a club and holiday centre
altburn-by-the-Sea in NorthYorkshire has several historicalclaims to fame. It was where
Malcolm Campbell set his first landspeedworld record in the Blue Bird car in 1922,while Rock icon David Coverdale of DeepPurple and Whitesnake was born and raisedin the seaside resort.
From a CIU point of view though thetown is best known for being the location ofSaltburn House which served for many yearsas one of the Union’s holiday andconvalescent homes until it closed its doorsfor the last time in 2013.
The ownership of this handsomeVictorian building was transferred to HayesWMC the following year and SaltburnHouse is now positively flourishing all yearround as a club and hotel.
The club is situated in extensive groundswith sea views and just a five-minute walk tothe beach, the railway station, shops andrestaurants. In addition, Whitby is close as isRedcar racecourse and Middlesborough FC.
“We spent a significant amount of money
on general refurbishment as the décor was abit tired and needed an uplift but we’ve doneour best to keep the character of thebuilding,” explains Bob Daybell, ClubSecretary of Hayes WMC.
“Business has been very encouraging sofar. The hard bit was always going to begetting local people used to using it as a clubas it was for residents only when it was aCIU convalescent home. We put in a properbar and beer cellar and remodelled theinterior and that helped.
“We’ve signed up loads of members fromthe area but we’ve restructured themembership in a particular way wherethey’re not full members of Hayes WMCand so don’t have any voting rights. They’reinterested in using it as a local facility. But, ofcourse, any CIU member can go there anduse it.
“Running Saltburn House is not asstraightforward as running a Working Men’sClub as you’ve got cooks and cleaners, etc tothink about as well as bar staff. The newmanagers – Andy and Anne Mitchell – are
doing a great job since they came in at thebeginning of the year and everything isgoing in the right direction. I spend a fewdays up there every month but obviously mymain focus is on the London club.”
He continues: “Saltburn-by-the-Sea is anice Victorian town in a lovely part of theworld and Saltburn House is a beautifulbuilding so we’d really like to encouragemore CIU clubs to use it.
“It works really well for coach trips as it’svery reasonable in terms of accommodation, food and drink and there’s regularentertainment laid on. The bar prices are thesame as in Hayes WMC so Saltburn Houseis the cheapest place to drink in the town.
“There’s also plenty to see in the local areaand the clubs who have come up for longweekends or longer stays have really enjoyedthemselves and many of them are alreadyplanning a return trip!
“We bought Saltburn House as aninvestment for the club and it’s always goingto have a sell-on value but it’s great that wecould save a local facility and keep it as

somewhere that CIU clubs and theirmembers can use.”
Managers Andy and Ann Mitchell have astrong club management backgroundhaving spent five and a half years at GreatAyton WMC and three and a half years atOrmesby Club & Institute.
“We loved our previous jobs but as luckwould have it we saw a recruitment ad forSaltburn House in the Club Journal andjumped at the chance,” explains Andy. “I’moriginally from Brotton which is just downthe road and I know all about the club as mymum was a housekeeper in here in the1980s.
“It’s a great club and the members andguests love it. There are 27 rooms in total aswell as a bar, function rooms, kitchens and abeer garden which catches the sun for mostof the day. Our prices are low – £2 for a pintof John Smith’s Magnet, £2.50 for a pint ofTheakston’s and £2.50 for a pint of Foster’s.”
The club certainly attracts a wide range ofcustomers. There is a caravan park justdown the road and their members use theclub as their clubhouse. In addition there arelocals, holidaymakers and CIU memberswho are all drawn to this beautiful part ofthe country and the friendly welcomeoffered by Saltburn House.
Food is also a big part of the club offer.“The introduction of a Sunday carvery hasproved a roaring success,” says Andy. “Fishand Chips Night on a Friday is also popular. All our food is fresh and cooked on thepremises.”
Club Journal visited on a weekend and
business was extremely brisk by Fridayafternoon and got busier and busier untilfull for the Middlesbrough game that theclub was showing on Sky that evening. Theclub has both Sky and BT Sport and isexpecting some great turnouts for England’sgames during Euro 2016.
Post game, the club put on a karaokesession and a new stream of customersarrived to take part in this regular Fridaynight entertainment.
The club has its first wedding booking inSeptember and has also been approached tobe involved in this summer’s Saltburn FoodFestival, a huge event which attracts 15,000people to the town each year.
It would seem that Hayes WMC made avery canny investment when they boughtSaltburn House.

Would it be possible to give myclub some tips on improving ourwine offer to our members?
Paul Waller, Director of Third Party Brands atCrown Cellars (the specialist wine and spiritsdivision of CIU Preferred Supplier CarlsbergUK), responds:
We have just launched our first Future ofOn-Trade Wine report. Conducted withover 1,000 wine consumers and 500 on-trade outlets, country-wide, the aim of theresearch is to uncover whether the on-tradeis meeting customer expectations when itcomes to wine, what is being done well andwhat areas can be improved upon.
Overwhelmingly the research has revealedthat there are two very different groups ofcustomers who have very different attitudestowards wine.
These two groups are differentiated bygenerations: Millennials, or those born inthe 80s – 00s and the rest.
Fundamentally they would both like morechoice and help with navigating wine lists. Both groups would like to feel inspired andenthused to try new wines andunderpinning all of this is a desire forquality, both in terms of the wine itself andthe overall experience.
How these needs are met, however, needsto be tailored in order to recruit millennialsin to wine and engage and retain those over30.
Millennials need to be inspired with astrong visual display in order to competewith other categories such as craft beers andciders and would like to see simple, engagingdescriptors on the wine list.
Currently they don’t feel that there isenough guidance around taste and are beingdiscouraged from exploring the categoryand diversifying.
In contrast, over 30s feel more confidentin their wine choices but they appreciate
wine and food matching recommendationsand are more likely to trade-up ifencouraged to do so.
Overall, the research highlights that thetrade has a more positive view of its wineoffer than customers do. The biggestdisparities are around range (countries andgrape varieties), staff advice, temperature ofwine and presentation.
Wine in the on-trade has developed andevolved significantly in the last decade, but itis clear that there is still some way to go tocatch up with other drinks categories andwith customer expectations.
When you consider that 41 per cent ofwet-led premises still don’t have a wine list, and 28 per cent of on-trade venues don’tthink that wine training is important, thereis still work to be done.
We are looking forward to using theresearch in our report along with ourexperience and knowledge of wine trends tobetter advise and educate the trade.
Key points to take on board whenconsidering your club’s wine offer
39 per cent of customers feel that theirwine is not served cold enough

According to the recent Crown Cellars report, customers want to see a good range of popular grapevarieties at different price points that reflect what they are drinking at home
Smart Energy’s Approved Supplier to the C.I.U have been busy visiting manyClub’s to go through their Stock Audited Accounts with them and wereamazed to find out how so many Club’s were spending over £800 per Monthin beer wastage and line cleaning alone.!
Amy Alvarez from Smart Energy states ‘ Somany Club’s now rely heavily on selling a lotof beer in order to just survive today so thatthey can continue to remain open for theirCommunities so instead of wasting at leasthalf of their beer sales Club’s need to now bethinking more smartly and turn this wastageinto a cash positive and fast.
Our proven Beer Miser has been around forthe past 15 years and is installed into manyC.I.U Club’s and the saving’s have beensomewhat remarkable to say the least. If youare still having to clean your lines on a weekly basis and your wastage isover £600 per month we would like to have a chat to you and advise as tohow we can save you hundreds of pounds each Month.’
Secretary Phil Holmberg from Bournville Social Club in Birmingham was losing a huge £1815.21 per Month on pipe cleaning and beer wastage which wasnoted from his Stock Audited Reports. After opting to installour Beer Miser product ontojust his busy 8 lines withinthe Club we had dropped thisto an amazing £905.73resulting in a total saving of£909 per Month.!
Phil stated’ Our Committee was sceptical at the start as wethought that by going from a weekly clean to then onlycleaning the lines third weekly this would affect the taste of ourbeer but we took the risk as couldn’t ignore the fact that wewere spending far too much on wastage each Month and ourClub are now so glad that we did. The product without doubthas exceeded our expectations in more ways than one andwe couldn’t believe that by just listening to Amy’s advice atSmart Energy and making a simple change we are now over£900 per Month better off. Better still the system had paid foritself in just under 2 Month’s. A no brainer in anyone’s eyes andI have now been referring this product to our neighbouringClub’s who certainly could do with the saving’s like we have.’
Treasurer, Steve Fearon of Barnby Dunn SocialClub in Doncaster took the plunge with hisCommittee and had our system installed onto8 of their busy beer lines as they were wastingover £1600 per Month in pipe cleaningand wastage and were looking at quickpaybacks on their investment with ourselves sothe Beer Miser certainly fit the bill here payingfor itself in just 4 Month’s.! Barnby Dunn SocialClub are now saving £652 per Monthand are on a third weekly clean saving bothprecious time and money. Yet another happy Club customer who can nowinvest their saving’s into other areas of the Club.
John Thorne a Stock Auditor from Thorne Son & Clarke who we now workclosely with have been in business in some shape or another for nearly 100years. Over the years John has covered all areas of stock auditing withclients such as Hilton Hotels, the Oval, Edgbaston and Lords Cricket Grounds, together with Major Pub Chains and CIU Club’s. John states,
‘I feel that experience and advice are key to providing a good service andhelping clubs to control their business and become more profitable and Ifully recommend Smart Energy’s Beer Miser System for dramatically reducinga Club’s wastage. As I am the Stock Auditor for Bournville I could see justhow much they were wasting, the system has delivered incredible saving’sof which I am now urging other Club’s to look into with Smart Energy.’
We have proven with so many Club’s that by just making simple changes toyour Beer Lines or your Cellar Cooler we can save you thousands of poundsfor a minimal outlay. Our case studies and testimonials speak for themselves.
Why waste money on your electric by having to cool your beer all yearround when you don’t have too.? Why chuck the Club’s hard earn’t moneydown your drain with each working day.? Why do you continue to heat allyour Club room areas for just a few room wasting thousands on gas eachyear.?
Club Committee’s need to become proactive and start looking at energyoverhead spends to build strong foundations to profit better and thinksmarter. Please contact Amy on 0800 0730041 for your FREE EnergyManagement Survey and join other Club’s in the fight to drive down highspends today.
ARE YOU WASTING THOUSANDS OF POUNDSEACH YEAR WHEN SELLING YOUR BEER…???IT’S TIME TO THINK SMARTER LIKE THESE C.I.U CLUBS HAVE WHO ARENOW POCKETING A HUGE £600- £800 PER MONTH ON THEIR BEERLINE CLEANING.!

The 12-strong Committee, whichwas appointed on May 25, 2016,includes Lord Smith of Hindhead CBE,the Chairman of the Committee ofRegistered Clubs Associations(CORCA) who is also the ChiefExecutive of the Association ofConservative Clubs (ACC).
The Committee has beenappointed with a reporting deadlineof March 31, 2017.
Club Management coursepilot taking place in July The Education Working Groupcontinues to develop a newqualification in Club Managementthat should be rolled out before theend of the year.
Workbook and Module 1 covers‘Law & Regulations’, with Workbookand Module 2 looking at‘Management, Finance &Administration’.
Following an initial training pilotscheme held in Wirral in February, asecond pilot is taking place inCoventry this month.
Q: How did you become involved with clubsand the CIU? I first experienced club life when, in 1965, Ijoined my parent club, the South HyltonWMC on the outskirts of Sunderland, ofwhich I am now a life member. The Secretaryat that time was Mr Jimmy Spencer. Shortlyafter that I was introduced to the PennywellComrades WMC by my father who was one ofthe founder members of the club.
In January 1977 I was made a member ofthe Billingham Trade Union Social Club onTeesside. In 1979 I was elected to the clubcommittee; in 1991 I was elected as Chairmanand in 1994 I was then elected to Secretary ofthe club, the position I hold to this day.
I was elected to the Durham Branch in 2003and was Divisional Representative for the ‘No.6 Division’ with a total of 23 clubs at that time.
After the upheaval within the DurhamBranch in 2012/13, which somewhatfragmented the Branch in many ways, I waselected to the position of Branch Secretary onApril 25, 2014.
I, along with the backing of the BranchExecutive, the Branch Staff, Amy McKennaand Leesa Bradley, and the National Executive, have worked hard to keep our clubs together, and to prove to them that we are here to helpthem in any way we can: keeping them up todate with all old and new legislation, theeveryday running of our clubs and to helpthem with their domestic problems.
This has proved to be highly successful andthe clubs who found themselves caught up inthe upheaval of 2012/13 and drifting awayfrom the Durham Branch have realised that weare there to help them, and they are showingconfidence back in the Branch.
We have returned to the happy family wewere in previous years, or as one clubmancommented: “It has been like the rising of thephoenix.”
We now find that we have an extra 10 clubsin the Branch due to the sad closure of theCleveland Branch and they have beenwelcomed to the Branch and are nowparticipating in the Branch Divisions andspecial meetings.
Unfortunately over the years we havewitnessed the characters of our clubs whittledaway, those members who could sit and tellour younger members tales of years gone by.Unfortunately we are not recruiting enough of
the younger element of our communities toreplace these characters.
It would be good to see more of these youngpeople take more interest in our clubs andrestore the enthusiasm so that in the futurethey too can pass on the stories of whathappened in their younger days. We need theseyoung people to help run our clubs and keepthem thriving for another 150 years and more.
Q: How are Durham clubs generally faring atthe moment? The Durham clubs are holding their own.Midweek we are finding it a little slack with theclose season on the football not helping.
Q: If David Cameron offered you threewishes on behalf of clubs, what would theybe?I would wish that the Prime Minister couldinfluence our local councils to sing from thesame hymn sheet. It seems that sometimesthere are not two of them working from thesame legislation.
My second wish would be for the PrimeMinister and his colleagues to listen to ourdilemma and introduce legislation to allow usto compete with supermarket pricing.
My third wish would be to allow our clubsto reintroduce a separate smoking room; thesmoking ban has been the downfall of ourclubs within the CIU and other societies.
Q: Are there any particular areas of modernlife which you see as having a knock-on effectto clubs? The largest knock-on effect to our clubs is thenear disappearance of young people. When Iwas 18 years old one of your birthday presentsoff your father was a Club Membership Card;now it seems the interest is diminishing.
Q: What is your key aspiration for clubs inthe year ahead? I must reiterate the point of our young

members in the community. I would like toencourage them to visit our clubs to realise whatthey are missing out on.
Q: What do you say to the doom-mongers outthere? The doom-mongers are among the public thatdon’t want to sample club life. I would like to sayto them, come and try it, then comment – give ita chance.
Q: What are the most positive signs you’ve seen in the club sector in the past three years? The obvious signs over the last three years arethe improvement of the television companies’deals which have been introduced to our clubs. Also the breweries have realised that we shouldbe working together, and they have introducedmore help and greatly improved deals.
Q: If you could award an OCE (Order of theClub Empire ) who would it be to and why?My OCE Award would go to Mr Kevin Smyth, the former General Secretary of the Union, whose Union life was cut short by illness. We still see Kevin at our conference weekends andhe still gives us valuable help when needed. The gentleman inspires us all – here’s wishingyou a complete recovery Kevin, and thank you!
Q: Who has been the biggest influence in yourclub life? The biggest influence in my club life has been, apart from the aforementioned gentleman, MrJack Amos, or, ‘The Jack of Clubs’ as he wasknown in the North East, for the running of thecharity of the same name for countless years.Jack was a former Durham Branch Secretaryand also a member of the NEC. Jack wasawarded the MBE in the Queens Honours List.

Given the advances in technology, theday when highly advanced ‘driverlesscars’ become commonplace on ourroads is coming close. With 95 percent of all vehicle accidents havingbeen the result of a human error, itmakes sense to look at how newtechnology can not only improve ourdriving skills but may also help to savelives and possibly prevent someaccidents before they occur.
Industry and governments are bothbecoming increasingly aware of thebenefits of driverless technologies. TheGovernments pledge in this yearsQueen’s speech was to ensure insurancewould be made readily available to thepotential owners and users of driverlesscars, making this an encouraging sign ofthe changes forecasted.
An expert has estimated thatdriverless vehicle technology could beworth as much as £51 billion a year tothe UK due to fewer accidents, improved
productivity and increased trade.Companies such as Google, Ford and
Uber are all championing the driverlesscar technology. However, governmentsand industry must work together notonly to better educate and inform thepublic about driverless car technologybut to make sure they are developingand producing the products peoplewould want to purchase.
According to a survey by theInstitution of Mechanical Engineers,55 per cent of the 200 peoplesurveyed said they were unlikely towant to be a passenger of a driverlesscar, with 40 per cent saying they werevery unlikely to want to be apassenger. Only 21 per cent of thepeople surveyed said they would behappy to ride in a driverless vehicle.
As the UK hopes to become a worldleader of the driverless vehicletechnology, projects such as the £8million GATEway Research program byGreenwich Automated TransportAuthority will help to overcome thetechnical, legal and societal challengesof implementing driverless vehicles.
